I love the story of Diablo 2 - I feel like it was 3 where it really fell off in that respect. Actually, in gameplay respect as well I guess. Diablo 2 was the best of both worlds imo.

The dark wanderer story is superior I think. Most of Diablo 1's story is told through the environment, the randomly assinged quests, and going back to talk and talking to NPCs which give cryptic story bits. Some people prefer that, I suppose.

Diablo 1's atmosphere is top tier for sure.

Diablo 3's story felt like a saturday morning cartoon where they would tell you EVERYTHING! was not a fan.
