I’m curious how much driving time this saves overall. If you assume a driver would have a green light 50% of the time, how does the extra distance/detour compare to the time saved by not having to stop at a red light? Has anyone done the math on this?

In the novella "A Short Stay in Hell" by Steven L. Peck a man is sentenced to Hell.

His Hell is a library that contains every book that it is possible to write (within constraints detailed below). To be freed from hell he must find the book that perfectly details his life story with no mistakes (e.g. grammatically correct, factually correct).

Each book is exactly 410 pages, 40 lines per page, 80 characters per line, and each character has 95 options (the English keyboard character set). Every possible permutation satisfying these constraints exists. Most such books are, of course, gibberish, just a random string of characters.

I'm happy to accept many assumptions. For instance, maybe the best attempt is to obtain the average character length of a sentence, then the average amount of sentences per book, then the probability that a particular sentence will be grammatically correct. I'm not sure what kind of assumptions would be needed to approximate the probability that a particular sentence is factually correct.

In the novella the library is separated into blocks, that is the books aren't stacked end to end, so the library isn't perfectly space efficient. That said, for the purposes of approximations, I think it's good enough to assume that the books are stacked end to end.

I took physics and calc, but I just dont want to do the math. So, I request someone else do it for me to marvel at. If I made assumptions, it would look like, "assume there isn't air, and the diver is a particle in free fall. And they are are moving at a constant speed with neither accelerating." And that just feels like a lie. One of you fucking geniuses probably has a better understanding. I get that she is moving too, but I really sucked at vectors and solving for all the weird motion. So, does the boat need to be accelerating post jump for her to fuck it up? Bonus points if you draw me a fucking schematic with some vectors to help me get me my head around it.

Would it be possible for a person of average strength to push over or snap a 6ft tall scale skyscraper built with real materials and foundation?

Can the avarage expected time of collision for n balls be calculated, and what would it be for 2 balls as an example?

We have an outdoor plant in our front yard. When it hasn’t rained for a few days, my wife will ask me to water it.

She asks me to put two full watering cans in it (that’s 20 litres total). The pot is 30cm in diameter at the top and tapers down.

Average annual rainfall in my area is 1315mm. How many days worth of rain does my wife want me to subject this poor thing to in its sudden and unnecessary monsoon season?

(I actually use about 5 litres but I think that’s already way too much)

So volume is the red and green thing in the horizontal axis, so my question is how do you interpret that? because the way i would see it is that volume should be alligned vertically with time so it would be like "on august 3 the volume was like that"

As more balls are included how does the probability of a collision change? It gets more likely clearly, but how would you express this mathematically?

In this show they throw three sails up to move the ship enough to turn the shafts and create electricity and move the ship.

Just curious based on the size and number of plates, barbell size - how much total weight is he carrying? My guess is 10kg (barbell) + 20kg on each side. Total 50kg.

Assume this includes paper already printed and that every tree on earth's sole purpose is now to be converted into paper. Also assume that the font is standard 12pt Times New Roman with no spacing, paper size is 8.5" x 11", and only includes sites that are publicly accessible. Basically every site indexed by Google.

So I'm trying to figure out how many cats could fit into my 15 × 15 × 9 room, and already determined it would be about ~12,000 cats. But my next question is- would the bottom cats squish, or would it be more like being 9 feet deep in water considering the density of a cat is similar to water?

In a recent post (https://www.reddit.com/r/theydidthemath/comments/1w5px3g/comment/p7kcx12), most of the top-voted answers imply that "the order of the births does not matter"...but then provide explanations and examples that imply that "the order of the births DO matter".

The top-voted reply links to this SciAm article (https://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/guest-blog/a-fun-diy-science-goodie-proof-yourself-against-sensationalized-stats/) which poses the question as: “I tell you that I have two children, and that (at least) one of them is a boy born on Tuesday. What probability should you assign to the event that I have two boys?”

In this phrasing (and the phrasing in the linked post above), the order of the births does NOT matter. If the order does NOT matter, then there should be 3 distinct possibilities:

1. That 2 boys are born
2. That 2 girls are born (this possibility will later be eliminated, but for now, it is a possibility)
3. That *one of each* is born

Later, there are other factors that eliminate some of the possibilities. Like "at least 1 is a boy" eliminates the "2 girls are born" possibility.

But, until these other factors are introduced, there are 3 distinct possibilities. Each with a 33% probability.

I correct or missing something?
