Question Skyrim looks horrendous on steam machine.

How do I get Skyrim Special Edition to run properly on a Steam Machine?

The game runs at a very low resolution and it's only 4:3. There's no in game video settings and setting the resolution in Steam does absolutely nothing.

EDIT: Thankyou to everyone who replied. Fixed now. In the launch options I typed

SteamDeck=0 %command%

Now the launcher works and the game is running in 1440P Ultra

Question wifi problem on windows

Does anyone here have Windows running on a Steam Machine and experience Wi-Fi randomly disconnecting?

Whenever I start a game, after 2–3 minutes my Wi-Fi connection drops. At first, Windows says ā€œNo Wi-Fi networks foundā€ (while Wi-Fi works perfectly fine on another PC at the same time). After a while, it changes to ā€œWi-Fi not availableā€ altogether.

The only things that fix it are restarting the PC or restarting the Wi-Fi module.

Has anyone experienced something similar or found a fix?

Discussion Thanks Gabe, I now have an expensive Bloodborne machine

For reference, I've had the Gabecube for about a week, and before that my setup was my ps5 and a decent midrange pc... for 2017. Pc could handle older games I like and some things you can't get on console, ps5 for newer games I know won't run on my pc. Now that I've got my Gabecube, I don't need my ps5, since performance is practically the same while being more in my control. Every game I'm interested in no longer needs to be tied to a machine that is made by a company that just seems to care about gamers less every day... except Bloodborne.

So, thanks Gabe, the only reason I haven't sold my ps5 for probably more than I bought it for at launch is a game Sony won't do jack with, and congratulations Sony, the only business you're getting from me will involve Valve taking a cut. Loyal Sony fanboy since playing Spyro the dragon back on the ps1.

Daily Counter Sound off, folks -- it's Day 68!

Good morning, friends! Happy Day 68! Thank god it's Friday -- work has been absolutely brutal... I really, really just want to spend this weekend relaxing/spending time with my cat. It's been a brutally hard past two weeks with work. I've been very low energy, and combining that with some of the surgery fatigue/lack of nutrients isn't a great combo. Anyway, sorry -- as much as I have hope for me in my personal life, I share that hope with you all in getting your Steam Machines! Are you doing anything fun while you wait? Please do, as it'll be here before you know it! Best of luck today, friends!

Do you guys think the steam machine will be around as powerful as my grandsons Nintendo Wii U? I hear it can play indie games like Tetris and minesweeper but I want Jimmy to enjoy more recent releases like mortal kombat legacy collection

Now that I've emptied my Steam wallet, you can all rest assured that the Steam Frame will be released any day now!

Question MicroSD Card Issues

• Upvotes

Okay so I have only seen a single post about this specific issue and it didn't really fix the issue I am having although searching for the solution did reveal that people seem to talk about SD cards but don't actually mean SD Cards (Micro SSD anyone)!

I just had the Steam Machine delivered yesterday (2TB and controller - UK) and setting it up was just fine. I already have a Steam Deck LCD which I have had for a few years now and I was hoping that I could just swap the MicroSD card from the Deck to the Machine to just keep things easy until I decide what I want to install on the Machine's SSD.

I took the card out of the Deck and the Machine just doesn't recognise it. When booting into desktop mode it mostly doesn't recognise it either although sometimes updating the partition tool it will hang on 33%. If you leave it in the Machine on a reboot, it can cause it to take ages to actually boot.

Now it could be an issue with the card but I can use it in the Deck just fine and I have been using it for ages now without issue. I have reformatted the card in the Deck in Desktop mode as well game mode and the Machine still doesn't want to know. Does anyone else have this issue and have you overcome it?

The card is a Amazon Basics 1TB A2 V30 etc in case that matters. I do have other smaller cards but I haven't had chance to see if they work yet (because apparently I need to work!) but I wanted to post to the hive mind in the first instance!

Off topic - the new controller feels so much better than the original Steam Controllers I have and that packaging is S tier!

Question Xbox FSE on Steam Machine?

I’m considering putting windows on an external SSD for the steam machine, to use some games I own through Xbox or use gamepass without streaming.

Has anyone tried the Full Screen Experience designed for the Xbox Ally on the steam machine? I see some have dual booted it on steam deck but haven’t seen anyone use it on the machine.

Question Grain and shimmering on SM - Linux Gaming

So my question is if it's normal that gaming on SM and overall linux gaming have much more noise in picture quality like grain and shimmering?

I am comparing The Blood of Dawnwalker on SM and PS5 and I can see much more of this on SM but then I also have PC and I can see exactly same issue in Crimson Desert but on other hand games like The outer worlds don't have it. Is it because The blood of Dawnwalker and Crimson Dessert are newer and not nicely optimised? All this on Proton 11.

I am lost and not sure what to do I really want to keep SM but boy I can see that grain in every shadow and movement.

News Call of duty finally works on steam machine (multiplayer)

Holy moly!! Call of duty Cold War now works for multiplayer on the steam machine!! On proton make sure you have it set to experimental and it works nothing else. 1440p / medium high settings no frame gen getting 100-120+fps

It’s on sale right now for 14.99$

Search and destroy lobbies take up to 3-5 minutes to find games, TDM 1-2 mins, nuketown 24/7 1 minute, zombies 1-3 minutes. Haven’t ran into any hackers or cheating lobbies.

Currently the only cod that works on Linux / Steam machine / OS

Only the cods prior to 2019 have access to hacking you and your data. This one is safe.

Question Would a Steam Machine be a good fit for a lifelong console gamer who wants to use mods?

Hey everyone!

I'm trying to figure out whether a Steam Machine would actually be a good fit for me, and I'd really appreciate some input from people who already use one.

I've been a console gamer pretty much my entire life. I started out with Nintendo consoles and have been mainly playing on PlayStation for the last few years. I've never really owned or used a gaming PC, so the whole PC/modding side of gaming is still pretty new to me.

The main reason I'm considering a Steam Machine is mods.

There are a few games I'd really like to play with mods, mainly:

Terraria

•Hollow Knight/Silksong

Stardew Valley

Cyberpunk 2077

For Cyberpunk in particular, I'm not looking for anything crazy. I don't need ultra graphics mods, huge overhauls, 4K texture packs, ray tracing, etc. I'm more interested in smaller quality-of-life mods, additional/custom cyberware, extra customization options, things like that.

There's also another thing I'm curious about: how well does SteamOS handle games that aren't actually downloaded through Steam?

For example, games like Undertale Yellow, where you download the game directly from a website rather than through Steam. Is it relatively easy to install and run these kinds of games on a Steam Machine, or does SteamOS make that more complicated? And does the same apply to browser-based games or other games that don't have a native Steam version?

My TV does support 4K/120Hz, but honestly, I don't really care about getting 4K or extremely high-end graphics. As long as the games run well and look good on a TV, I'm happy.

This is where I'm wondering if a Steam Machine might make more sense for me than buying a full gaming PC. I only have a relatively small number of games where I specifically want mods, and I'm not sure it would be worth spending significantly more money on a proper gaming PC just for that.

The other thing I'm wondering about is how modding actually works on SteamOS.

I know some games have Steam Workshop, which obviously makes things pretty easy. But for games where you have to download mods from external websites and use something like a mod manager/loader, how does that work on a Steam Machine?

For example, if I download a Cyberpunk mod from an external website, is installing and managing it on SteamOS relatively straightforward? Are there any major limitations compared to doing the same thing on Windows?

And for games like Terraria and Stardew Valley, how easy is it to use their usual mod loaders on SteamOS?

Basically, I'm looking for a console-like experience, but with the ability to mod the handful of games I'm interested in.

Would you say a Steam Machine is a good fit for someone in my situation, or would I be better off just getting a Windows gaming PC?

I'd especially appreciate input from people who also came from a primarily console-gaming background and made the switch to SteamOS.

Thanks!

512GB with Controller

Adding to the many posts that came before more and helped give me an idea of how long it might take. Was surprised it was relatively short at just over a months, despite joining the wait list so late.

Good luck to all those still waiting!

Seriously they need to fix this shit. VRR works wonderfully, but turning on HDR on my steam machine when it just works on my other consoles is annoying as hell.

Discussion 60 day review

I’ve had my SM since launch, here are my thoughts!

The unboxing/ packaging was awesome. It’s sitting in my closet and I refuse to throw it away.

The hardware is beautiful, and sturdy. The box itself is really well made and there are zero creaks and groans anywhere. The Controller is also so damn ergonomic and solid.

Unfortunately, I’ve had a very frustrating issue with the Controller since hour 1 of playing. About every 60 seconds I get a super loud squeak from the rumble pack. Valve said it’s a hardware issue and I have to RMA- super hesitant to do it as I wouldn’t have a controller to use for weeks. Very frustrating.

The SM software experience hasn’t been seamless. The CEC is beyond frustrating. My entertainment center is simple: 144hz gaming TV, Apple TV, and my SM. That’s it.

If I turn on the Apple TV from my Apple Remote, it boots the Steam Machine every time lol.

If I turn off the Apple TV, I then have to manually switch back to Steam Machine. Sleep/suspend doesn’t work properly and is still dropping frames like made when the game is resumed. I don’t think I’ve gotten sleep/suspend or CEC to work properly once.

Other than those issues, it’s everything I hoped for. It’s my only gaming system and for me- I am in love with it. I love how inexpensive the games are on the Steam store. I love the entire experience of PC gaming in the living room. Performance is amazing, but I mostly play Indies so keep that in mind.

I’ll check at the one year mark or so- but it still feels surreal to play it every day. I still remember when the trailer came out for all the Steam hardware and the excitement I felt. It hasn’t faded!
