The one time I sat on a jury my experience was the opposite of that. Pretty much as open a shut case as you can imagine (guy opened the door to some cops serving a warrant with a meth pipe sticking out of his shirt pocket) and we still spent a couple of hours discussing the case before we can to a verdict.

That seems reasonable, though. Like, you don't want to jump to snap decisions, you want to interrogate what you've heard and consider whether the evidence is reliable, you want to make sure everyone understands what they've heard, you want to consider anything that seems out of place or doesn't mesh with other information, and you want to make sure you get the whole day's payment and don't have to sit around waiting in case you're wanted for a different trial in the afternoon by finishing too soon.

At least where I've been called in once you actually serve on a jury they cut you loose as soon as the trial's over.

I've never served but my brother did when he was 19, he did three different trials over the course of the two weeks he served. None of them especially serious or harrowing, and all complete fairly quickly, but he wasn't a one-and-done thing.
