Lets be honest here that car flipping was the best outcome here as they can no longer be a danger on the road until whatever the fuck is going on in there is handled.

Also, flipping at that speed isn't all that dangerous, as long as he doesn't dangle his arm out of the window.

And the chances that he'll continue driving this car are very slim.

He basically DIY confiscated the car.

i work with a guy who flipped his jeep over on its side off roading and he put his hands out to brace the crash because it was so slow and he lost 7 fingers.

I know a guy who did basically the same when the folding chair collapsed below him. Cut off his middle finger.

20 years or so later his son lost his thumb to a circular saw when building his sauna.

That guy's son is now fearing for his fingers.

I had either the laziest or smartest wood shop teacher. He wouldnā€™t demonstrate anything. Heā€™d just give directions and then call up a student and talk them through it. Had all 10 fingers too. Always explained that just because he could do it didnā€™t mean we could so it was better for us to learn while he explained the steps. I never figured out if that was his way of keeping everyone focused and involved or if it was bullshit so he didnā€™t have to have his hands near the machines in case one of us leaned too closely and bumped him.

People used to think you didnā€™t need to wear a seatbelt in a car because you could just grab the dash and keep yourself in your seat. Some people still think that. With enough velocity, a Kleenex box sitting on your dash or in the crevice by your back window can do some serious damage to your head. I think basic mechanical physics should be required in public school, rather than the Ten Commandments.

An underappreciated mechanic is also that your head is remarkably heavy and tends to try to pull your upper body ahead during slow falls. He might have felt, physically, like he was about to go through the window and be way worse off. It does feel that way in the kind of slow rollover that happens while offroading. Not that I'm speaking from experience... šŸ¤

Realistically, you'd probably try to brace yourself too. If you are falling, and you curl into a ball, then I can only imagine you've trained it for some silly sport.

Falling and extending your hand out to catch yourself is a reaction inherent in us all.

Back in the 2010's someone in church's son flipped his truck drunk driving through a farmers field that he hated. Was trying to ruin as much of their yield, I think alfalfa or something. Windows open, truck flips. Arm goes out, crushed under the roof when it hit the ground. Didn't shear it off but broke the hell out of it.

Since his dad's a cop he wasn't charged for the DUI or reckless driving or destruction of property. He was bragging about all the damage he'd done and his intent but the 'real' story is he had a terrible rollover accident all the way from the highway into the damn near middle of the field. No one bought it except the judge, I guess.

He died drunk driving a few years later. Speared a telephone pole at like 40mph. No seatbelt. DIdn't get many details there, had already moved towns for dads work.

I watched a guy try to stop a forklift from hitting an aircraft.

His arm popped open. The woman I was talking to yanked her belt off, made him a tourniquet with it, and saved the dudes arm. She was a real life hero, and her immediate action (quit talking to me mid-sentence to save this guy) was inspirational.

So, lucky she was there, but yeah. People do dumb things like try to use flesh to stop metal pretty often, if there isnt time to think.

I did something similar. A girl accidentally cut her wrist lengthwise on some glass and she starts running with blood going everywhere. I chased her down, pulled off my shirt and wrapped it tightly around the cut. Yelled for my friend to get his car and we took her to the hospital as fast as we could. ER dr said if I didn't do that she easily would have bled out. She had surgery to repair the vein and remove glass. I just reacted instead of staring like others were doing. Glad I was in the right place at the right time! Even saved someone drowning years before that. Adults sat there doing nothing and I dove in and pulled the young girl out. None of it really sunk in until later. Its a strange feeling! I never panic, just react and no idea where it comes from. Just thankful I can do that!

There's war stories from when cannons first came into use on battle fields of soldiers trying to instinctively stop cannon balls that had slowed down somewhat rolling across the battle field and getting all the bones in their legs shattered. Human brains are kind of bad at figuring out the force of slow moving, but very heavy objects.

If you've ever done anything reflexively and then realized this wasn't the appropriate situation for that reflex (I have), you should be terrified of that sort of accident (I am). Putting yourself in a bad spot before your consciousness even realizes what is happening.

Now if you have time to realize what your hand is doing, and you leave it, well that's just dumb.

Fortunately the instant a finger-tip made contact, my body immediately treated it like I touched an electric fence and forcibly recoiled my arm instead of attempting to complete the catch.

You laugh, but it's a natural instinct that people have. People racing open vehicles like sprint cars have to actively train themselves not to do this if they flip and instead cross their arms over their chests (this also keeps them from holding on the steering wheel which will also cause injury).

I'm a human person, so I understand, but it's a vehicle.... like common sense tells you that you can't stop it from tipping over. Idk, i guess I'd have to be in the situation, but i feel like i would make sure all my limbs are tucked away

Assuming uniform probability for each finger (unlikely, you're not likely to lose finger A and finger C but keep finger B between them, but we'll assume it for ease of calculation):

That's the probability he can't flip you off with his right hand only. (Basically for any finger you choose, it has a 70% chance to be lost, and a 30% chance to be kept.)

There's a 6.6_% chance he keeps both middle fingers.

A 23.3_% chance he keeps left but not right.

A 23.3_% chance he keeps right but not left.

For a total of 53.3_% chance he keeps at least one (but possibly both) middle fingers.

So a little worse than 50/50 he can't flip you off anymore.

Back in the 70s I worked in a walk-in counseling center. I had a client who was a teenager who had her arm resting on the windowsill of the car she was riding in. It skinned her arm from a few inches below her elbow to a couple of inches above it. She was a sweet attractive young lady who was a year from graduating high school and facing years of skin grafts.
