Welcome to the weekly build help thread! This is the place to ask for advice, recommendations, and help with your Plex server builds and setups.

What to Post Here

  • Build advice requests - "What hardware should I use for transcoding 4K?"
  • Hardware recommendations - "Best CPU for a Plex server under $500?"
  • Component compatibility - "Will this GPU work with my motherboard?"
  • Hardware upgrades - "Should I upgrade my CPU or add more RAM?"
  • Build planning - "Planning a new server, what specs do I need?"
  • Hardware comparisons - "Intel vs AMD for Plex transcoding?"

Before Posting

Please include relevant details such as:

  • Your budget
  • Current hardware (if upgrading)

[LabB0T] Monthly Projects Megathread — September 2026

16 Upvotes

Monthly Projects Megathread — September 2026

There has been an influx of people wanting to share their projects and we have recently decided to disallow such posts on the subreddit as the vast majority of it is vibe coded slop, however, we continue to be inundated with these requests, and some of these are somewhat legit, so here we are.

This thread is for people to share 'their' projects, apps, scripts or anything else Plex related.

You may only post your project here once per month, and you may only post one project.

Rules

  1. Declare AI use - if you used AI or AI assistance (ChatGPT, Copilot, Cursor, Claude, etc.) at any point during development, you must state this clearly, as per the template below. Failure to disclose will result in removal and a ban from the subreddit.
  2. Be detailed - vague "I made a thing, here's a link" posts will be removed. Tell us what it does, why you built it, how it works, and any relevant technical details.
  3. Include all relevant links - GitHub/source, documentation, releases, demo videos, screenshots, etc. If it's closed source, explain why.
  4. It must be Plex related - tools, scripts, apps, integrations, configs, hardware setups, anything directly tied to your Plex experience.

Tips for a Good Post

  • Describe the problem you were solving, not just what you built
  • Include screenshots, config snippets, or a short demo if possible
  • Share what worked, what didn't, and what you'd do differently
  • Mention the tech stack / language / dependencies
  • If it's a script or tool, show a sample of the output or usage

Example Post Format

``` Project: [Name] — [one-line description]
What it does: A few sentences describing what the project does and the problem it solves.
AI Disclosure: If you used AI, explain how you used it, and how much AI was used, where, what tools etc.
If you did not use AI, state this clearly.
Technical Overview: Brief technical overview - language, how it integrates with Plex, any dependencies, etc.
Links: - Source: https://github.com/... - Docs / README: https://... - Release / Download: https://... - Screenshots / Demo: https://... ```
Help Uhmm... Should I be worried? Especially after the recent vulnerabilities.
Post image
I've checked the versions of both the server and Windows app, they are up-to-date...
All those "phishing attempts" are also "Accessed by: plex media server.exe".
I'm a bit worried, since it seems that plex media server itself tries to contact those ip addresses. So it's an outgoing connection, not incoming, as I understand it...
The "phishing attempts" started about 24 hours ago. My server is not set to port :80. The antivirus is BitDefender free.
Should be worried?
Edit: some ip addresses from the these BitDefender logs, basically the same thing "Accessed by: plex media server.exe": 102.220.160.39:80 , 102.220.160.124:80/ ,130.12.181.21:80
Edit2: I found this in the logs (not sure what it means, though):
Sep 03, 2026 22:22:31.000 [72196] DEBUG - Request: [130.12.182.225:34210 (WAN)] SSH-2.0-libssh_0.12.0 (3 live) #e0ba Signed-in
I noticed similar requests for TLS and GZIP instead of SSH/libssh, and what I find noticable is that it starts after [NSB/SSDP] SSDP arrived, and ends with [NSB/SSDP] SSDP departed (and SSDP is the device name of my Android TV with Plex).
News Plexamp v4.50.7-beta.4 Released
27 Upvotes
Plexamp Desktop v4.50.7-beta.4
Everything in the 4.50.7 beta cycle so far, since 4.50.6.
  • A changed downloaded playlist no longer leaves Downloads stuck refreshing when all of its tracks are already present.
  • Windows on ARM: Plexamp no longer reports that it can’t create a log file every time it starts.
  • Opening an album whose details don’t load no longer crashes the app.
  • Downloading a single track, or any selection of tracks, now works instead of sticking on Preparing.
  • A downloaded smart playlist now drops tracks that stop matching it.
  • A download you start while downloads are paused is no longer lost, and begins on its own once they resume.
  • Downloads being prepared show how far along they are, instead of spinning with no indication.
  • A download that can’t start says why, rather than sitting on Preparing.
  • The Downloads badge counts each unfinished track once, including artwork and metadata repair work.
  • Starting a download during the launch refresh no longer interrupts it, and routine refreshes no longer scan every track file.
  • Smart playlists retain every download through partial, interrupted, and rapid refreshes while still removing tracks the server confirms are gone.
  • Windows: album art now reaches the system now-playing panel, and the apps that read it, like taskbar widgets.
  • Windows: the taskbar icon is drawn from the full-resolution artwork instead of a scaled-up 16px one.
  • Desktop: an error no longer replaces Plexamp with a page of raw error text.
  • A download interrupted by the launch refresh no longer shows more tracks remaining than it has left.
Solved Updated my Synology Plex Server, I need some advice for saving it
10 Upvotes
I got the update email and it led to me updating my Synology DSM from a 6.x version to 7.2. I then manually ran the package update for Plex 1.43. In the process, it created a new server with the same name as my old one, and abandoned the old one (it doesn't respond in client software, of course). After doing some digging, it turns out that the update created a new volume (PlexMediaServer) but left the old volume with all my metadata (Plex) alone.
The question is, can I safely move all my metadata over (or delete the new volume and just rename the old volume to the new name)? Or am I going to have to start from scratch?
Thanks for the advice, and thanks to Plex for putting me in this position. Ugh. This is exactly why I wouldn't touch my old setup, and now my "wildest dreams" have come true.
EDIT: Not solved, but marked solved because I now need to wade into a very long post on Plex's forums about DSM 6.0 > 7.0 and I'll leave y'all alone
EDIT: Solved. Turns out the new manual update to 1.43 did not handle migration from DSM 6 > 7. I had to delete the new volume and uninstall PMS, then install an earlier version from inside DSM using Plex’s migration steps, then finally update to 1.43. Whew. Thanks to all who chimed in to help.
Solved Plex User Has Some Admin Rights
38 Upvotes
Plex Pass on my server. Child was using my account and their own profile. Now they're off to university so I removed their profile and set them up with a separate Plex account and granted it library access.
They're using a new laptop with the Windows Plex app. Never signed in with my credentials there. When logged in they mostly appear to be a normal user and don't have access to server settings etc. But bizarrely they do have the 'Manage Library Access' setting and can grant access to others and have the ability to remove my own account! They can't see the other two users I've added though.
The old profile and new account don't share anything other than a first name so I don't understand how Plex has allowed them to have user access privileges. There doesn't seem to be any fine-grained admin rights that could allow this either.
Any ideas what's going on here?
Help “No Content” displaying on remote relative’s TV
7 Upvotes
My father is in a care home 120 miles from me, so I am trying to figure this out at a distance. Quite often when he opens Plex it gives him the No Content message. Everything else on his Roku TV is working, so I know he has internet still. I’ve also had one other friend tell me she has seen this happen and all while the other three people (myself included) never see it.
My father is the priority as he is 79 and has very mild delirium, so walking him through fixes is difficult, but possible. Sadly I only see him every other week and, of course, I was just there three days ago.
Does anyone have any idea where I even begin with this? That’s my biggest problem is I don’t even know where to begin troubleshooting this when I know his internet is working and my server is definitely running.
Thanks in advance
Help Plex issues lately with content
16 Upvotes
So I've used plex for 8 years no major issues but in the past few days I've had issues with it booting but saying no content available. Any ideas? I'm already about to buy a new drive to store it all. Do you think it's the boot drive? Or could it just be the content drive? I'm on windows.
Solved ELI5 How to make my Plex server work?
3 Upvotes
SOLVED
Thank you everybody!
I contacted my internet providet to unlock all the ports (32400 was not selectable by default), assigned a static ip to the server and forwarded to it through the 32400 port.
Now everything works. My only doubt at this point is why mt tv, connected at the same wifi network, was not working.
I'll update the post if I'll ever find out.
Thank you again.
EDIT: first time crossposting something and missed the main text, thank you for pointing out. Here it is.
Hello everyone,
In the last three days I've tried, without much success, to set my Plex server.
It runs on a 10 years old Dell Precision Tower 3620 and Window 10.
I have activated a 2 weeks free trial of Remote Watch Pass.
In the image you can see the situation right now: I don't know how but without changing anything after a while remote acces changed from red to green, and the server status from orange to green.
The problem is now that it does not seems to work on my tv (lg smart tv) even when connected to the same wifi network (see attached image).
From my smartphone, when connected to the same wifi (Local connection), it works fine, but when I try to connect from 4g/5g the server library results offline.
My internet provider is Iliad and the router is a Iliadbox WiFi 7.
Please, explain it to me like I'm five, because apparently I'm not smart enough to follow youtube tutorials or Plex guides.
Thank you in advance!
Discussion Any reason why Plex won’t add a “workaround” for “Audio: Unknown”
0 Upvotes
As per title. I know that the marker for the media’s audio is encoded in the file itself. However, short of re-encoding many hundreds/thousands of files, some of us are stuck with “Audio Unknown” on countless items.
Why doesn’t Plex introduce a marker, as they use with subtitles, to bypass the audio marker when it is “Unknown”. E.g., adding .en to media files would show “English”, just as with subs.
Is there any reason why this shouldn’t be implemented? Or even if they don’t want to interfere with current naming schemes (for obvious reason), a field that can be filled when editing media item metadata if “Unknown” is currently present.
Help .avi suddenly jittery?
1 Upvotes
I have been watching my older .avi movies and series on plex with no issue until recently. Recently they are all a little (or a lot!) jittery! Was this an update? Is it a setting I messed up? Has anyone else had this issue.
These are series with 200+ episodes so I really dont want to use handbrake on them all manually unless I have to. Any help appreciated!
Help Plex down/issues signing in?
27 Upvotes
Is anyone else experience issues in the last hour? My Samsung TV signed me out of my Plex account and I can't sign back in. I'm getting the message "An unknown error has occurred" on the TV after trying to scan the QR code and log in using my phone. I also noticed on the Plex web app on my computer, my user profile photo is not displaying, which is usually the sign of an issue.
https://downdetector.com/status/plex/ is showing a big spike in issues starting a half hour ago, so I'm hoping it's not just me but I haven't seen anyone mention anything here (yet).
Discussion Do you know of any file renaming tools for Plex that can use non standard alternative orders from the TVDB?
15 Upvotes
Okay so I usually use filebot for my renaming.
As you can see, the show Money Heist has a Netflix order, which is how my files are arranged.
However, Filebot doesn't display that ordering on the tool. It only shows the standard orderings like Airdate, DVD, Absolute etc.
Help Plex Media Experience playing certain movies & tv shows at 60fps instead of 24?
My movies and certain TV shows are playing at 60fps instead of 24fps. Any reason why? I can't find a setting to change this. In the regular non testflight version of Plex, they play at their correct fps.
Help List vs instead of Thumbnails in folder view?
2 Upvotes
Hi,
I have some Training video files that I use Plex to play back. To view them, I set Plex to Folder View since they are organized into folders for each subject. This works great to navigate to the folder I want, but not so much once I get in there and need to pick the video.
It shows me each video with a giant thumbnail. I only get a couple words of each title so it's hard to figure out which one is which. Is there any way to change it to a List view and just not have the thumbnails at all? I don't see any option to do this on the screen so not sure if there's something on the Plex Server or anywhere else.
I'm using this on an Onn Streaming Google TV box thing if that matters.
Thanks
