My boyfriend keeps saying “In the name of the Primarch, open the gate!” whenever I take too long in the bathroom. What is he referencing?

He keeps laughing, and all I can find online are some video games.

Why do “gifted children” often end up as being average or unimpressive as adults?

1.5k Upvotes

Not trying to be rude, just an observation I’ve noticed occasionally in my personal life. Obviously this isn’t true of every gifted child when they become adults…

Is there any way to definitively prove the source of a detonated nuclear weapon?

Is there an unspoken rule about situational awareness that people simply just aren't taught anymore?

As someone relatively new to adult life, I notice a lot of people doing things like stopping dead in the center of busy doorways, playing loud videos on speaker in waiting rooms, or crowding onto elevators before anyone exits.

Did something shift in how basic social etiquette is taught, or has public awareness always been this hit-or-miss and it’s just more noticeable now?

Should parents get to decide what period products their children are allowed to use?

Asking because I was recently told that it was a parent's choice, not the teenager going through their period, and I just can't believe that's the general consensus.

It's their body, they get to decide what they are comfortable using IMO.

Edit just to clarify: it was a teenage girl. She had bought it herself tampons and her mother told her she wasn't allowed to use them.

Why do some guys seem to really like when their gf swallows?

I’m 23F and have a bf, and this is something I’ve noticed and I’ve always wondered why. Is it mainly the physical aspect, or is there more of a psychological component to it like feeling desired, intimacy, or something different? I’m genuinely curious what guys think makes it so appealing.

Why do African Americans try to claim Morocco and Egypt so much ?

As a Moroccan living in Morocco this facet of american groups and ideologies like NOI confuses me the most.

The triangular trade was mostly between west africa and the americas, so why try to claim Morocco and Egypt as Black ?

Genetic studies have proven that modern day egyptians and moroccans are the closest genetic matches to their respective ancient population, and yet a lot of Black Americans try to act like Amazigh, Coptic and Culturally Arabized North Africans are "not indigenous" to their lands and that they were somehow black before a few centuries ago.

Why this obsession with the "We were the true North Africans" narrative

How does the average New Yorker survive in New York?

I've travelled to New York a few times, but I do not understand how the average person, making median salary can survive in New York.

I love New York, but I have always found it extremely expensive. Recently I googled the median income of New York. $81,228 for median household income.

How can a family possibly survive on $81,228 in New York? How can you have any savings? Everything is so exorbitant here. But somehow everyone on the streets look like they've got nice clothes and they've got their shit together.

Does everyone have parents' money or something?

Edit: Thanks all for the replies. I'm reading all and appreciate all the perspectives.

How long can the cost of things keep going up without wages increasing with it

Realistically? I feel like since 2021 I’ve been saying “can’t be like this forever!” But here I am 5 years later struggling horrendously. The same job I had 10 years ago, was very comfortable financially, isn’t cutting it anymore. How long can the cost of groceries and living keep increasing without wages increasing also? I keep hearing “supply and demand just stop buying it”, but there’s certain things we quite literally can’t just not buy (rent, food ((local farmers market and co-op are two times more expensive)), gas, etc.)

Did teenagers used to have so much acne?

It seems like whenever I see old photos of teenagers, I hardly ever see acne on them, but it’s extremely common for teenagers now to have acne. Was it less common or just less photographed?

Where’s my 8 hours?

I work 8 hours, sleep 8 hours (sometimes 7) so I should still have 8 hours left in the day. So why does it feel like I have an hour before work and an hour after work before I have to go to sleep. I get an hour lunch so that’s one. The math ain’t mathin????

ETA - I work 9-6. Lunch from 12-1. In bed by 8-9 usually cause I’m exhausted but not actually asleep until like 10 or 11. I have no kids. But a very active dog and a house to take care of. My work is about a 3 minute drive

How do I not be jealous with other guys?

Hi 18M

I just started college and something has been bothering me.

I’m no where near as attractive as most guys here.

I walked into the shared floor bathroom and I see all the guys getting ready for the day. Some of them have shirts on some of them not. The guys without shirts have no fat and are clearly muscular. And the guys with shirts clearly work out and almost everybody is taller than me.

They have well done hair and everything. I left the bathroom and had a bit of a breakdown in my dorm room (my roommate had already gone to class). Im just at a loss of what to do.

It wasn’t that bad in Highschool because nobody was just walking around shirtless. Some of these guys are juniors and seniors but a vast majority of my floor is freshman like me.

I knew I wasn’t all that attractive but this has made me realize just how unattractive physically I am. I am blessed and cursed with being a late bloomer my Dad didn’t fully mature until senior year of college.

It still doesn’t make me feel any better when I haven’t had a girlfriend before. I’ve always blamed my looks and I know I’m below average, not hideous but still not very good.

I then went to the gym to try and get my anger out and it worked a bit. The gym is still something that I have only just started so I got strained about an hour in. I know that I will have difficulty building muscle but I am still going to work and get myself more fit.

I’m just so fucking jealous of all of the guys at my school. They are almost always more attractive than me and it makes me even more angry at myself with how angry I’m getting at others.

I’ve always been told that most women prioritize personality over looks and personality is something that I know I am strong in and have hobbies and friends and respect everyone I come into contact with. But I’ve been more distrusting of this notion as I see not just myself but good friends as well.

I am not fat but not skinny either. Just a little bit of body fat on my stomach but that’s about it.

How can I try and not get so angry about this?

That's not my name?

So, we bought our home in 2003 and for the longest time I didn't know any of my neighbors. The people across the street moved in in 2006. I didn't have any interaction with them until 2018. I don't remember exactly how we crossed paths but we did, I introduced myself, and I must have mumbled or otherwise been unclear because he called me Jared. That's not my name. At the time I didn't correct him because honestly I thought, "this is the first time talking to them in 12 years and it'll probably be another 12 before I talk to them again".

As it turns out, I ended up becoming quite good friends with them, and they're still calling me Jared. It's now been 8 years and part of me feels like by them not knowing my actual name that I'm sort of in a way lying to them. However, I also don't want to be like, "hey so I know I had ample opportunities to correct you over the last many years and I didn't but my name is actually ...." and maybe ruining the friendship. I don't know.

Should I tell them Jared isn't my name? Or should I continue being who they've known me as for the better part of a decade and take the secret of my real name to the grave?

How Did Ayn Rand Bcome So Popular in the US?

I've never read her work, but I've read about it, and I get the impression that her "philosophy" is a half-baked, barely coherent justification for self-absorption and narcissism, along with a worship of industrialisation and the rich. It barely got any traction outside of the US, yet within the US it slowly acquired a following, even though most of her contemporaries thought she was bonkers. What makes the US so unusual that her work would become mainstream there, yet not anywhere else?
