For me it's The Commitments (1991). The musical-comedy-drama about an aspiring Irish soul band wasn't a big success in the US. My mom generally dislikes musicals as a genre so I'm not even sure why she grabbed it off the shelf of our local video store.

The listening tastes at home tended more towards Black Sabbath & Queen as well. Despite that it became a frequent rental though for us.

Watching it at the time, the humor was my biggest takeaway. As I grew up over the years I began to appreciate it as a whole. The film just has a ton of energy & heart. More importantly it just feels so real & authentic. Even if you aren't from the same background it's very easy to identify with the characters.

Came across some behind the scenes footage of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II training for By Any Means and it got me thinking about how noticeable this stuff actually is on screen. I always appreciate when an actor looks comfortable handling a weapon instead of clearly learning the movements five minutes before the camera rolls.

Do you actually notice this kind of training when watching a movie?

I just finished rewatching Leon: The Professional for the first time since I was a teen and the first time since the revelations about Luc Besson were made public.

Im genuinely baffled why I didnt see it back then. Even as a teen (I was probably 14 or 15), I feel like it should have been obvious there was something up with Luc.

Did anyone watch it before the Besson news and feel sick?

I get it. Objectively, the movie was really well done. The cinematography and acting in particular were masterful. The score was great. The movie is technically great. But I probably wont be able to watch that movie ever again.

Jean Reno seems like a good dude for intervening to protect Natalie Portman, though, and his decision to make his character child-like and oblivious made the movie so friggin good.

Anyone able to give their (civil) opinions on this movie? Do you think it still holds up? Will you ever watch it again? If you watched it before knowing about Besson, did you feel uncomfortable during the first watch?

There are so many wonderful and under appreciated Asian-American actors. Let's celebrate them here.

My favorites are (in no particular order):

Nobu McCarthy (Canadian but whatever, she needs to be mentioned) - Famous of course as Mr. Miyagi's first love in Karate Kid II but acted in so many things. I love her in The Geisha Boy with Jerry Lewis amongst others.

Pat Morita - Needs no introduction but a personal favorite of mine is Collision Course, a buddy cop movie, where he has an unlikely pairing with Jay Leno.

James Shigeta - Most famous as Mrs. McClane's boss in Die Hard but was wonderful as a leading man in The Crimson Kimono, Walk Like a Dragon, and Flower Drum Song. Could have been the Asian Sidney Poitier if fate had been kinder.

James Lew - Recently deceased and a loss I felt hard as he was one of my favorite B movie martial arts baddies with his roles in The Perfect Weapon, Red Sun Rising, and Balance of Power particular favorites.

Mako - Oscar nominated in The Sand Pebbles but made a wonderful sensei in so many martial arts movies later on in life.

Nancy Kwan - Beautiful and talented leading lady who never got the recognition she deserved.

Bolo Yeung - Another one who martial arts fans will easily recognize.

Julia Nickson - Probably best known for acting opposite Sly in Rambo II but great in so many other movies with her role in Double Dragon being my favorite.

John Lone - Supremely talented actor who somehow never got big for reasons I can't fathom.

Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa - Another one who passed away last year. Again supremely talented and a great villain. Best known for Mortal Kombat but I love him in so many different roles.

And then some beautiful 90s ladies who I had major crushes on as a teen:

Kelly Hu - Loved her on Martial Law and Nash Bridges

Ming-na Wen

Tamlyn Tomita

And last but certainly not least, one who has only three credits on imdb: Min Luong. She has a blink and you'll miss her role in Big Trouble in Little China but I love her in Gleaming the Cube opposite Christian Slater. And then she has another role in a TV movie that I finally found on YouTube and look forward to seeing her in.

Say what you will. The hotdog scene, cheese and crackers, the fake plant.

Whatever.

That part of the movie is fucking good. Like legitimately good.

When he looks up and people are just floating down and you see their clothes flapping in the wind. Ugh.

It's so disappointing the rest is so bad. I still love this movie so much. I don't get the hate. It's absolute trash and I love it.

Pretty sure he made the entire movie to revolve around the plot so he could make that scene.

I would like to ask people who remember Terminator 2 priemiere. Before it debuted in movie theaters, teasers and trailers did show that Arnold Schwarzenegger T-800 character will be playing a good guy right? It wasn’t a secret at all?

Some info said that teasers initially didn’t show that he will be good guy this time. I want to hear people who lived during those times.

Movies similar to The Bourne Identity?

I’m looking for movies highly similar to The Bourne Identity (from the Bourne Trilogy). I’m not just looking for another spy movie, I want something with a similar pace, espionage environment, good action, and an interesting story.

What I loved most about Bourne was how engaging it was from start to finish. The action felt realistic, the mystery was interesting, and the story itself was brilliant.

I tried Munich because someone recommended it as being similar, but I didn’t really get the same feeling. It felt quite different in terms of pacing and overall experience.
