A few years ago I was at a convention and met some voice actors.

For anyone who ever watched Yu-Gi-Oh, I met the dude who voices Yugi (granted I met several others but he is the one relevant to the story). Spoke with him for like 5-10 min, and when the topic came up about weird fan meeting experiences, he said the weirdest thing is that some people genuinely cannot seem to comprehend that he is an actor, and not the actual character within the show.

Like they'll approach and ask him questions like he is the writer, or worse like he himself IS Yugi. It was a bizarre hearing this from him, as I'd understand that behavior from a child, but not grown adults. And from how he described it, it didn't seem like a one off thing either.

I remember soap opera stars talking about how they'd get hate mail for the shit their character did on the show.

Meanwhile I'm pretty sure if I ever saw some actors I'd be like "Wow you were amazing in X, I hated your character so much, you were wonderful." Or not, because I am not the kind to go up and talk to an actor.

There's and episode of Friends where the character Joey (who is an actor on a soap opera) meets a stalker fan who 1000% think he is the character he plays on the soap opera.

Crazy to think that actually happens and isn't just a sitcom subplot for laughs.

I know there are some actors who have had a certain sway on the story or arc of their character, more common in live action movies and shows though.

Like Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford famously workshopped lines in Star Wars. Carrie herself was a script doctor too.

And actors also try to get in the head of their characters, that's part of acting in general.

But yeah, a dub is a different beast, and then even considering that the actor is actually the character in any true sense of the word is another level entirely.

IIRC, for a number of years, she was the script doctor. If you were having problems, she's who you'd want to bring it to.

She was involved in Hook, which has generally poor reviews because people are stupid and wrong.

Look at how some people get really into something like an info graphic of spaceship size comparisons... like seriously in awe of how big a made up ship is compared to some other made up ship... not too surprising.

I wonder how much is an intelligence thing, and how much is an extreme emotion thing, due to the obsession/idolism....

(Dumber people struggle with "multiple interpretations of the same thing." Whether it's trouble with hypothetical situations vs real situations, or figurative vs literal speech. I'd assume it's similar with the pretend person vs the actual person.)

I remember a video where Ewan McGregor (dressed as himself) was asked at a convention what his advice was for a young Jedi just starting out, and he said (somewhat harshly, admittedly) something like "Don't be ridiculous. I'm an actor."

Tbf a lot of actors who are the stars of their show do have a lot of sway over the way their character is written (and sometimes they direct or write episodes). So I understand questions like that.

People being that dumb isn't new though. The Coast Guard supposedly got letters and calls about why they weren't searching for the Gilligan's Island castaways...

Oh man, it's gotta be about three decades since I'd walk past my brother watching Yu-Gi-Oh so my memory is definitely spotty, but didn't he, like, visit other dimensions of something?

That is especially impressive considering he's a voice actor and probably looks nothing like Yugi, being three dimensional and all. It's more undestandable with people that actually look like the character they are portraying.

I remember I was real young and watching TV some sort of live action star wars E-wok special that premiered during the 80s and I was very sad that some of the characters died. My mother was very patient and explained as many times as it took about how fact and fiction are different and that the actors were fine. It took me a little bit because I was pretty young but I got it eventually. When I did I think my reaction was "okay but the EWOKS are still dead and I am sad. Though I was probably less sad knowing it wasn't real real.
