Bioshock

220

u/ResidentCommand9865 12h ago

Yeah, that's agreeable. First ones story was awesome, second one allowing weapons and plasmids fucking rocked.

Third one is a bit of both worlds, the story is interesting, though a tad confusing, the Gameplay has some pretty great moments, but also feels a lot more rushed pace and not as claustrophobic as the setting in Rapture.

Either way, would still love a Bioshock 4. One was confirmed to being worked on back in 2019, but who knows.

Judas is the upcoming game with the same lead

The dlc on the third made the story Amaing it literally blew my brain

I'm a huge bioshock fan and didn't even realize there was a dlc. Appreciate the heads up after near 20 years of obliviousness.

Wait, it’s been almost 20 years? Come to think of it, I do remember reading the gaming magazine (remember those?) feature on bioshock when I was… in high school. Damn, I’m getting old

Find myself coming back to shadow of war, always enjoy the the combat and doing stupid shit with my captains

24

u/K4m30 7h ago

I can play Shadow of War but I can't finish it I just end up doing my own thing and then dropping the story.

5

u/SirRubet 4h ago

I thought the story was kind of fun, especially the character progression. But 90% of my time was spent doing something else

I’m gonna keep it a buck, I’ve spent more hours on both of those combined than most video games I’ve ever played and I never once even bothered to focus on the story lmao

10

Star wars Knights of the old republic. Revan's story in the first one is amazing but there was some much-needed gameplay overhauls in the second one.

42

u/AstronomerDramatic36 10h ago

I think there's a ton of examples, but this was the one that came to mind.

I'd say I preferred the first one, but I definitely replayed the second one more because of the gameplay

3

u/KGeddon 6h ago

Would it interest you to find out that people agreed with that so much they made a way to play the first game in the second games engine?

11

u/vetheros37 10h ago

This is the argument I always make when people compare the two. KOTOR II felt slightly disjointed with the story, but KOTOR was so great. People remember the first time when the twist was revealed, or figured it out for themselves over twenty years later, but the same can't really be said for KOTOR II. Now as for boss fights when your options are blowing up bacta tanks versus your Sith mentor with three lightsabers, I'm taking triple sabers.

3

u/SauliCity 3h ago

I'd say it's the opposite. 2's story was imo way better, with more (bu smaller) mysteries, better villains, and an actually meaningful dark path. But oh boy the game is broken without mods.

9

u/autist4269 9h ago

Kotor 2 had a better story imo. I love both of course though.

So just learned about these games a few months ago and I’m almost finished with Yotei. Definitely in the top 5 favorite games I’ve ever played. Any recommendations for similar games for the next challenge?

7

u/11swoosh 8h ago

Sifu has similar elements but the game itself is a bit different.

Nioh too but nioh got repetitive for me.

Sekiro I think is the closest to GoT, GoY albeit much more challenging.

Metal gear rising is also a good shout, it has parry as well

3

u/IanLooklup 6h ago

GoY is harder than Sekiro? Didn't play it but I would be pretty surprised since Sekiro is so notorious for its difficulty

5

u/Obvious-Border-7716 5h ago

I think they meant that Sekiro is akin to GoT and GoY but is much harder than those two games

Yet she hates the second season of the show.

So yeah, this is a good answer.

45

The second season of the show was a massive disservice to the second game.

Couldn't agree more. And I know i will get flack for this, but I found the sequel an absolute slog to finish and detested it by the end. I get the world is a horrible and violent place full of shitty and desperate people - the first one captured that perfectly. But the second went all in on constant violence to the extent where i just felt nothing for anyone or anything in it by the end and wanted them both to fucking die. Maybe that was the point but it wasn't just the story that made me feel that it was the constant fucking grind of rinse and repeat pointless violence that held no meaning/jeopardy anymore.

And don't get me started on the last chapter. Wait - you want me to skulk about looking for scraps while moving through houses and taking out horrible dudes again after doing it for like 30 hours. Great.

Horizon

29

u/khorenF 9h ago edited 6h ago

Came here to say that, the story of the first one was so good, specially the building sense of discovering what happened to humanity in the past. The second one has crazy beautiful world (the submerged casino is gorgeous) and much better gameplay but the story…I mean it’s serviceable but nothing compared to Horizon 1

12

u/stinky-bungus 9h ago

Horizon 2 gameplay is better in every way except that there are way more enemies that dig underground, I hate those guys.

17

u/dalsiandon 11h ago

This would be my take. I enjoy both and agree with the reasoning here. I also think Mass Effect could be here too

8

u/adiiriot 4h ago

This 100%. It's unfortunate that HFW has the misfortune of being the middle game of a hopefully eventually completed trilogy, but the gameplay was absolutely such a step up over HZD.

11

u/Jazzlike-Lunch5390 12h ago

Second one isn't as good.

29

u/Sad-Horse1598 11h ago

Seconds ones combat and traversal is leagues better, story is nowhere near as good as the first game though

6

u/ChaosDoggo 11h ago

I just wish getting parts could be a bit easier. I stopped cause I had to upgrade my stuff for the final fight and the upgrading was such a drag.

They knocked it out of the park with that franchise. The story actually had moments were I thought 'You know, the bad guys are talking a lot of sense here'. The idea that your choices in game one would have consequences to the story in games 2 and 3 was just mind blowing to me.

4

11

u/jankkhvej 10h ago

I love both games,
the first was already perfect but Arkane managed to come up with really cool new gameplay ideas for the second one,
the only downgrade imo is the movement being less smooth/ glitching out more often.
On the story side I don’t really like how they retroactively made the no kills ending of the first game’s DLC seem like the wrong choice because then the villain comes back, but I assume they just wanted to build on the character.

Borderlands 2 & 3

24

u/True-Reward-483 10h ago

May be a little controversial, but I would also say borderlands 2 and the pre-sequel.

I absolutely love the low gravity and Lazer weapons. Then again, the story is also awesome.

8

u/Content_Career1643 6h ago

BLASPHEMY.

On a more serious note. Borderlands 2 and the PS are realistically 2 sides of the same coin. They work perfectly together. They both have amazing stories, they both have practically the same gameplay, with a few gimmick differences that are mostly tuned to their respective environments.

Borderlands 2 is the pinnacle of the franchise though. Nothing would ever top that game. The PS is the only one that got close.

Batman Arkham City.

40

u/OttovonBismarck1862 12h ago

I don’t know, man. Feels like the jury’s still out on AC. Admittedly, it could just be the nostalgia goggles but I remember the story being fairly well-received at the time and anticipation for the sequel was astronomically high.

16

u/DatDominican 11h ago

You might be confusing Arkham city and Arkham knight .

Arkham city was universally well received and I don’t know anyone that prefers asylum over city

Wait I misunderstood . I think you’re arguing city has a better story

Which I wouldn’t say is wrong . I enjoyed it more but the story feels more cohesive in asylum

Arkham City has the best story in all of the Arkham games what are you talkin about

8

u/LambCo64 12h ago

I'm of the opinion that as a narrative piece the first one works better as a cohesive experience. And Im not saying the Arkham City Story is bad, it's great, but The open world Nature of Arkham City makes the story a little disjointed by comparison. Is has vastly superior gameplay in almost every conceivable way though. Just my two cents.
