Looking for community input on rules

A user just DM’d me looking for clarifications regarding self-promotion and AI.

I have created rule 3 and updated rule 4, but I would like community input:

For self-promotion, I think the following things are most important to consider (including if there should be extra rules for such things):

  1. Non-softwar

e things such as blogs, newspapers, other online communities, etc.

  1. Non-gratis (ie paid) FOSSoftware
  2. Should promotion of songs/albums/etc. be allowed

As for considerations for content-generating AI (eg. LLMs, image generators, etc.):

  1. AI disclosure will be required.
  2. I have provisionally required that all AI-generated content be free of cost
  3. Should genAI be allowed at all?
  4. If so, are there any other requirements that should be added?

What DAW do you use?

Looking to add some flairs, you’ll also be able to edit so you can add a link to places you post music to

(Also if it’s not a DAW but something similar I’ll add that, you’ll see Audacity is an option)

Help regarding audio interfaces (Audient id4 mkii vs focusrite solo gen 4)

Upvotes

I've recently begun looking to upgrade my audio interface from behringer UMC22 to one of the two mentioned above (audient id4 mkii or focusrite solo gen 4), but I'm undecided. I use the input only for the guitar, and don't really use a microphone. I've heard that focusrite has better support for alsa, making it better but I'm not sure. Which one do I go for?

Nee resources that will help me understand Linux audio on mint.

Hi, I just want to record music why does it have to be so hard!

I am using ardour on mint and things were smooth until i started to get plugins guitarix and pipewire.

guitarix itself is a nightmare that works somehow when it wants to.

I am scared to test the drums / synth tools i got. I know i am to dumb to even try.

I heard something about audio stack, is there material i can consume to get me clued up, i am not very strong with computers but have done some tinkering. If there is anything youd recomend I read up on ? Youtubes 5year old tutorials are not helping.

An open-source, local-only, text-to-speech server for your PC that you interact with via your phone, tablet or anything with a browser (LAN only).

The app allows you to instantly synthesize anything you type or 1-click any pre-written words or phrases. Group them by profile, game, etc.

Built-in audio loopback - so you always know what went out.

Chromebook audio speaker issue on Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS

So recently I just installed ubuntu on my potato chromebook and I cant get the audio to play on the onboard speakers. The strange part is when I plug in my headphones into the 3.5 mm jack, audio works just fine. I’m more interested in getting both audio system working. (Havent tried to plug in a usb speaker yet).

The laptop in mention - The Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2-in-1 (7486)

Some of the things I tried

- Install new ubuntu version on the chromebook
- use WeirdTreeThing Chromebook linux audio script on github.
- checking alsamixer if my speakers are muted (no auto mute option on alsamixer for some reasons)

Open to suggestions!

Edit: I have pipe wire at the moment!

Linux guide: Update FiiO K13 R2R XMOS firmware V1.15 to V1.17

Hi everyone,

I successfully updated my FiiO K13 R2R XMOS firmware from V1.15 to V1.17 entirely from Linux Mint, without using Windows or macOS.

The K13 exposes an XMOS DFU interface under Linux, but the standard XMOS loader did not initially switch the device from Runtime mode into DFU mode. A small compatibility change using the older XMOS RESETINTODFU and RESETFROMDFU requests allowed me to:

  • Confirm the installed XMOS firmware
  • Enter genuine DFU mode
  • Make a read-only backup of V1.15
  • Install FiiO’s official V1.17 firmware
  • Verify the completed update as ver=0117

I documented the complete procedure, commands, firmware checksum, safety checks, backup step, and troubleshooting here:

https://github.com/Soothsayer86/fiio-k13-r2r-linux-xmos-update

Tested configuration:

  • FiiO K13 R2R
  • USB VID:PID 2972:0120
  • Linux Mint 22.3
  • XMOS V1.15 upgraded to V1.17
  • XMOS xmosdfu V2.1.0

This is a community-tested procedure and applies only to the K13 R2R XMOS firmware. It does not update the MCU or Bluetooth firmware.

I built a local-first music player because I wanted my music library to stay mine

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've been working on a desktop music player called Playnck.

The main idea is pretty simple: your music stays as normal files on your computer. There is no account, subscription, cloud library, or mandatory import process.

What I ended up building around that idea is quite a bit more than just a player:

  • Plays MP3, FLAC, WAV, OGG, M4A/AAC, Opus and WebA
  • Songs, albums and artist browsing
  • Playlists with folders that can be nested to any depth
  • Favorites and listening history
  • 10-band equalizer with presets
  • Gapless-style crossfade
  • Synced lyrics with manual timing adjustment
  • Automatic track identification using AcoustID or MusicBrainz
  • Metadata and cover-art editing that writes back to the actual audio file
  • Batch conversion to MP3, AAC, Opus, FLAC, ALAC and WAV
  • Multiple themes and accent colors
  • English and French interfaces
  • Windows and Linux support

One thing I particularly wanted to get right was metadata.

If I correct the artist, title, album or cover, I don't want that information trapped inside the application's database. The change should actually be written to the music file so another player can see it too.

The project is still evolving, and I'm mainly interested in feedback from people who manage their own local music collections.

What would you consider essential in a desktop music player that isn't already here?

TR-8S Studio: open source (MIT) web studio for the Roland TR-8S on Linux. Reverse engineered SysEx over ALSA raw MIDI, live follow, and a chat assistant. Built largely with Claude Code, declared up front

Self-promotion, and AI disclosure first because rule 4: most of the code was written with Claude Code over a handful of sessions, with me at the machine testing every claim against the real hardware. It is FOSS, MIT, source and everything free, nothing to buy or sign up for. If that disqualifies it here, fair enough, remove it.

What it is: a web studio for the Roland TR-8S drum machine on Linux. Plain Python over ALSA raw MIDI (/dev/snd/midiC*D*), no daemon, no JACK dependency, no build step for the UI. The TR-8S SysEx was undocumented, so it's reverse engineered and written down in the repo with every claim marked verified or not, against firmware 2.51.

It mirrors the machine live: pattern follow through Program Change, variation recognised from the notes it plays, steps lit as they sound, knob moves synced through CC. Edit a step in the browser and the machine has it before the bar ends. Melodies are written through Coarse Tune motion with note names. Every melodic tone was measured for its real root pitch, decay and brightness, so sounds are picked from data.

The chat runs on the Claude Agent SDK with the studio's tools served in-process as an MCP server, on your own Claude subscription or an API key. It builds or changes a groove when you ask in plain words. The screenshot is the grid view while a track it made is playing.

The bit I care about is turning it into a tutor for learning a drum machine, and that part is unbuilt. 465 tests run without the hardware. Three kids and one wife between me and a second job, so it's up for grabs.

Is there a maintained fork of UltimateVocalRemover for Linux?

For those unaware, this tools allows for splitting audio tracks into various stems using AI models, such as MDX-Net and HTDemucs.

On Windows, it may be installed through their automated installer program, where on macOS they provide an app package that just need be copied to the Applications folder.

On Linux, one must clone the repo, create a Python environment, install the packages in the requirements.txt file using pip, then launch the .py file.

Although it sounds simple, there are three main issues: 1. Some packages are no longer maintained / are broken, so you cannot install them through pip, such as playsound. Dora requires a package called 'sklern' which has been replaced by 'scikit-learn', and requires explicit overriding to install. 2. The program relies on Python 3.11 (according to their GitHub), which was not available for me on Debian repos and must be installed with pyenv. 3. Application does not scale properly, with buttons cut off and font way too big. Might be a bug with values reported by tkinter, or the fact it may not work on Wayland (I do not have X11 to test, but documentation makes no mention of this).

The repository with the pertinent instructions is found here: https://github.com/Anjok07/ultimatevocalremovergui#linux-installation-updated-inst

Even after an hour, I got it to run, but still not perfect, and the repo has not seen activity since 2023 (except the updated readme, but the code has not been updated).

I am thinking of forking this and fixing all the aforementioned bugs. Before I do though, does anyone know if there's already a fork that addresses these issues and provides better Linux support?

Really would like to avoid a Windows VM if I can help it, especially since I may not be in a position to do a GPU passthrough on KVM through my hardware.

Let me know what you guys think!

Steam videos no audio on Linux

I ran into a weird issue on Linux where Steam itself had audio, my system audio worked fine, games worked fine, but videos inside the Steam client, store trailers, previews, etc. had no sound.

 Restarting Steam didn’t fix it.

The cause ended up being that Steam’s embedded browser / webhelper was showing up in PipeWire/PulseAudio as “Chromium”, and that stream was muted.

 To check it:

 pactl list sink-inputs

 Look for something like:

 application.name = "Chromium"
 media.name = "Playback"
 Mute: yes

 Then unmute it:

 pactl set-sink-input-mute ID 0
 pactl set-sink-input-volume ID 100%

Replace ID with the sink input number, for example if you see:

 Sink Input #1800

 then:

 pactl set-sink-input-mute 1800 0
 pactl set-sink-input-volume 1800 100%

After that, Steam videos immediately had audio again.

So if Steam trailers/previews have no audio on Linux but everything else  works, check whether Chromium is muted in your audio mixer, it may  actually be Steam WebHelper.

Step by step the mixing process!

*Video Language is Greek

*The thumbnail was created partially using AI technology.

✏️To help all the Linux fans who want to get into music production—or are already producing—I've decided to translate all my videos on my YouTube channel into English, this process take time. Soon as possible all my videos in ENGLISH. so everyone can watch and understand them! YouTube’s automated translations aren't always accurate, so from now on, you can simply enable English subtitles. Happy music making, everyone!

In this guide, I show you the logic and technique behind mixing your own songs. The guide is based on the powerful and free DAW, Ardour, but the logic and implementation of the specific plugins you'll see to achieve your goal remain the same and can be applied to any DAW!

Another post about Keystation 49 Mk3 keyboard. Wanting to know how to make these buttons do something...

Post image
2 Upvotes

The stop, play and record buttons as well as the navigation buttons next to them. They send messages fine but it's received as notes, so I hear high music notes when I press them.

I want to use these buttons in Reaper or just anywhere, like maybe I can trigger a script that records current computer audio when I press the record button. Is there anything like that anywhere, any script I can write maybe?

Internet says I could monitor aseqdump and run something when specific buttons are pressed. Wondering if there's anything already available on Linux to configure what the buttons do. TIA

Bought M-Audio Keystation 49 Mk3. Very happy with it but having issue using soundfonts in Reaper

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm new to all of this so sorry if there's something I've misunderstood. I have a project which uses a soundfont with many different voices. With my previous keyboard I used to be able to hear what each voice sounded like when I scrolled through the list. But now it's stuck on the first voice, the basic piano. When I record new clips it is stuck on the piano voice.

I know there are probably drivers that I need to install but whether they're needed on Linux, I don't know. Hoping for someone to help me out here. Thanks in advance

I built a native Linux app for Nothing Ear / CMF earbuds

If you use Nothing or CMF earbuds on Linux, you probably know how limited the experience can be.
So I built **EarA-linux** — an open-source native Linux companion app for Nothing Ear and CMF earbuds.
It currently supports things like:
ANC / Transparency modes
Equalizer
Battery information
Gesture remapping
Find My
Low-latency mode
HFP support
Multiple Nothing / CMF earbud models
The project communicates directly with the earbuds and doesn’t require the official Nothing X application.

GitHub: [https://github.com/oneydef/EarA-linux\](https://github.com/oneydef/EarA-linux)

I’d really appreciate feedback, especially from people who actually use Nothing/CMF earbuds with Linux. I’m also looking for contributors who might want to help expand device support or improve the protocol implementation.

p.s its on dev release

Fedora KDE Plasma: Line6 UX2

Hey guys!

I'm having problems with my almost two decades old Line6 UX2. I'm a guitar player and just started playing again. Thought I'm getting back into it again before I buy better equipment.

My main problem is latency. I'm on fedora kde plasma (Ryzen 7 7800 X3D, MSI Mag Tomahawk B850, 32 GB Crucial CL36) using reaper, and everythings working fine so far. It's just that there seems to be an issue in the kernel driver. And there lot's of unintended behaviour ... sometimes the interface doesn't even connect properly, sometimes everything is working just right. Currently I'm on 44000/512 in reaper, and that causes a slightly disturbing delay. I am using PipeWire + WirePlumber + JACK setting in reaper. When I try using lower sample rates, clicking and sound artifacts appear.

I read in another sub that the driver seems to be really old and there seem to be lot's of problems with it. The UX2 supports 44 and 48 kHz natively, but the linux driver only operates the device reliably at 44 kHz and 16-bit. Anyone found a way to properly set up the UX2 using linux? I might just buy a focusrite scarlett or a different interface soon if I can't find a solution.

Btw: I tried different USB ports, different cables, 48 and 44 khz and different sample rates. No luck so far.

Thank you so much!

Nothing Earbuds on Linux — I made an open-source companion app

I’ve been working on EarA-linux, a native Linux application for controlling Nothing and CMF earbuds.
The goal is simple: bring the functionality you’d normally get from Nothing X to Linux.
Currently supported features include:
ANC / Transparency
EQ
Battery status
Custom gestures
Find My
Low Latency
HFP
Several Nothing / CMF models
It’s open source and I’m still actively developing it.

GitHub: https://github.com/oneydef/EarA-linux

If you own Nothing/CMF earbuds and use Linux, I’d love to know which model you have and whether it works for you. Link-to-dev
Feature requests, bug reports and contributions are very welcome.

Check my new VST player. Runs Windows and Linux VST all in once place!

Still testing it, but I thought I'd share this VST player . It runs Windows and Linux VSTs for Vst2 and 3 all in once place simply with no WINE dependencies!

I want to add Mac classic and OSX support, and get the MIDI solid but this is a good V1. It also runs pretty fast.

Any feedback is appreciated enjoy!
