This is how I drive in my dreams

197

u/luchomaker 17h ago

I have dreams where I am trying to drive from the backseat and it is the most stressful dream ever (besides losing my teeth dreams).

57

u/RandomDave70 17h ago

I have these dreams, too. Inevitably, they end with me trying to reach the brake pedal and it being too far away and I jolt awake in a panic!

20

u/MissnThePoint 13h ago

so nice to know it's not just me. I actually had these dreams before I even had a license. why would I be in the back seat?!

2

u/Formal_Owl_400 6h ago

It means you're not in control of your life. Hindbrain vs. Forebrain.

1

u/ch-12 4h ago

I feel like it’s been awhile, but I definitely had that recurring dream as well.

13

u/neurdle 14h ago

Yes, reaching the brake pedal! Also sometimes I'm driving in reverse and that's even worse.

2

u/Aurora_Uplinks 10h ago

Its a dream, just command the car to slow down and come to a safe halt.

3

u/Maybe_A_Zombie 10h ago

I'll have dreams where my breaks dont work or BARELY work and ill be speeding downhill dodging cars. whyre brains like this

1

u/disdain4dogs 5h ago

Same, Zombie. Same. I have to use the force of a thousand feet to stop the car right before it hits something.

1

u/macdennism 3h ago

OMG SAME!!! I hate those dreams. Or I try to park my car and it just starts rolling away 😭 I once had a dream that my car rolled back down the driveway and into a flooded, fast current creek. That was one where I thought it was real and I was like 🥲 my car! 💔

2

u/ThinkAThirdTime 13h ago

I only jolt awake after I've managed to go over an edge and am on the long fall off the side of the bridge.

Until then, it's the mounting panic as I turn a minor fender bender into a hit and run and a major accident.

Which is hilarious, because IRL, I'm a super careful driver (full stop every sign, proper signalling, spacing, check blind spots, never go above the speed limit, etc.), but in my dreams, I'm unable to keep control of my vehicle as I keep going too fast for conditions and can't seem to slow myself down.

2

u/cma09x13amc 11h ago

Wtf... I thought this was just me. Nothing new under the sun.

1

u/Pyodra 8h ago

Same here! I'm always driving a comfortable speed and then the car in front of me stops suddenly and I jam the brake, but nothing happens. Jolt awake as soon as the impacts happens. I hate it 😩

1

u/zoeofdoom 5h ago

I wonder if people have been having these types of dreams forever, just with horses or sleds or boats, or are cars an especially terrifying invention to our unconscious? The brakes not working because they're far away is the weirdly universal bit that really gets me.

1

u/unembellishing 4h ago

I have these dreams somewhat frequently, but not once have the brakes been too far from me. It's always that I'm slamming on the breaks but they're just not working

2

u/Jaybru17 10h ago

Mine end when I try to leap into the front seat

2

u/takemy_oxfordcomma 2h ago

Omg I’m so glad I’m not the only one! It’s a recurring dream of mine where I’m driving from the backseat and can’t reach the pedals and I have no idea why

1

u/BricriuTheTrickster 8h ago

In mine I've got all of my weight on the brake but the car just sloooowly inches forward and won't stop. Or I will be barely moving and the car just flips over. I've had these dreams enough that my conscious brain has learned that I can fix it and flip the car back over. In one dream I just picked it up out of a pool haha. They're so stressful though

19

u/accidentalscientist_ 16h ago

How about those dreams when you need to use the bathroom really bad but all the stalls have no doors or really short walls so everyone can see you and all the toilets are dirty and filled to the brim??? Need to go so bad but there are only bad options available.

8

u/OldManJim374 15h ago

Never had a dream like that, but I have dreams where I need to pee and I keep getting interrupted so I never get to go.

Side note: if I ever need to pee in a dream that means I need to pee in real life. So when that happens I start trying to wake myself up.

7

u/thatcleverchick 16h ago

I have those too!! It's when I need to wake up to pee real bad

5

u/isarobs 15h ago

I have the grossly dirty bathrooms in my dreams. I usually wake up and am so happy to be using my clean bathroom.

2

u/MackTuesday 14h ago

Or I'm in someone's house, and every toilet I can find turns into a drawer, or somehow doesn't have a drain. Or I find a proper toilet, and stand there and pee and pee and pee with no relief.

1

u/luchomaker 16h ago

I've never had one of those dreams (why did you put this into my head!!) but I am so sorry because that sounds terrible.

1

u/olily 14h ago

Man, I dreamed the other night I was shitting. It felt so real. I jumped up and ran to the bathroom. I wasn't shitting. I didn't even feel the need to. So what the hell was that dream all about?

1

u/gnomi_malone 13h ago

oh you need to visit r/mallworld

1

u/Ristray 11h ago

I've had those types of bathroom dreams and then I also have bathroom dreams where I go in things that are not toilets. Like drawers. I'm so scared that one day I'll wake up to a wet bed. T_T

1

u/EricTouch 11h ago

Well, the good news is that if you're having one of these dreams, you'll always wake up with a dry bed! The stream of consciousness is just: I need to go to the bathroom-I can't go to the bathroom here-I can't find somewhere to go to the bathroom. And then you basically just start coming up with reasons why you can't but it never seems to occur to you that it's because you're in your bed lmao

1

u/EnvironmentalBrick18 11h ago

Did not expect to see my main two recurring dreams discussed in r/dashcams. Reddit rules sometimes

1

u/accidentalscientist_ 10h ago

I have the driving dreams where I drive like this video no matter what I do, the ones about my teeth falling out like the person I responded to has. And the bathroom ones I mention.

I raise you another: trying to use my phone to call 911 or someone very important. Phone doesn’t work. I somehow cannot type 911 into the keypad. 991. 91111. 822. Any number of combo and it doesn’t work. Or I can’t find a contact I know I have. I call everyone but who I need! I just can’t use the phone. Had that one last night!

1

u/EnvironmentalBrick18 9h ago

It’s the pooping on a dirty toilet in full sight and the backseat driving for me. I used to get the teeth falling out dream (or my teeth being so wobbly and crooked I couldn’t close my mouth properly), but I haven’t had that for years now.

I also used to dream about finding coins in dirt all the time. Not high value, but enough of them to make it a significant amount of spending money. That also feels like it has stopped now.

1

u/funkydonkey420 11h ago

The Bathrooms is a liminal space for sure

1

u/ElfegoBaca 9h ago

Great. Now I’m going to have this dream tonight.

1

u/Downtown_Caramel4833 7h ago

Another classic one...

Dreaming about eating a giant marshmallow only to wake up and be missing a pillow.

1

u/wakner 6h ago

I feel so seen (now, and in the dream)

1

u/darktrain 4h ago

Omg I have these dreams more often than I'd like. So stressful. I thought it was just me!

13

u/Worried-Crazy-9435 17h ago

This is how I once lucid dreamed. I like snapped to in the dream and was like why am I stressing and I jumped out the window and started flying 😂😂 but it was short lived and have never done it since

2

u/TheWolphman 15h ago

I don't really remember much about my dreams, and I don't think I've lucid dreamed per se, but I do recall on more than one occasion that when the dream starts to get uncomfortable, I have the realization that I'm dreaming and question it, but I always just end up waking up.

2

u/Worried-Crazy-9435 15h ago

That means you’re close I think !

2

u/LetsDue 13h ago

lol one of my few lucid dreams was similar, someone was shooting at me/us and while running away I thought “fuck this” and just took off flying instead, that couldn’t last long because it snapped me into lucidity and I woke up

1

u/Worried-Crazy-9435 11h ago

The human mind is a wild place🤣🤣

7

u/Objective-Reveal-170 17h ago

I have both of those dreams all the time 😂

7

u/Fwayfwayjoe 16h ago

I have these dreams too. What’s funny is that I always end up asking myself “what was I thinking? Why would I do this?”

2

u/CyanStripedPantsu 16h ago

It's crazy how universal our dreams are

#3 stressful dream is being sent back to elementary school and still failing because I keep sleeping in and missing class.

2

u/TransportationNo6983 13h ago

For me it is being back in high school and I can’t remember my locker combination but ALL of my stuff is in my locker.

2

u/Mittens_McFluffy 14h ago

This is hilarious. Same. I probably have a back seat driving dream once a month. I wake up and think, that is so dumb. Funny how humans have such similar dreams with odd specifics.

2

u/Rechium 14h ago

Oh god I’m so happy I stopped having these lol.

2

u/doubleshotinthedark 14h ago

if you have recurring dreams about losing your teeth, I think you should look into getting a nightguard

source: I used to have recurring nightmares about losing my teeth, then I cracked them because I was grinding them in my sleep. I got a nightguard and I don't have those nightmares anymore.

2

u/KuritonPaviaani 14h ago

Tried driving in a dream with the car seat being 2 meters above the actual car? While still in the back seat at the same time. Those 5km/h drives are STRESSFUL.

1

u/luchomaker 14h ago

Just as stressful as where you are being chased and your feet are moving like they are stuck in mud. Anxiety dreams are not fun.

2

u/walter-hoch-zwei 14h ago

I used to take naps in my car. Like every 3rd time, I had this exact dream.

2

u/LoverOfPricklyPear 13h ago

I do to!!! Why?! It is sooooo random?? It's one of 2 reoccuring dreams I have. Has honestly been forever since I've dreamt it, but it was once a rangular.

1

u/luchomaker 13h ago

Anxiety dreams. But just know you are normal for having them :)

2

u/EarlyInside45 13h ago

Me too! I also have dreams where I can't see well and forget how to use my cell phone.

1

u/Shaded-Haze 15h ago

So whats the deal with those dreams where you lose your teeth anyway? The relief when I wake up and its all there...

1

u/luchomaker 15h ago

Uncontrollable stress in life? I have no idea. I am also so thankful I have all my teeth after those dreams.

1

u/doubleshotinthedark 14h ago

you may be grinding your teeth in your sleep. my recurring nightmares stopped after I got a nightguard. (But not before I cracked my molars...)

1

u/eskwild 14h ago

I loved that dream. They turned to babies in my hand.

1

u/allie-the-cat 14h ago

Omg. Mine are always I try to brake but I do too late / the brakes fail

1

u/bjinks414 13h ago

Omg I have this recurring dream too often! And usually I’m going down a hill and trying to see around the drivers seat headrest

1

u/effexoreffect 12h ago

I have the driving from the back seat dreams too! They are so weird and stressful.

1

u/ZLiteStar 12h ago

In complete sincerity, I'm so happy you wrote this. I thought I'd be the only person with "trying to drive from the backseat" nightmares.

1

u/BlessTheBookPeople 12h ago

It’s funny, I used to have these dreams when I was learning how to drive but once I felt more comfortable they stopped.

1

u/Feeling_Inside_1020 10h ago

Oh goddamn you had to bring up the losing your teeth pulling them accidentally out or just falling out, fucking nightmare, I just now checked my teeth lol.

1

u/Prestigious_Yak8551 9h ago

This is so weird. I too have had dreams of driving my (previous) car from the back seat, and being unable to control it or see properly. I am pretty sure I have had this dream multiple times as well.

1

u/limpbiscuitzandtea 9h ago

ooooh I get these too. I also get a version where I'm sitting way too low can't see over the dashboard and am essentially driving blind

1

u/wbrd 9h ago

That's wild. I usually end up naked at work, wondering how to get somewhere I can find pants.

1

u/April_Mist_2 9h ago

FWIW, from a dream dictionary -- Dreams about driving symbolize the control you feel of your own life. If you can't reach the brakes, consider whether your life is out of control and needs some stabilizing changes made.

Dreams about your teeth reflect your anxieties about your appearance and how others perceive you

1

u/CarlsBadtheGreat 8h ago

Why?? What are these dreams? I have these two dreams at least twice a month. And then the one where I can’t run so I skip. What’s wrong with us? I literally barely dream but if I do, it’s these 3 on repeat. Helpppp!

1

u/mr_keegz 8h ago

Is someone knocking your teeth out in your dream or are you reaching into your mouth and pulling them out?

1

u/wadarheek 8h ago

Oh shit, I have those exact same dreams too. Like my FoV is set to 120 and I’m in the back seat. What does this mean lmao

1

u/Real_Pistil 5h ago

Me three! Can barely reach wheel/brakes (or can’t at all). Hurling down the freeway or a mountain pass…

1

u/NightStalkerXIV 1h ago

I hate losing/breaking/cracking teeth dreams...

One time I had one where the back molars came up in a flat row, and underneath was a cartoonishly stuck chicken bone in the gums and jaw like impacted wisdom teeth.

7

u/louielou8484 16h ago

I WAS JUST GOING TO WRITE THIS and then I saw your comment. I have vivid nightmares like this all the time where I drive exactly like this and I wake up and get scared to go out for the day, lol.

1

u/takemy_oxfordcomma 2h ago

Yeah, I have recurring dreams where I’m driving but can’t control the car for one reason or another. I’m trying to drive from the backseat for some reason and can’t reach the pedals, or even from the driver’s seat. Or I’m too out of it like the dude in this video and can’t drive properly.

I have no idea why but I’m guessing there’s a metaphor in there about not feeling in control of my life.

3

u/CTMalum 17h ago

I had a dream where I had somehow gotten my dream car but discovered it was utterly uncontrollable for reasons I couldn’t understand, despite having driven one just fine before. Handled just like this guy.

1

u/singlemale4cats 13h ago

Is your dream car a Dodge Viper

1

u/CTMalum 13h ago

Ferrari 458

1

u/zoeofdoom 5h ago

He probably thought he was having that dream, just in a jankier car (who knows, maybe that's his dream car!)

3

u/pi22seven 17h ago

Yeah, we’ve seen you.

2

u/proboscislounge 13h ago

I always drive up some hill that keeps getting steeper and steeper until the car is tipping over backwards

1

u/Diver_Ill 16h ago

Why did this trigger me so hard. My heart pumping!

1

u/skeletonhorse420 16h ago

Why do ditches look so good in dreams

1

u/king0ftherats 14h ago

I wish I could award this

1

u/T1Demon 14h ago

This is how I drive in GTA

1

u/HolyFlyingNuns 14h ago

This is how I drive on a regular. I have yet  too be pulled over yet, I must not be drinking enough. Lol, I have yet to do something stupid besides drinking and driving. Have saved myself from at least 4 ot 5 accidents by cool hand luking it.

1

u/FlowerBeneficial7193 13h ago

Your dreams have high latency

1

u/Wonderful_Emu_6483 13h ago

This is how I drive in video games (seriously I’m so bad at it I don’t understand how)

But on a serious note it’s these kinds of people on the road that give me anxiety every time I get in my car.

1

u/meruu_meruu 8h ago

Same, even before I actually drove. It made me really nervous about learning to drive!

1

u/macdennism 4h ago

It's the running the stop sign for me 🥴 in my dreams my brakes never fully work! I slow down and almost stop but my car keeps creeping into the intersection. And then I always get caught by a cop 😭🤣

13

u/PlanetoftheAtheists 17h ago

That two-story house was a clean and sober living environment for many years. It's in Aptos California. He was probably just on his way home.

5

u/cant_b_that_brad 14h ago

Then, shut up

2

u/Eastern_Patience4439 16h ago

GTA 6 looking lit

2

1

u/Superb-Attitude9606 15h ago

yeah QUIT RESISTING

1

u/RIPRIF20 16h ago

I'm actually impressed he found reverse as fast as he did

1

u/Kygunzz 16h ago

Did you notice the pool of liquid by the driver’s window immediately after it flipped? I think he was holding a drink LOL.

1

u/xbhaskarx 13h ago

Are you a cop??

1

u/Cute_Marzipan_4116 12h ago

Sauced or having a medical emergency. Both went through my mind. Then I got to the end of the video. Yep hammered.

1

u/What_a_fat_one 12h ago

Not necessarily. Might have a serious medical issue.

Innocent until proven guilty.

1

u/badcookies 11h ago

"I saw you run into all kinds of things dude"

"Then shut up"

1

u/WorthPlease 8h ago edited 8h ago

Could also be somebody on medications that shouldn't be driving.

1

u/BlackedoutJT 8h ago

everyone responding to the driving dream but the real story here is the losing your teeth dreams

1

u/Dupps_I_Did_It_Again 6h ago

Who just says shut up to someone checking on you after flipping your car. How are you that fucked but can somehow even remotely operate a vehicle. I wouldnt even be able to get the keys in the ignition.

1

u/ForeignWeb8992 5h ago

Yeah, till when the reverse lights came on I thought possible medical emergency but those lights said otherwise

1

u/EnoughEngineering306 46m ago

"Are you a cop?"

1

u/burnthreads 44m ago

Way too many road sodas
