Megathread [Discussion Thread] Weekend Megathread

Hello ladies and gents!

Welcome to the 'Weekend Thread', where people can post about what they're getting up to tonight, at the weekend, good places to go, photos of places you've been, advice on where to go, or just how your week went!

The premise is fairly simple.

- Please be civil

- NO POLITICS. Any political comments will be removed. This is a strictly meta thread, with discussion about people and their happenings.

- Post pictures, youtube links to music you're going to see, games you're going to watch, places you'd like to go (tripadvisor, google maps etc)

These comments will not be moderated unless it doesn't follow guideline one and two!

This post will be stickied until Sunday, allowing for discussion all weekend!

Someone shared this in the comments under another post and I thought it deserved greater visibility

A very deserving cause

I'm not an islander, so hopefully this post does not contravene the sub's no begging rule

Had my money on it being the other way round, though I suppose in May it's more likely that students will be back in the latter.

Question Why does Scotland have such terrible mobile service?

I move around a lot and can't even use the mobile data I pay for because most places have terrible signal, even in city centres. It's the same in Edinburgh, St Andrews, Dundee and Glasgow, with Glasgow being the worst. It's really frustrating, especially when you need the internet to navigate places.

Some places are perhaps neglected for a reason...

Side entrance of the former Good Templar Halls of 1881 in Dyer's Wynd in Paisley. Site of the worst cinema disaster in Scottish history at Hogmanay in 1929 when 71 children died after a call of "fire" resulted in a stampede for the exits.

Almost a thousand children were at a matinee screening of silent western Dude Desperado when a smoking film canister lead to the fire panic. Many ran downstairs to a padlocked fire escape. Suffocating children piled up against the inward-opening door, police couldn’t break it open from the outside.

The disaster lead to amendments to the Cinematograph Act 1909 to make it a legal requirement for cinemas to have an increased number of fire escapes, all outward-opening and fitted with push bars, and for seating capacities to reflect the number of exits.

Given Rockstars Scottish origin I’d love to see a car livery inspired by Tunnocks in the game.

Discussion Catman of Greenock.

Scots, I went to uni in Glasgow a few years back and one urban legend I heard a lot about was the Catman of Greenock. Apparently a stranded Russian sailor who lost both of his legs, retreated into the wilderness and for 40 years ate rats until in 2006 he was finally captured of camera.

Now I think surely that photo was staged, someone got their dad to cover their face in grease and pick up a rubber rat to take the photo.

Other times I've heard he was a vulnerable homeless man living in the urban decay of Greenock. But for 40 years? What do you guys think of this urban legend, was he a real scavenger who lived for decades on scraps? Or did he never exist?

I did look into it and it surprised me that apparently this dates back to the 70s/80s, with even a mention of a similar looking man in the 40s. So potentially an almost century old Scottish urban legend.

“Jobs could be lost as a result, and an occupational health expert said some had left the offshore industry rather than lose the weight”

And I suspect it’s a minority of a minority of people whose excess weight is owed to piled on muscle from the gym.
