META The Biggest Threat to This Community Is Fear

We understand why AI is a sensitive subject for artists right now. It's disrupting the art world in ways that make the future uncertain, and those concerns are real and valid. But something has gone wrong in how our community is responding to that fear, and we need to talk about it.

We don't have an epidemic of AI content in this sub. We have an epidemic of false accusations.

For every piece of AI-generated content we remove, we see around 10 accusations. They're usually directed at:

  • New artists making common beginner mistakes
  • Creative artists who made unique stylistic choices
  • Dedicated artists who put in more work than some people expect a human to be capable of

The art community has become so paranoid that anything that stands out is treated as evidence of cheating. This is not protecting human artists. This is the threat to human artists.

For a new artist sharing their first work, or any artist struggling with anxiety, being dogpiled with accusations causes real trauma that can drive them away from the community. We personally know artists who have stopped posting their work online because of this. If that's the outcome of your "AI policing," you aren't protecting the art community. You're destroying it.

We will always prioritize creating a safe, inclusive space for human artists. If your goal is to punish people for using tools you disapprove of, this is the wrong community for you. If your goal here is to celebrate and support human 3D art, you're in the right place – that's our goal too.

TL;DR

▶ Think something is AI-generated? Report it and move on.
▶ Accusations are considered personal attacks due to the current climate.
▶ AI-generated content will be removed, but AI-assisted work by a human artist is allowed.
▶ Include your wireframe and workflow when you post art.

Read on below for the details.

Where we stand on accusations.

Rule 2 – Be Constructive & Respectful – doesn't have a footnote saying "except for people you suspect of using AI." It means everyone, always, no exceptions. In the current climate, when you publicly accuse someone of using AI, you are painting a target on them. You are calling in the mob. That makes it a personal attack, full stop.

We became mods because we want to protect this community. When we see someone being attacked, our instinct is to protect them – and the more aggressively you come at them, the stronger that instinct becomes.

We understand the community's fears, and sometimes that's meant being more lenient on AI-related harassment than we would be on other kinds. What that patience has taught us is that warnings don't work: People looking to take out their fear on others will keep doing it for as long as they can get away with it. So going forward, AI-related harassment will be handled exactly the same as any other harassment: First offense – warning. Second offense – temporary ban. Third offense – permanent ban.

If you think something might be AI-generated: Report it and move on. That is your entire job. The mods have investigative tools regular users don't, and we take every report seriously. What you should not do is throw accusations in the comments. The odds are roughly 9-to-1 that you're wrong, and either way, publicly attacking a community member is never the right move.

What we're doing about AI.

We personally review most posts, and investigate every report. Blatant AI images get removed on sight, often before the community even sees them, but some cases require more investigation.

We also encourage all art posts to include a wireframe and a brief description of the artist's software and workflow. This deters most AI content, but it’s not just a "prove you're human" gate. The added context helps others learn from your process and it's the kind of healthy engagement that adds real value for everyone. Most artists love talking about their work, so a friendly question about someone's workflow is always welcome.

We're currently looking into the best ways to help wireframes & context become the norm around here. We'll be making some changes to address that soon.

Our policy on AI.

This is covered by the full rules, but they're long and formal, so here it is distilled into simple terms.

AI-generated = Off-topic. If the primary creative contribution came from an AI prompt rather than your own skills as a 3D artist, it does not belong here and will be removed.

AI-assisted = Allowed. AI tools are already embedded in software throughout our industry – Cascadeur's animation tools, Photoshop's generative fill, Rokoko's motion capture – and that's only going to continue. If you're a 3D artist who used AI tools somewhere in your workflow, that's fine. Just make it clear what you contributed with your own skills.

General AI discussion = Off-topic. AI opinions, debates, news, prompting tutorials, etc. will be removed. This is a 3D modeling community, not an AI community.

Questions & Discussion Wireframe Wednesday

Share a wireframe you've worked on this week.

What were you going for? What tradeoffs did you end up making in the process, and are you happy with the result? If something's still bugging you or you have a question about your topology, let the community know. Someone else has probably run into the same issue.

Top-level comments should include a wireframe.

I started learning 3D modeling about a month ago. I mostly make low-poly characters from games and anime that I like.

Here are some of the characters I’ve made so far. I’m still learning and getting more familiar with Blender.

I’ve also been posting my models on X throughout this month.

What do you think of my first 3D works?

This post is an art help & critique.

So I've accidentally uploaded them in the wrong order, from latest to oldest, but I just wanted advice on how I'm doing as a newbie 3d modelling. I'm an artist mainly but I decided to pick it up because I've had the thought of starting before. Im using nomad sculpt on my phone. The first one I did, the na'vi, was 3 days ago on Tuesday. (3 am Friday as of writing this now). The girl I made on Wednesday and Thursday I made the guy. I think I've done pretty well using what skills I have in art and trying to translate that into 3d.

Yes, I'm aware they're a bit ugly, but I've only just, started, so what can you do about it?

Art Showcase This dagger was my third-ever hand-painted 3D project.

The dagger was modeled in Blender, painted in 3DCoat + Photoshop, and based on a concept by the mighty Baldi Konijn. No AI used.

I made this dagger to really solidify my new workflow. The model looked pretty simple from a modeling perspective, but it turned out there was actually quite a bit to figure out. You've probably seen this concept modeled by a lot of different artists already (and maybe you've even seen my version before xD).

This project became something new for me, but in a completely different way.

I don't really care about likes on ArtStation that much (only in case it helps a project stay on the main page for as long as possible and maybe get noticed by an art lead looking for an artist for their team xD), but this one really blew up. I made it relatively quickly, and it got about twice as many likes as my most popular project ever. It also completely outperformed all the illustrations I'd spent tons of time and effort on, carefully thinking through every detail.

After these two weapons (this dagger and the axe from my previous post) some really cool artists from studios where I'd love to work started following me. And that was very strange, at the time, besides looking for a fulltime illustration job, I was also trying to make it as a commission artist. That meant putting a lot of effort into social media and visibility. And despite all that effort, I never managed to get a stable stream of commissions. With 3d, I wasn't even trying to do anything special. I considered these my first learning projects, and didn't really think they had much artistic value beyond that.

And of course, I had a ton of fun working on this dagger.

This was also the point when I realized that I'd really, truly moved on from 2d illustration to 3d. It wasn't just me trying something new anymore.

Questions & Discussion How do I find work as a 3D modeller with no higher education and very low income?

I’m a 21 year old 3D artist that makes dinosaurs in Nomad Sculpt. I’m under alot of stress from struggling with finding work and battling depression. I would love to work for a toy, model, game or film making company but I have little faith in myself from a lack of education and underdeveloped social skills. I could use some advice and hope.

After sharing my Night Fury and getting such an amazing response, quite a few people asked if I could make a Light Fury as well.
So… here she is! 😄
Really happy with how she turned out. What do you guys think?
And of course, I’d love to see your prints if anyone decides to make her!

Hello! Here is a Tulip Lamp (design by Tiffany Studios in 1910) I made recently during the "Back in Time" challenge by Sierra Division. It was a lot of fun, took the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and learn sculpting. Texturing the stained glass was also a very interesting task to solve. You can see more renders and a turntable on my artstation: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/o0bX1z

I was inspired by Michał Sałata's concept art for fantasy weapon concepts and decided to make this stylized Seahorse Axe.

It was a fun model to work on, I learned a lot throughout the process! This was also my first time hand-painting textures, and I'm happy with how it turned out! Hope you like it as well!

Art Showcase A forest cabin on a forgotten clearing

Thumbnail

A while ago, I posted one of the early drafts of this project. I’ve spent some more time polishing it, and here’s the final result. It’s definitely missing a process breakdown, but I thought about it too late. I’ll make sure to include one in my next work — or more precisely, learn how to do it.

Thanks for checking it out!

Trees & Bark: Procedurally modeled the trees in SpeedTree, then baked and textured the bark maps in Substance Painter. Scene Optimization: To keep the viewport smooth and prevent Arnold from crashing during render, I converted all trees and moss clusters into Arnold .ass proxies.

Scattering: Used Maya MASH for all vegetation distribution and roof shingle placement.

Lighting & Atmosphere: Set up the volumetric fog using native Maya and Arnold tools (aiAtmosphereVolume and Fluids).

Rendering & Trade-offs: Rendered in Arnold. Due to hardware limitations, I had to rely heavily on the OIDN denoiser, which left some areas a bit overly smooth/soft unfortunately, the only viable compromise for my setup right now.

Texturing & Post-Processing: Decided to skip a full texturing pass on the cabin itself to keep the focus purely on shape, light, and atmosphere. Did final color grading and minor polish in Photoshop.

Art Help & Critique How are complex hard-surface models like this actually made?

Post image
687 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m a 3D generalist, but I wouldn’t consider myself a particularly strong or specialized modeler.
I’ve always been curious about how experienced hard-surface artists create extremely complex mechanical models like the one in the image. When I look at the wireframe, there are so many interconnected panels, mechanical parts, grooves, bolts, layered surfaces, and small details that it’s difficult for me to imagine modeling everything manually piece by piece.
So I’d love to understand what the actual professional workflow looks like.
Is most of this really modeled manually with traditional techniques like subdivision, booleans, bevels, and topology cleanup? Or do artists rely heavily on add-ons, procedural tools, kitbash libraries, Geometry Nodes, Maya and blender workflows, or reusable parts?
For a model at this level of complexity, how much is actually built from scratch?
I’m also curious about how artists manage the topology and keep the process efficient without spending an insane amount of time on every small mechanical detail.
If anyone could explain the typical workflow, or recommend some tutorials/artists who show the complete process of building this kind of complex sci-fi/mechanical model, I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks!

Art Help & Critique Good way to model this style of forearm in 3D? (Blender and/or Blockbench)

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I'm working on the arms and hands on a model, and I'm aiming for this kind of style where the forearm widens at the wrist instead of narrowing, as shown with the references in the first image.

Thing is, I can't figure out how it should look in 3D without the hands looking odd, the fingers being too big to accommodate that, or the whole thing just turning into Popeye's arms; the model in the second and third pics is an earlier attempt at the hand.

Any advice or examples for how to do this decently?
