Question Do I need a professional GitHub Profile Picture and Username ?
Hi guys, I'm a computer science major student in college and I have a GitHub Account but I'm not sure if I need to change my GitHub Account profile picture to a professional profile picture like in LinkedIn ? Does anyone know ? Also, does my GitHub username need to be professional ?

It's not important at all. I'm a software engineer and even on LinkedIn I don't use my photo, yet people are still sending me a connection requests and following me on GitHub.
Just don't use any inappropriate usernames or photos/avatars and you'll be fine.

I’m going to go against the majority here (who I think are wrong), the current state of hiring has you competing against so many others for the same role, I think you should be doing the best to present yourself across anything a potential employer might look at.
Someone is going to end up reviewing your GitHub, even if it’s not part of the interview process itself you’ll have people who are interested to see what you’ve worked on / are interested in. The more pleasant of an experience this is the more you’ll stand out.
Some tips:
- I don’t think having a professional headshot is required (though I do have one myself), a little cartoon avatar or something similar is acceptable, once it’s professional.
- I would have your GitHub user name as some variation of your own name if possible, it adds authenticity.
- Having a GitHub profile readme is a massive stand out: https://docs.github.com/en/account-and-profile/how-tos/profile-customization/managing-your-profile-readme, I’d suggest having one that’s a more casual version of what you’re saying on LinkedIn. “I like working on x, using y, z” etc.
- Demos/projects/code: you need stuff on it, half baked ideas, abandoned projects, the projects you’ve made during uni that everyone has seen a hundred times. Fork / star projects you’re interested in, it lets people understand what you’re interested in / like to consider.
One thing you are going to hear from recruiters in particular is that your GitHub should be clean with just projects you’ve finished off and nice demos. Ignore this advice. Recruiters aren’t developers and they don’t hire developers.
Your GitHub should be your playground, ideally you’ve a nice curated readme on your profile, pointing to a project or two you’re happy with / almost done with, but it doesn’t need to be this perfect portfolio, when it is, it seems wrong.
In terms of what I actually review when I’m looking at GitHub profiles:
- latest projects they’ve worked on, what have they been focused on, what does their code look like on recent projects
- their commit messages, cannot stress this enough but if your commit messages are just “update” i am moving to the next candidate.
- if they’ve committed secrets. I once cancelled an upcoming interview with a candidate when I discovered they had committed a secret into their personal repository, which enabled me to elevate myself into their current employers production environment, don’t do this.
- what projects they’ve starred , if they’ve made any open source contributions

Upvoted for rational truth.
The market is tough out there. When I was hiring, I always went to people's github profiles.
I would have your GitHub user name as some variation of your own name if possible, it adds authenticity.
Or get a time machine and do what I did, wander into some new site one day and get a three letter username.

No. You need a Codeberg.org account. There is no need for a Microsoft GitHub account in these days. ;)

It definitely doesn’t matter right now for you but let me share a cautionary tale to others in this thread.
My GH and LI used to have profile pictures that were not of my face. I never thought much of it as I’m not regularly going on there for networking.
I have about a decade of experience so my LinkedIn looks decent on its surface. A (likely NK) impersonator found it and created a fake personal website that linked to both of those accounts. The website was filled with nuggets from my Li but largely fabricated and had pictures of the impersonator. They were applying to jobs using my LinkedIn and GitHub as credibility. Thankfully the company they interviewed with had a connection to someone I knew so that’s how I found out in the first place.
Face on profile pictures from here on out!

Picture is not a big deal on GitHub. Wouldn’t hurt to have one. But that is not what people on GitHub are looking at

As long as your username is not something like "NaziSympathizer42069", and your profile picture is not an anime girl with huge tits, you will be fine

My company generates their own purely name based GH accounts. We can set our own avatars.
For your portfolio (GH, LinkedIn) pre-hiring, ask an AI to suggest how to make it best presentable. Personally I care about good code examples and if you have been able to, open source contributions, more than your username. One polite, well thought out, well communicated PR to a Foss project, and in general all of your commit messages, tells me more about you as a potential team mate than all the behavioural interviews.

GitHub profiles are becoming one of the most increasingly valuable profiles
Nowadays with AI, everyone is generating picture perfect resume and the only real differentiator some recruiters see is a good GitHub profile. This means contributions, projects, a bio about what you do and any picture should be fine. Username doesn’t need to be professional but it’s your tag on GitHub so pick wisely.
You can also add a readme in your GitHub profile to make it stand out and put some SVG in this readme. I have done mine in a similar way

i recommend you don’t dox yourself with a professional name. our usernames and profiles are public facing. you being a developer are a high value target. if a company wants your real name in the private repo, you simply override your name in git for that repo. you are still the same user.
so yuh, my name is not professional, nor is my photo.

I would advise picking a username you won't regret. For me I was boring and went with my name abbreviated. Profile pic is me skating lol but doesn't hurt to have a cohesive looking account

If your good enough yeah. But generally as long as what you have isn't obscene or edgy you're fine though it very much depends on employers. I simply use clippy and it has not caused any issues

I have a little photograph of a cloud as my profile picture and a nickname someone gave me as a kid as my username. Nobody cares.

Depends on the company I guess. Our most senior Staff Dev just has the default githup pixelated picture, and his gamer handle as a username, note that his handle is not inappropriate.
