Discussion New to PC gaming and I'm having doubts

Post image

Hi. So I bought a desktop PC this summer and this is the first desktop PC I've owned in like 15 years. I am still very intimidated by this big purchase and I want to make sure I take care of it since my last experience with a desktop pc was a disaster (I was in middle school back then...). Anyways, I have wanted to try pc gaming for a long time, but I don't have confidence to build my own pc so I decided to buy a prebuilt. I also hope to go back to school and take some online classes next semester.

The first thing I did when I set up was download Norton antivirus (it's what I used back in the day but now I'm reading that it sucks and it's not even worth it). I also downloaded Nvidia because I heard I should update the GPU graphics. Tbh I feel intimidated by all the hardware and software terms and what I should and shouldn't mess with. I don't want to mess too much with it because I fear I'll mess it up. But I've been getting these pop up alerts from norton saying there are issues slowing my pc and that my connectivity driver has a problem and that it's affecting my wifi and bluetooth connections. There are a couple of issues I've seen where this might be the reason why but again, I'm intimated about what to mess with.

I just need some tips or advice as a new pc/desktop user. I researched the basics before purchasing but I didn't expect to run into issues so soon. I feel almost ready to return it.. For reference, I purchased the ibuypower element pulse x with the following specs. I love feedback but pls be nice (':

Tech Support Multiple Windows apps stopped working after NVIDIA driver 616.56 update — DDU and System Restore didn't fix it

Hi everyone,

I'm having a really strange Windows/PC issue and I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what's going on.

The problems started immediately after I installed NVIDIA driver 616.56.

After the update, multiple completely unrelated applications started failing:

• Chrome shows:

"Profile error occurred"

"Something went wrong when opening your profile. Some features may be unavailable."

• Discord won't open.

• Snipping Tool won't open.

• Riot Client / VALORANT won't work and I'm getting a JavaScript error.

• I also can't properly reinstall Discord.

• spotify and deezer and LGhub and EPIC GAMES won't open (until now)

At first I thought the NVIDIA driver was definitely the cause because everything started right after the update.

What I've tried so far:

  1. System Restore to a restore point from before the NVIDIA update.

    → The issue remained.

  2. Booted into Safe Mode and used DDU to completely remove the NVIDIA driver.

→ Restarted and installed an older NVIDIA driver.

→ The exact same problems remained.

  3. I'm currently running:

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

It has been sitting at 64.1% for a while, so I'm waiting for it to finish.

I haven't reinstalled Windows yet because I'd like to understand what is actually broken first.

PC specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5700X

GPU: GTX 1650

Motherboard: Gigabyte B550M K

RAM: 16GB

Storage: 1TB SSD

OS: Windows 11

GPU driver: 616.56 was the driver that triggered the issue

Since DDU + an older NVIDIA driver and System Restore didn't fix it, I'm starting to think this might be a Windows/system component issue rather than the NVIDIA driver itself.

Would really appreciate any ideas on what I should check next.

Should I:

• Continue with DISM + SFC?

• Do a Windows repair reinstall using "Reinstall now" under Windows Update?

• Check/repair Microsoft Edge WebView2, Visual C++ runtimes, or something else?

• Is there a way to identify the exact Windows component causing all these applications to fail?

Thanks!

Hardware People are actually mental

I saw posted on gumtree a 3090 for £200...Which seems a little cheap. I messaged the buyer asking is it still avaliable and is there any chance i can come and take a look at it working and if its a good card, it's happily buy it there and then.

He was fine with that... an hour later he messages me saying someone wants the card and they'll send the money at 1pm bst time.....i explain id rather see the card working in front of me and make sure it's genuine because it seems a little too good to be true.

He then starts going on some tangent how he was in the army for 16 years and he can be trusted.

Yeah, be careful which people you try to do business with

Hi. My brother used to have this PC, bought one new, and told me I could have it for free (”free”) if I go and pay to fix it. I don't really know much about them, but I need it for college. Whaat happened here? I’m gonna go to a place, but I want to know first what this is.

Hardware Found a 4090, does it look salvageable ?

Dad found this, along with a rtx2070 and 1050.

I was excited but it doesn't fit into my wife's case and mine will be a pain to take apart and test this card.

The previous owner clearly didn't take care of the card, would it even boot up given how it looks ?

I mainly ask because the PCIe has a piece broken off!

Update: installed it, updated drivers, put a benchmark on 3d mark and it works!!

Feels like a won the GPU lottery.

Thank you for the help!

Final look! 🛠️

Got the finished WD3200AAKS teardown display mounted on the wall.

Really happy with how the actual parts + technical layout came together. Definitely looks better in person with the depth and glass.

Thanks for all the feedback on the original post!

Hardware I turned my old WD3200AAKS into a teardown display

Finally finished my HDD teardown wall display.

Took apart an old Western Digital Caviar Blue WD3200AAKS (320GB) and mounted the individual components onto an A3 technical-layout print.

Tried to make it look like a little engineering/museum exhibit rather than just putting the parts in a frame. 😄

Parts included: top cover, chassis, platter, voice-coil actuator, spindle hub/clamp, VCM magnets, controller PCB, filters/breather parts, and the screws.

Pretty happy with how it turned out.

What do you guys think?

Story WARNING: Scammed when selling two computers locally (fake transfer trick). Learn from my mistake!

Hi everyone,

English is not my main language, so I’m using a translator to write this post. I wanted to share my story as a warning so none of you make the same mistake I did.

Today, I fell for a very well-executed scam and lost two computers.

A guy came to my place to buy two PCs from me. He was extremely polite, friendly, and seemed totally trustworthy. He told me a whole story about himself, tested the computers thoroughly, and agreed to buy them.

When it came to payment, he said he sent the money via a bank transfer on his phone. He showed me a confirmation screen (and even sent me a confirmation) that looked legitimate at first glance, though in hindsight, it was fake. He assured me the money was on its way and would post during the next banking clearing session. Because he was so nice and convincing, I made a huge mistake: I trusted him and let him leave with both computers before the money actually hit my account.

Shortly after he left, the money didn't arrive. At first, he kept in touch, making excuses like "I'll send you a contract soon" or sending short SMS replies like "I'm busy, can talk in 10 minutes." Eventually, he stopped picking up the phone altogether.

I immediately went to the police. At first, they were reluctant to take a formal report because the clearing hours hadn't passed yet and he was still replying to texts. However, once it was clear the transfer was fake and he went silent, I gathered all the evidence I had—his phone number, chat history, SMS messages, and the fake transfer confirmation—and went back to file an official report for fraud.

Key takeaways and red flags to watch out for:

NEVER hand over items based on a confirmation screenshot or PDF. These can be easily faked or generated by fake banking apps/websites.

Only release the item when the money is physically visible in your account (or use cash / instant transfers like BLIK where you see the balance update live).

Scammers are often extremely nice and charismatic. Being polite and open is their main tactic to lower your guard.

I've accepted that I made a naive mistake and might never see those computers again, but I hope reading this saves at least one of you from losing your tech. Stay safe out there!

My last picture of my PCs

  • My comment: I was expecting a public execution right after I made this post but Instead I have received so much positive energy from you guys. I am broke inside right now, can't even think about this situation. THANK YOU

+2: I have been to police office, I have shown them his face as I have got a monitoring system AND THEY KNOW HIM ALREADY. He is just a little thief that steals people's goods the same way. I left every each evidence I had and they told me to wait for I formation back. It might take one day or 10 years. Let's wait then

Discussion What’s the absolute stupidest thing you’ve spent money on in this hobby?

We’ve all made some questionable financial choices when building or upgrading our setups. Whether it was buying ridiculously overpriced custom cables, RGB specs that added zero performance, or some random gimmick accessory you used for two days and threw in a drawer.

For me, it’s gotta be dropping extra cash on a high end nzxt fans that I dont even use now, just for "cleaner aesthetics", but i switched them out for plain black cheap arctic fans 😂.

For those who don't know Nexus Mods acquired SteamDB and I am pretty scared that the website will be looking like this in a few months.

I want to clarify that I do not want to hate xPaw for his decision, it makes sense that he would burn out after so many years of running a website like this for free without ads but I am kinda sad its probably going to end like this. This is just for the memes!
