PSA That leaked City Hall number is a wish list, not your tax increase

It’s time to cut through the bullshit again, this time about your property taxes.

By now, you’ve probably seen a huge number leaked out of City Hall, and a rage-farming City politician thinks that you are stupid and will believe that this is the tax increase coming your way.

That’s the first piece of bullshit.

As reported in the media, the number is what you get when you take every department request, every proposed program, every spending increase, every want and every wish, every downloaded responsibility from the provincial government, add them all together.

That’s a wish list, not a tax increase.

The second piece of bullshit is the accusation that Council desperately wanted to keep this secret from you.

When private personal information involved, we don’t have a choice. As mayor, I’m leading a serious budget process that is looking at everything. Potential cuts. Staffing changes. Contracts. Negotiations. Agreements with outside partners. There are real people and real livelihoods behind those numbers. This is information we are legally required to protect.

We do not get to throw somebody’s private information into the public because a politician thinks you are too stupid to read past the headline. And ignoring those obligations puts you, the taxpayer on the hook for potentially major legal claims and liabilities.

The third piece of bullshit is pretending this number is inevitable.

We heard that same garbage when this Council took office. We started with a number around 6% and brought it down to 1.2%.

We went through the budget. We challenged assumptions. We found savings. We made choices about what Calgary needs and what City Hall simply wants. We prioritized public safety and we made hard decisions to fund the replacement to the Bearspaw Feedermain.

But what isn’t bullshit is our record. We brought that 6% number all the way down to a 1.2% municipal tax increase, while the provincial government increased their share by more than 20%.

Calgary families are under pressure. Your groceries cost more. Your mortgage or rent costs more. Your utilities cost more.

At the same time, we need police officers responding to calls. We need firefighters showing up when you need them. We need buses and trains running. We need roads maintained and clean water coming out of your tap.

Those are the kinds of needs we’re going to fight like hell to prioritize.

Calgary Transit Online gaming ads next to high schools

I've noticed a couple of these ads right next to high schools. This one's right next to James Fowler, and there was another one next to Sir Winston Churchill. There are AGLC rules against advertising online gaming next to high schools (see second photo). http://aglc.ca/sites/aglc.ca/files/2026-06/26-06-18%20SRIG_0.pdf

If you don't like these, please consider submitting a complaint to:

  • the AGLC as the regulator of online gaming
  • FarWest Outdoor as the transit bench advertising partner
  • Andre Chabot and John Pantazopoulos as Chair/Vice Chair of the Infrastructure & Planning committee.

This guy ought to be censured for this. He did it for headlines and thinks this is a proper way for the city to do its business.

This July, I finally visited Calgary (as well as Canmore and Banff) for the first time as a tourist from Toronto to celebrate finishing uni. I had a lovely time here. The stampede and downtown were a nice change of pace. The people I interacted with were very friendly and made navigating the city way easier. So thank you for the wonderful time, y'all have been great!

4th Street NW at 30th Ave near Queens Park Cemetery. Indoor cat who likes to escape to chase bugs and other cats. Missing since about 1 am.

Grey, chunky, large head and fat cheeks, blue collar with bell and tags, male. Will run from people and noise so may be hiding under a deck or in a garage but can meow when hiding if he hears talking. Phone number on tag.

(This is the only pic with his whole body sorry)

Eat/Drink Local Legendary Shelby's shawarma disappointment.

Post image
30 Upvotes

Have you guys been already at Shelby's?

I went in genuinely excited to try their shawarma. I came out wondering how something with so much potential could taste so… aggressively disappointing.

Two wraps I ordered had an incredibly plain and dry taste. The real star of the show was the burnt 🔥 lavash flavor.

They also put wedges inside the wraps. I’m still trying to understand that decision.

To complete the experience, I ordered two smoothies. One of them(strawberry)tasted like someone accidentally dropped a handful of salt into the blender. Perhaps they accidentally added salt instead of sugar or used an ayran base instead of milk. Let it be their secret.

If you ever tried a product at Jerusalem Shawarma or Shawarma palace. You will be disappointed as well.

Recommendations Looking for a female GP doctor or specialist that will Rx HRT for peri-menopause

My family GP is a good doctor, but he is a bit old and not read up on current HRT treatments for peri-menopause symptoms. I'm looking for recommendations in Calgary to a female GP or specialist that is able to Rx for HRT for peri-menopause. I have found some clinics, but just looking to hear if anyone has recommendations for a doctor who is covered by Alberta Healthcare rather than having to pay out of pocket. Thank you for your help!

Local Artist/Musician Musicians on 12th Ave Today

Does anyone know the names of the musicians who were playing on 12th ave and 11th street around 1145 today? They were a duo recording themselves rapping and singing. One had long dark hair and the other’s was short and beached. They were soooo goood!

I wanted to ask them how to find their music, but had to head out before I could (got caught in the rain without a jacket). Hoping someone here knows who they are. :)

Question Pulsating tone in SE Calgary at night - anyone else hear it?

Upvotes

Probably some sort of machinery but if I'm up late at night, I hear a fairly loud hum that is coming from outside even when I'm in the house. I checked the pitch and it's approximately a G#. It goes on for just over a second and then off, and continues on/off like this for hours. I tried contacting 311 (months ago) to see what it is but that didn't get very far. I guess I'm going to have to drive around one night and try to pin-point the source.

Local Shopping/Services Art classes/courses

Hi! I’m hoping to get better at painting and drawing, so I’m looking for any art classes in Calgary; I’m in the Bridgeland area so not too far from there/Downtown.
I’d love to specifically find a watercolor class, but any other art class is good too, drawing for example.
Let me know if any of you have tried or know about some art classes/courses in the city!

Home Owner/Renter stuff Contractor for small roofing/attic job?

Recently had an electrician install a bathroom fan in a second floor bathroom. There's a gooseneck roof vent above the bathroom, but they told me they were not able to connect the fan to the vent. I went into the attic and discovered the inner part of the vent is missing so there's nothing to connect the ducting to.

I need a contractor to supply and install the missing inner piece ( I have the part#) or supply and install a new roof vent along with roughly 4-5ft of insulated ducting to my bathroom fan.

I talked to the company that did the roof install for the previous owner, but they don't seem interested in this work. I reached out to two other roofing companies that quoted me roughly $700 as their minimum charge. Hoping to find a contractor or a company who might be more focused on smaller jobs.

Local Shopping/Services Custom print T-shirt SAME DAY / OVERNIGHT printing ?

Hello y’all!

I left something to the last minute and need to find a place to custom print a t-shirt idea. It’s essentially text above some different coloured stripes in red. Nothing insane.

I’ve gone to Chinook mall before for something like this (on a whim because I thought it’d be fun) but I called Chinook mall and they informed me that place has closed or moved. I don’t now where they went either.

Does anyone know of someplace in Calgary that I can do same day or even overnight printing? I need to have it by 8pm tomorrow night.

Thank you all in advance.

Television/Film Where to watch college football?

Good morning, fellow kids.

I'm a big fan of American college football and it finally kicks off again for real this weekend after last weekend's teaser games.

Do you know of any bars or pubs around Calgary that would switch over to these games? Specifically the Oregon game, they play Boise State at 1:30pm MST.

A quick Google search indicates Brewhouse, Home and Away, etc. but I just thought I'd crowdsource a bit.

Thanks!

Exercise/Fitness City of Calgary Fitness Park Deerfoot City Location Parking?

So this seems like a pretty cool fitness park & I headed over this afternoon. Guess what I didn't find. Parking!

There is no legal parking anywhere close to this park. It was completely empty of people. There is a bus stop beside & area business all have private parking cars will be towed signs posted at each entrance. The street along both sides is no parking.

I never got the chance to really go look into the park as there was no where for me to stop & park to go check it out.

So it's intended only for local business employees to use? or is the idea I have to figure out bus routes & schedules and go then?

Has any one used that fitness park & figured out a parking solution?

In theory I suppose i could go after dark? but I don't really want to do that 😄
