Question Blacksmith.sh GitHub runners

I signed up for blacksmith about a week in I’ve got a $7 bill already. I’m also getting you’ve hit 80% of your free mins and you should add a payment method.

I’m seriously confused after being extremely impressed by how fast their runners are. Now I’m wondering what the heck is going on.

I tried to reach out to them but need a payment method to contact billing and no reply on the support@ email.

I’m happy to pay as the service is good but really surprised how they work/do business. I feel I could easily be in for future bull shocks.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Looks like I’m not the only one hit by this - https://forestwalk.ai/blog/surprise-blacksmith-costs/

Question Free hosting for small dynamic website compatible with github

Hey! I am recently getting into web development and I am wanting to start a blog that I own and can fully customize and build from the ground up. I first was using GitHub because I have some experience using it with other projects and it has pages which is free and built right into the platform. However I have realized that a static website may not have the capabilities that I am wanting.

I am wondering what options are there for hosting. I don't need anything crazy I doubt I will really get any traffic but I want it to be able to be up so I can view whenever and show it to people. And I will be doing all development in GitHub so I don't need really any features besides the bare minimum.

I would prefer something that has the ethical values of open source, transparency, and caution with ai, but beggars can't be choosers.

(Capabilities wanted: conversion of plain text database [containing title body images tags] to blog posts either using prebuilt general formatting or custom formatting for specific post. Search function. As far as I know these capabilities are not available in a static page.)

I assume I got plenty of things wrong in this post, as again, I am new to web development so please educate me in the comments!

Question Repositories cannot be transferred to the original owner?

Trying to transfer a repository from my account back to another and I get this error:

I googled this exact error and got exactly 0 results and can't find anything online about it. How has no-one ever had this issue before? Why can't I do this? Anyone know why this is a restriction?

Edit 3: It seems like the website has been taken down, not long ago.

Discussion When did GitHub stars become the KYC check for OSS credits and cloud catalogs?

I'm the maintainer of LibreDB Studio (MIT, self-hosted web DB GUI). This is not a launch post. I am stuck on a metric I cannot honestly farm.

The project is ten months old. Postgres.org lists it as a client; Redis, ClickHouse and Druid docs mention it. We keep a public distribution inventory (`distribution/channels.yaml`) because I treat “can you actually install this” as part of the product.

That file currently says : 26 live channels.** Live examples, not a tour: GHCR (canonical image) and Docker Hub (discoverability mirror), Helm and Rancher Partner Charts, OpenShift opereator, npm / Homebrew / Snap / winget / Chocolatey, DigitalOcean Marketplace, Railway, Dokploy, CapRover, TrueNAS, Unraid, plus a desktop AppImage. CasaOS, Umbrel and Portainer PRs are still open. Deprecated on purpose: Flathub declined the app under their generative-AI policy; we closed the PR rather than argue. Linux Flatpak users go through FlatPark instead.

On the credit / catalog side I have been accepted in places that reviewed the repo, the license, and the image. GCP is one of them (not in that live matrix yet). Smaller catalogs and some OSS support programs still bounce the same application with one number: **you need 10k GitHub stars.**

Numbers I can defend today (2026-09-02):

- GitHub stars: **395**

- GHCR `ghcr.io/libredb/libredb-studio` (canonical): **26.8k**

- Docker Hub `libredb/libredb-studio` (mirror): **76,741**

- Together that is **100k pulls of the same image across two registries**. I am not calling that 100k unique humans. CI, Kubernetes, and `latest` retags all count. I am also not stuffing npm into this total, `@libredb/studio` is a launcher, a few thousand downloads / 30 days.

People who pull from GHCR or Hub almost never open the GitHub repo, so they never star. A 10k-star gate is still 25× the badge. For a tool that is supposed to live next to a database, I do not know a clean way to close that gap that is not “go viral” or “put a star modal in the GUI.” I will not do the second one.

I know why the 10k checkbox exists. Coding-agent PRs are a flood. Reviewing them is unpaid hours. I get those PRs too, drive-by diffs that look finished and are not, “fixes” that do not compile, issues that are a paste from a chat. I close a lot of them. I am not asking anyone to lower their bar for slop.

What I am stuck on is that **stars do not measure that work.** A catalog cannot see that I rejected the junk and still shipped Helm, an operator bundle, and an image people actually pull. The gate I hit is a popularity badge, not a review-load badge.

If you have walked this:

  1. Did any program accept registry pulls, a distro listing, or Helm instead of stars, or is 10k always a hard floor?
  2. If you later crossed 10k, was it one front-page hit or years of boring use?
  3. Is asking Docker users to star even legitimate?
  4. If you maintain something and you found a program that scored review signal, tests, or distro listings instead of the star count, what did they actually ask for?

Inventory: https://github.com/libredb/libredb-studio/blob/main/distribution/channels.yaml

note: when we discussed this in another subreddit, the general recommendation was to redirect Docker pulls to ghcr.io.

Question How can I hide activity of a specific repository?

In the past I used my github profile to work on school project and the repo contains personal data that I would not like to associate with my github account. However on my account, you can publicly find the repo via my activity.

Can I somehow hide this activity or dissociate my account with this repo? I don't have admin permissions over this repo.

Discussion Github Repo health Checks

Good evening, Im working on a process where I want to check the health of repositories. We have about 30 repo's and so far I have created a GitApp to go through and check for things like when the last pr was done, how old are branches, last commit, how many branches etc.. Based on our rules it will show all this information and output if its in good health or needs attention .

I now want to take take that information and generate a health report using co pilot and send the health report to the team leads every 2 weeks so they can address any issues or things that need attention. So the team leads will get a health report for the repos associated with that team. At the end of the month we get have a meeting and go over our repo health. For the automated emailing of the health reports Im going to use a git actions. I'm using git actions to run with my health monitoring code. For code reviews we set it up in github to assign code reviews randomly when a code review is requested hoping this will make people review code.

Some questions I have for fellow repo managers see below.

What are some good things to add for rules to consider healthy?
What are some rules to consider for for repos that need attention?
Is this a good process and has anybody done this process or have a different route?
Does Wiz Scan work well and how does it work?
Anybody else have thought, ideas on this topic?

Any help, ideas, suggestion would be great. I was tasked with this from my boss and I'm new to this so keep that in mind. lol

Question Can't claim Github external student benefits.

So: I am inside my account settings:
https://github.com/settings/education/benefits, I then click on "here" and land on https://education.github.com/pack where I am trying to claim the "name.com" benefit, but when I click the login button I just get redirected back to https://github.com/settings/education/benefits

I tried to clear cache, cookies, multiple browsers and even incognito browser.

Back in july Github made a announcement about doing a giveaway limited to 1,000 CDs with your personal repo written on them

twitter post
form submission

And well considering we are now at the end of august I find it strange there is nothing online at all roughly after july 6th (the supposed end date for the form submission... although the form was pulled a day earlier so yea...) I personally just want to know what the CDs looked like lol

Question Can't sign into github on desktop

Thumbnail

I'm trying to log into github on desktop, but it keeps loading indefinitely. When it says I'm being redirected to the authorized application, it doesn't actually redirect me anywhere, so I click on the hyperlink, "this setup page", which brings up the github desktop window, this time with the message, "Failed retrieving authenticated user".
I suspect this might have something to do with me changing my user name recently.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Question Unable to delete account due to error

I have full access to my GitHub account, but every time I try to delete it I get this error: "Cannot delete account. Please contact support."

Fair enough, so I contact them through ticket support, and I get ignored for several days. Email privacy, automated response and nothing. I just emailed dpo, but I have low hopes.

How else can I reach them? Has anyone had a similar issue? I don't have any outstanding bill, nor an ongoing subscription, nor can I identify any issue that would cause this. As a last resort I might file a complaint with the data protection agency of my country.

Question Mirroring a repo in an Action fails after update to latest pinned version numbers

I have some repos in one organisation that, for historical reasons, are mirrored in another organisation. To do the mirroring, I have the following code setup as a GH action:

    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@3d3c42e5aac5ba805825da76410c181273ba90b1 # v7.0.1
        with:
          fetch-depth: 0 # required for mirroring, see https://stackoverflow.com/a/64272409/474349

      - name: Copy to Cloudyr
        if: github.repository_owner == 'Azure' && runner.os == 'Linux' && github.ref == 'refs/heads/master'
        env:
          token: "${{ secrets.ghPat }}"
        # git config hack required, see https://stackoverflow.com/q/64270867/474349
        run: |
          export CLOUDYR_REPO=$(echo $GITHUB_REPOSITORY | sed "s/Azure/cloudyr/")
          git config -l | grep 'http\..*\.extraheader' | cut -d= -f1 | \
            xargs -L1 git config --unset-all
          git push --prune https://token:$token@github.com/${CLOUDYR_REPO}.git +refs/remotes/origin/*:refs/heads/* +refs/tags/*:refs/tags/*

... more steps ...

This copies the repo from the Azure org to Cloudyr, and worked perfectly for years. Yesterday the GH dependabot made a PR to update all the pinned version numbers to the latest (v7.0.1 for the checkout action, as seen above). Since then, the step has failed at this point:

Run export CLOUDYR_REPO=$(echo $GITHUB_REPOSITORY | sed "s/Azure/cloudyr/")
# [debug]/usr/bin/bash -e /home/runner/work/_temp/9163680c-38a6-43e6-8b4f-4f62fa2c4dcc.sh
Error: Process completed with exit code 123.

You can see the repo and full log here.

Does anyone know what's causing this problem, and how I can fix it?

Discussion What the heck happened to repository search?!

It's probably been a week or so since I've noticed, but GitHub's search *does not* work.

I was looking at https://github.com/eclipse-tycho/tycho, and searched for "tycho.localArtifacts" (quotes included). No results. Impossible because I remember the codebase.

And in fact here it is.

This is just an example but I can reproduce in many other repositories. This used to work perfectly fine.

Anyone else can repro?
