All Hands on Deck: We're protesting the closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences Museum

Post image
447 Upvotes

Philly Science Action, Green Philly, and Skype a Scientist invite the people of Philadelphia to join us for a rally to hold Drexel University accountable for the closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences Museum.

RSVP for the protest here.

We are asking Drexel to find a way to keep the museum open to the public past September of 2026.

For almost 200 years, the Academy of Natural Sciences has been dedicated to understanding the natural world and inspiring everyone to care for it.

At a time when climate change and science continue to be under attack, Philadelphia cannot afford to lose another institution that connects people to the natural world. From initiatives like Plastic Free Philly to Academy Town Halls that bring people together to discuss climate challenges, along with exhibits that make science accessible to the public, the Academy plays a critical role in our city.

This is an institution Philadelphia can’t afford to lose.

Germantown Friends School and Zionism

This school claims to follow the Quaker values that were instrumental in its founding, yet one zionist staff member has hamstrung the entire admin board. Speaking out against the atrocities or showing for support for the Palestinian people gets you accused of anti antisemitism. This one staff is known for cornering people, harassing them, and being a general problem for staff that don't align with his beliefs. I'm not looking for a big call to action, mostly just venting because it hurts to watch this place reject its core values over something that Quakers would never support.

Nicole Fusaro — Missing From Philly Since 2018

Upvotes

Nicole Amanda “Nikki” Fusaro went missing in #Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in approximately July 2018.

I want to emphasize an important correction: the 2019 disappearance date listed in NamUs and repeated in other articles is incorrect. Nicole was already missing in 2018.

Nicole was approximately 26 years old when she disappeared. She was reportedly sighted in July 2018 in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood. Her last known legal paper trail ends in Philadelphia. She previously lived in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, and there are indications that she may also have had connections to Charlotte, North Carolina and Virginia.

Nicole is described as a Caucasian / white female who is about 5 feet 6 inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes. Her identifying tattoos include:

●A Playboy bunny on her left shoulder

●A Chinese symbol on the inside of one wrist

●An infinity symbol on the back of her neck

●A rose on her inner right ankle or lower shin

●An additional tattoo on her lower back

She has several piercings, including her nose, belly button, and both ears. She may also have an eyebrow piercing.

Nicole’s mother searched diligently for her until she passed away in 2020, never learning what happened to her daughter. Nicole’s father is also deceased. Her cousins, extended family, friends, and community members have continued trying to keep her story alive. Her cousin has been a driving force in the search for her.

I have researched her timeline, spoke with people connected to her, and advocated for her case.

If you saw Nicole in or after 2018, please alert the Philadelphia Police Department at 215-686-3243.

Please read and share my complete Underground Mysteries article:

Philly developers are planning a $1.5M campaign to protect City Council from progressive challengers — Philly For Growth, a super PAC backed by the city's development interests, wants to keep progressives from growing their power on City Council.

Good news day for job growth (Burlington HQ moving to Schuylkil Yards) and now this branch office of a local heavyweight.

About 100 good jobs coming to Curtis Center.

Wish they'd move the entire operation from Exton but baby steps 🚶‍♀️

Clubs to join to meet 30-something men?

I’m giving up on the dating apps to try to meet someone organically. I have a pretty robust social life, but I realized most of my hobbies are exclusively or majority women. Where are some good places to meet guys (preferably ones that are nice and can hold a conversation lol)

"Some days it don't even pay to get up"

...is what my drunk grandfather used to say. So far since I’ve gotten up today my toilet broke, my alarm broke, my mouse broke, my ceiling fan reset itself and now won't change from max-brightness cold light and the unopened 6-days-from-sell-by milk was already bad. I think some days fate is telling you “you know what, just go back to bed”.

Lemme know if anything else happens.

Ex-math major looking to do math for fun in Philly

I was a math major in college, graduated about 7 years ago, and have recently spent way too much time on calculus TikTok. It’s made me realize I really miss doing math.

I’m a data scientist by trade, so I already have a quantitative job and know/attend the data meetups Philly but I'm looking specifically for advanced/theoretical math meetups, clubs, lecture series on topics like calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, abstract algebra, real analysis, combinatorics. I don’t really want to enroll in (or pay for) a university class, but I do want the environment of learning math with other people by working through problems together, learning new concepts, etc. I found the Free Library Math Book Club and am planning to check that out.

Does anything like this exist in Philly for adults?

Nice, quiet places to spread some ashes

Lost two of my kitties a couple years ago and want to spread their ashes somewhere in private. Parks, gardens, churches, maybe even a valley. I would greatly appreciate some suggestions as to where I can do this, thank you

Trying to Find an Old Friend

Does anybody recognize this dear old friend of mine who stole my trash can from my property around 4PM today? I’m located in Tacony, right off of Frankford Ave. Will send a fresh baked loaf of banana bread to anyone with leads on tracking down my old pal.

(Vid of him strolling away with my trash can in the comments)

Lost pet resources?

About 3 weeks ago, I became homeless and I brought my cats to a friends place in South Philly to take care of them until I was able to get back on my feet. This “friend” reached out to me the day after I dropped them off and told me that both cats had ran out when they left the door open. I’ve been trying to find either of them since with no success. I’ve tried posting to Facebook groups and that hasn’t helped either. Are there any local organizations that can assist or keep an eye out for them? TIA.

Stolen scooter in Fishtown

I’m hoping someone might be able to help my friend’s son out. He has MS and doesn’t walk so relies heavily on his scooter to get him around. He even uses it to get his daughter to and from school. Last Saturday his scooter was stolen right from his backyard on E Dauphin Street. It’s pretty disheartening to think someone could be this heartless!

Scoop DeVille Offering Free Ice Cream For Speed Cameras

Maybe I’m being sensitive as a disabled person who advocates for safer streets, but this just feels like a horrible look, especially from a business like an ice cream shop. Even as a joke, It feels like a bad idea to tie something like that to your business account.
