I'm confused at to the different SteamOS versions that are currently in active development. 3.8 brought a lot of fixes for handheld devices. Now 3.9 seems to be getting lots of updates but are the fixes in 3.8 included there or are they two separate tracks? Do I need to keep track myself if there's features in one or the other that is feel is required for my setup?

I wanted to share some settings that I was able to tweak to optimise performance while using steam remote play on my custom SteamOS PC. I have been using sunshine/apollo with moonlight for years now but I wanted to test the improvements with remote play so I can utilize my steam controller and the overlay properly. This took a ton of trial and error and YMMV.
On the SteamOS host:
-Go to the Remote Play tab>allow direct connection>set to "All devices"
-enable advanced host options
-Prioritize network traffic> On
-hardware encoding>turn off (AMD doesn't handle the encoding as well so software does fine)
-video>fast
-Bandwidth Limit>choose between 40-50mb/s. this allows the other elements besides video to have proper buffer time and prevents weird latency issues. Very important and somewhat opposite from moonlight so be sure not to overlook this.
-Framerate Limit> Manually set instead of auto
-Resolution limit> Manually set instead of auto
-Hardware decoding> Off
-HEVC video> On
-Low Latency Networking> On
-Under the "Settings" main tab, enable Developer mode
-Under "Developer" tab, disable Wifi Power Management to prevent wifi related studdering
-Press the (...) button to bring up the overlay menu
-Disable frame limit here and let the games limit the frame limit without using vsync
-Allow Tearing> On
-Enable VRR and HDR> On if your hardware supports it
On the SteamOS Client:
-Go to the Remote Play tab
-Connection Options>Allow Direct Connection>change from "Auto" to "All Devices"
-Turn on Advance Client Options
-Video> Fast
-Bandwidth Limit> 40-50Mb/s for the same reasons above
-Framerate Limit> Manually set
-Resolution Limit> Manually set
-Hardware Decoding> Off
-HEVC Video> On
-Low Latency Networking> On
-Navigate to the "Settings" tab and enable Developer Mode
-Under "Developer" tab, disable Wifi Power Management
If your client is using the Steam Link App:
-Go to Streaming>Customise
-Video> Fast
-Bandwidth Limit> 40-50Mb/s
-Framerate Limit> Manually set
-Resolution Limit> Manually set
-HEVC> Enable
-Audio Buffer Size> Change from "Auto" to 40ms. This is also super important to prevent latency issues, so don't skip this step.
-Allow Direct Connection> Change from auto "All Devices"
Hopefully this provides a foundation of the settings for people interested in trying steam remote play with the newly added improvements. From here, you can try optimizing further depending on your own hardware configurations.

Looking for some advice,
SteamOS was working fine on my desktop for months, and just over the last few weeks my ethernet seems to be extremely spotty during the day. Goes down for hours.
I have:
reinstalled drivers
given desktop priority + reserved its IP
tried different ethernet cables
tried different ports on the switch
attempted a large swath of terminal command (thought mostly from copilot so might be garbage) for bringing the network online/reinstalling drivers/forcing connection etc
I have a wifi card which is getting me by when its offline but wifi is much slower than ethernet ofcourse.
Im at the point where everything leads to the realtek drivers my motherboard uses being incompatible and a problem, and no matter what work arounds I try I seem to just get stuck.
The most frustrating part is it does eventually just come back online in the evenings or weekends (thought it was my work pc when working from home causing DHCP issues but thats ruled out too)
Motherboard is a Asus Prime B840M-A Wifi and Im pretty sure my next step is just buy a new mobo
Any help is appreciated.

Hey all,
I built a steam machine from microcenter bundles. Many parts have rgb in them. - Fans, cooler, case, ram sticks.
I have been using openrgb to control the lights to a solid color. When I turn on/wake from sleep openrgb does not keep the profile and it's back to rainbows until manually go to desktop mode and select load profile again.
So I just downloaded decky loader and huesync, and it actually shows up in the decky loader menu, but nothing changes when I am changing settings.
My end goal is to just have the lights be a solid color when I wake and not have to manually fix it everytime.
Any advice?

Before you come after me I’m a student going back to college and was looking for deals online for laptops because my old one (6 years) can’t even play most online games and found this online for 600 euro.
I had no idea a Chromebook was a separate thing from laptops and no I did not know it’s just a glorified iPad with a keyboard built in that freezes its screen when a plus in anything in a port other that a charger such as a wired mouse and a USB but the only way I’ve found I can access it is via remote link but I can’t switch it over fully from the old laptop. I’ve looked online for some process but it’s either not the right model of its advice from Covid.i mainly bought it for college but I was hoping to be able to play online with friends, something I haven’t been able to since my laptop just dosent work for a few years due to wither graphics, ram or just bullshit.
I’m not a huge computer person either so I can’t do super complex stuff to fit it either.Be honest because I’m thinking of taking it back
Here is the model and make:

Ever since booting up my ROG Ally X on the previous SteamOS version nothing works in desktop mode anymore. Inside of the settings app it said no controller found and even with the Steam app running it won’t work. I just updated to the most current stable branch and now even the entire option to configure a controller for desktop functions is gone from systems settings AS WELL AS inside of the Steam application.
This means that besides only using gaming mode, my system is bricked as I cannot do anything besides touching the screen there.
Have you guys any tips on what to do? I restarted and did everything bar reimaging the system.
Please I am at my wits end here and honestly kinda frustrated.
I am sure that I could try to reimage Steam OS and wipe the system by after installing terabytes of mods and customizations it would be easier for me to just discard the whole ROG Ally X and give up. I had to do just that when windows BSOD on me and I not even the reimage from ASUS would make me boot into windows anymore which is why I tried to salvage the system by installing SteamOS which worked for a year now without a hitch.

Hi everyone!
After months of work and community testing Playhub 1.3.0 is finally here, together with Playhub Artworks 1.0.0, TrailerHero 1.5.0, Playhub Notifications 1.3.0 and Now Playing 2.5.0.
If you still don't know what Playhub is, it brings the SteamOS and Decky experience straight to Windows. It gives you a dedicated Gaming Mode on PC, complete with game importing from Xbox, Epic, and GOG, deep Steam customization, and access to tons of plugins from Playhub, the Decky Store, and GitHub. Basically, it's built to give you the ultimate console-like Steam setup on Windows.
This release opens the Plugin Store to Decky Store plugins and independent GitHub projects, gives Playhub a new look, and brings a complete artwork editor to Big Picture. There is also a new way to choose and download your trailers, themed volume indicators, and improvements to Spotify and YouTube Music.
All the plugins of the web have now a new home: Playhub

The Playhub Plugin Store now brings together Playhub plugins, Decky Store plugins and the known independent projects from GitHub. You can browse, install, update and remove them from the same app, with a badge showing where each plugin comes from.

The new home has a rotating showcase and categories with a fresh selection at each launch. Open a category to see everything in it, or go straight to All Plugins and narrow the collection by source, name or date.

Each plugin has its own page with screenshots, videos, the original description and available release notes. You can switch between a compact list and a grid, and Playhub remembers your choice separately for each category, All Plugins and Manage. Search and filters in Manage apply to the plugins you have installed.

A note about compatibility:
Decky Store plugins and independent GitHub projects are not guaranteed to work on Windows. Their pages in the Plugin Store make this clear and point you to the original developer for support. Just try them first, but don't expect every single plugin will work.

Playhub's mascots now accompany you through setup and the app's main pages. The welcome includes 5 new accent color and a choice of Mica, Acrylic or a solid background, so you can choose the entire look before getting started.

When a new Playhub version is available, a dedicated window shows its release notes and an Update now button, with download progress underneath. So no more downloads from the Github release page! You can also check and update DeckyLoader directly from its page.

Gaming Mode now adds optional navigation vibration with adjustable intensity. Dashboard also prepares its active-window view earlier when you open it.

Playhub Artworks lets you find and customize your Steam library's artwork without leaving Big Picture or putting down the controller.

Search SteamGridDB, PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox, IGDB, AlphaCoders, iiDB and IGN for covers, banners, backgrounds, logos and icons. Preview the results, check their dimensions and apply the one you like.

There is more than downloading pictures:

Your preferred sources, filters and artwork layout are remembered, and background downloads show their progress while you continue browsing.

TrailerHero now has a full-screen per-game trailer page built for the controller. Choose a streamed trailer, save one for offline playback or import a video from your PC.

YouTube results show the thumbnail, title, channel and duration, with a preview before you commit. Saved trailers can be replaced or removed from the same page. For a larger library, bulk downloads let you choose 720p, 1080p or 2160p and follow the progress.

You can also switch between ThemeDeck music and trailer audio with the controller's west face button: X on Xbox, Square on PlayStation. The button prompt follows your controller layout.

The volume indicator in Gaming Mode now matches your notification theme. Xbox Console, PlayStation, GOG Galaxy, Epic Games Launcher, Nintendo, Android and Playhub each have their own design.
It appears when the Windows desktop is not running; on the desktop, Windows keeps its own indicator. There is a separate toggle if you want the notifications without the volume overlay, and it never takes input or focus away from your game.
Friend notifications also find Steam names and avatars more reliably, reusing previously loaded images so familiar faces appear sooner.
Playhub Notifications 1.3.0
Playhub Notifications repository
Spotify and YouTube Music now keep more of their previously loaded content ready between sessions. Home and Library reopen sooner, and large collections load progressively while Play All and Shuffle still use the full library.
Spotify also recovers when the audio output changes or becomes unavailable. This addresses silent starts where the track looked like it was playing but no sound reached the speakers. Old library results no longer return after refreshing, disconnecting or changing accounts.

"Wait, what is Playhub?" 😮
Playhub consolize your Windows gaming experience with features like Steam-first startup, easy Decky plugins install, game imports and Big Picture polish. More info in the project repository here to find all the details.
"I like that, but how does it work?" 🤓
To easily understand how Playhub works and how to install it, I recommend you to take a look at my Overview + Tutorial video
"Oh no, I hate AI..."
This project is personal, completely free and open source. You don't like it? Don't download it. It's an app, not a medical prescription.
"But why aren't the Playhub plugins available on the Decky Store?" 😱
They are built using human hands and AI tools. Decky management doesn't allow to developers who use AI to be on their store. Playhub respects this decision, that's why Playhub Plugin Store exists.
If you want to support the project, even a small tip would mean a lot.

I have been playing Kingdom Hearts on Steam OS. Regardless of the Proton settings and the game frame rate and refresh rate settings, the game often crashes after pausing to save or doing anything and pausing. After running some commands, I found out that it's not simply a game crash, but at GPU driver issue. The GPU is running on stock settings, so it's not anything about that.
After doing some research, I found out that the game was known to have some issues with RDNA3 GPUs; is that still the case? Is there any fix?
Thank you for your time.

Somehow I recently had an issue with the controller not acting like it should with powering my PC on and off (with steamOs). I typically use the controller's power button but it can use the main menu and lowest tab of steamos in game mode too). I set this up a month or 2 ago and it was working fine. I switched TVs and then it stopped working suddenly, and just the day before it was fine in its functionality with the original t.v.
So I wanted to point out that this update solved this issue for me. If you were having some issues surrounding that feature of the controller, it may solve that for you too. Just wanted to give a heads up. Update that puck and controller!

I can only get it fullscreen on native resolution on desktop but I want to display as 1280x800 but it does this?

Is there any way to run Gamescope at a non native resolution? I know I can set games to run at a certain resolution but can I get actual gamescope to boot into running a custom resolution?

Hey all,
I have SteamOS installed in place of Windows on my ROG Xbox Ally X. It's been super solid. However, I just updated from 3.8.1 to 3.8.16 and now my thumbsticks no longer work for controlling the mouse cursor on desktop mode. It's now essentially just touchscreen that works. Anyone else encountered this and have a fix?
How easy is it to roll back to my previous version of SteamOS? All the guides online are about the Steam Deck.
Cheers in advance!
EDIT: There is a simple fix for this as offered by u/snoopets1826 in the comments below: "Go into steam on desktop mode, go to controller, click on advanced controls, load the default controls for desktop mode and you'll be good to go again."

I have an Xbox ally x been trying to set the mouse controls in desktop without having to hold the Xbox button every time. My question is there a plugin or a software I can use because i try layouts but there is none for mouse controls for the Xbox ally x just the steam deck.

i went to 30TDP cap and i noticed it started using my battery while plugged in becasue it said 99% with weird readings like 600hours - 1200 hours, and 0.5w when i had the over lay up BUT i was plugged in. white light was one EVEN THE PLUG ICON disappeared.
ALSO another glitch i had was now and then i see my rog go from 100-99% orange light turns on, after 5-8 mins it will go back to 100% which is normal! than it goes white. HOWEVER i noticed when it did this it kept going down 100,99,98,97,96 ETC.
So now im using 25w and it seems stable. Anyone else have this problem im on steam os.
i use this: https://rog.asus.com/au/docks-chargers-and-cables/chargers/rog-gaming-charger-dock/ even with the included cable that braided one 2m i dont think it has e-marker chip.
