Discussion GPT-6-Astra's tax return underpays the government

Post image

One of the demos of Astra's computer use abilities in their blog post (https://openai.com/index/gpt-6-astra/) has it fill out a Form 1040 for a relatively simple tax situation.

The problem is that it's wrong. For one, this is clearly not the f1040 PDF you get off the IRS website; it's a seemingly-AI-concocted HTML rendering of it with a completely different layout, hosted on a local web server. I doubt that the IRS would accept this if you printed it and mailed it in.

Second, almost everyone puts whole dollars in on their forms. That Astra chose otherwise is a bit unconventional. But there's an even more glaring problem - at a taxable income of $36700 you are obligated to pay $4169, not $4165.50 [in tax](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p17). Astra appears to have used the marginal tax rate formulas but the IRS requires you to use the tax table.

Straight to jail; claiming an extra $2.50 refund is a lot of money.

I am a big proponent of AI and I think it won't be long before it takes over most white-collar work. But it's hard to say that Astra is an AGI model if it doesn't do basic validation of its output.

Question Astra for chat for Plus users

Does anyone have a little bit more information? Will Plus users like me get access to Astra in regular chat, or will it only be available for us in Work and Codex? Right now, I'm seeing conflicting information.

Discussion GPT-6 Astra's pricing is 2.5x GPT-5.6 Sol’s current prices across the board, up from $4/$20 to $10/$50 per million input/output tokens, with the same 90% discount for cache reads and 25% premium for cache writes.

I had a wrong hope!

It seems that users will never benefit from optimized pricing, while AI models and their processing methods become more optimized.

Despite increasing revenue and user numbers(paid subscriptions), we are always seeing the price of models that cost less to suppliers increase:

Discussion Just noticed the GPT-6 Pro limit on the $100 plan

I was pretty excited for Astra until I actually read the fine print.

On the $100 Pro plan, you only get 50 GPT-6 Pro messages a week and 200 for the $200 plan. That’s basically 7 a day, and apparently the allowance is shared with Sol Pro too.

Maybe that’s enough for some people, but for $100 a month I expected a lot more access to the flagship model.

Am I the only one who thinks that’s pretty weak?

Question Any early impressions of GPT-6 Astra for creative writing specifically ?

I use ChatGPT almost entirely for creative writing, and everything in the launch material is computer use, agentic coding and cyber capabilities. Nothing about prose.

If you've had access, I'm curious about the usual failure points rather than benchmarks: does it still collapse into the same rhythms over a long piece, does it hold a character voice across a long context, does it push back on a weak idea or just execute it. Also whether the reasoning effort settings change anything for writing, since those are presumably tuned for other tasks.

Discussion GPT-6 Astra vs Claude Fable 5.1 based on the benchmarks available so far

Thumbnail

I collected the public benchmark results I could find for GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1 and put them side by side.

So far the picture looks fairly mixed.

GPT-6 Astra leads on several published coding, science and agent benchmarks, including Terminal-Bench and DeepSWE, while Fable 5.1 still performs better on some independent evaluations.

For example, Artificial Analysis currently gives Fable 5.1 a higher Intelligence Index and Coding Agent Index, although the coding-agent comparison also depends on the surrounding harness, so it isn't a pure model-to-model test.

Another interesting point is that both models have the same headline API pricing at $10/M input and $50/M output, although caching and long-context pricing differ.

I don't think there is enough independent data yet to say one is clearly better overall, but the current results make for an interesting comparison.

I collected the numbers here:
https://llmlearner.com/compare/gpt-6-astra-vs-claude-fable-5-1

Would be interested to see more real-world comparisons from people who have used both.

Discussion I want the advanced model picker back

As the Title says I want the old advanced model picker. It frustrates me that they change the UI every week.
