News Subreddit changes and new moderation
Hi, I have recently become an additional mod for this subreddit. Firstly thanks u/scislac for approving me.
I've made a few small changes to start off with that I think are small enough to not cause any trouble/warrant community approval, though if there are comments about this please reach out.
- Images embedded into comments now enabled: Now you don't have to link externally to attach images. Hopefully this should make it much easier to solve help requests with visual info.
- Post flairs now enabled: For a while the pinned post from 10 years ago said to prefix help posts with [HELP]. A lot of the responses to this said that post flairs should be used instead, which I agree with. This has been superceded with post flairs which for now are mandatory (I think this isn't too intrusive but will consider any feedback). I've added a few categories, such as:
- Help - for all help requests
- Solved - for when a suitable solution has been found for a help request. Generally you wouldn't make a new post with this flair, but for changing a Help-flaired post afterwards when the OP no longer requires help.
- Showcase - For showcasing your finished work
- Tips & Tricks - Sharing knowledge and tutorials
- Meta - For community suggestions and stuff related to the subreddit; comments about the software; memes; catch-all for things that don't fit in the other categories
- News - Interesting news about inkscape; version releases, etc.
- Update to rule 4: I have included AI-generated responses as examples of possible low effort comments. They aren't specifically disallowed, but now it is the commenter's responsibility to ensure the accuracy and relevancy of the information. The response must directly address the help request, and must not contain incorrect or "hallucinated" information.
- u/litelinux and u/Xrott have also become moderators.
Please let me know if there are any issues regarding these changes or if you want anything else changed. I'll also consider revamping the look, for example adding a banner image. There will soon also be some optional user flairs available.

Help Need Help with Creating a Rope Pattern on Path
Hi! I'm new to using Inkscape but have some experience with other vector programs. My brother asked me to create a logo based on some images he had and he wants the lines of the logo to look like yarn, so I found some tutorials for creating a rope pattern on a path and have been following those.
I'm having an issue when getting to the end of the tutorial, however. The tutorial says that once you get the pattern spacing how you want it to then use Object To Path and then Break Apart, then set the fill color and stroke and the inside overlaps will be covered.
I've tried this about six times and the overlaps are NEVER covered. I've made sure my fill color is at 100% opacity. This logo overall is going to be very complex with lots of overlapping bits so if I have to go in and edit nodes for every overlap to hide them I may actually throw my computer out the window. Can anyone give me some insight on what I'm doing wrong?
Third image is part of a mockup of the logo in Clip Studio Paint, which would be fine but the yarn brush doesn't export when I export as an SVG.

Solved Clipped path randomly disappears a few moments after creating it.

I feel like I'm genuinely going insane. I have no idea why this happens or how to remedy it. The path in question is path209 but path2 (the blurred white circle on the speaker) also has disappeared before and I have no idea how I am supposed to bring these clips back, I have to resort to remaking them but they will still somehow disappear. Please help.
I'd like to add that path209 was a circle that had been given the tiling path effect and then clipped.
The download for the current file as requested: https://www.mediafire.com/file/ibgk36kz5zgqo6s/Inkscape_reddit_help_02092026.svg/file
UPDATE: after creating the clip then converting object to path seems to remedy this issue though I'll let you guys know weather that turns out to not be the case.

Solved How to make drawn lines/objects follow the path accurately?
Hello, I know there must be answers to this out there but I cannot find them. Sorry I don't know how to word this any better but why does my line not follow the path?
Thank you in advance.
Edit: I just figured it out, I was drawing with "Create Spiro path" mode.
Another question: Is there a way to change this mode of an already drawn object/line?

Help Help Recreating This Design
I’m new to Inkscape and trying to recreate this design. It’s a concentric, spherical tunnel effect made of octagons. So far I played around with the interpolate function on two octagons (one normal shaped and the other flattened) to try and make the top half of the figure but that produced a pyramid. I tried to use the Envelope Deformation to try to “bend” it for a more spherical look but that didn’t work. Does anyone have suggestions on what I should do to recreate this image? I’m open to starting from scratch too.

Help I want to change what the TAB key does in Inkscape
by default the tab key moves you to the next object in the drawing. I would like it instead to switch to Node Editor. (like pressing N does). However when I go to the keyboard shortcut editor I try to add a shortcut for TAB but the who app basically hangs and I have to shut it down in the task manager.
I tried editing the xml file that stores the shortcuts but I don't know what to put in keys="???". Typing in TAB didn't work either. Neither did CHAR(8).
Is it possible you can't remap TAB to something else?

Help Text not rendering properly
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I have no idea why it does this, Ive manually set the spacing between the letters to 40, otherwise it looks like a very deformed rectangle. I have no idea what may have caused this, this started to happen when I was editing a different svg file and I thought that it only happened in that particular svg file but it turns out its affects the entire software.

News Computing teachers in England can use free modules to teach vector graphics using Inkscape
There are a few computing curricula in England (and in the UK). One of them is 'Teach Computing' from the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) and it provides several free, ready-to-teach modules for teachers with slides, worksheets and general background information.
This vector graphics suite of lessons is aimed at Year 8 in KS3 (Key Stage 3 covers years 7-9 or children aged approx 11-14, so this is for 12-13 year olds) and teaches the pupils to create something from building blocks, e.g. a robot from rectangles and squares. They also learn about "z-order" (how their image will appear depending on which layer is on top, I'm not sure how much depth they go into the on the practicalities of how that also affects behaviour - e.g. clipping) and later in the series of lessons will create a little project.
Anyway I wondered if everyone already knew this. Teachers don't have to use Inkscape of course, but it's recommended as being free and open source and all the classroom material has screenshots of stuff being done on Inkscape.
I don't know how many teachers are actually using this module but you can see information about the class material here - you'll need to create an account to download the lesson plans though.
https://teachcomputing.org/curriculum/key-stage-3/media-vector-graphics
I am now wondering if teachers are confident users of Inkscape (I think we're all agreed that it has quite a steep learning curve!) and am now thinking I might run an online or possibly in-person at work* session for UK computing teachers about how to use it, in line with the NCCE lesson plans... but has someone already done this?
(*My job is all about working with computer science teachers in England / UK anyway so this would be a fairly natural and rather enjoyable extension!).

Help How to do a line going around the text?

Hello kind folk.
I've been messing with logos in inkscape and have a bit of a problem.
As you can see in the picture, I want the 'tail' to seem like it goes around the text. So naturally, I tried to make a cut out overlay to show when the tail is in foreground and when it is behind the text. Right now it's just a white outline around the line to show the effect I want, just only for part of the text.
The problem is I don't know how to do it. I tried to make a cut out of a part that goes before the text and then cut out that, but it didn't work for me. I'm pretty new to vector graphics, so I don't know how to do it cleanly. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Showcase Retro Pop-Art Magazine Cover Concept (Beginner btw)
Hey everyone! I created this retro-inspired poster/magazine cover concept vector artwork using Inkscape. It combines pop-art elements, vintage typography, a classic rangefinder camera, and a vintage car aesthetic with dynamic pop colors. Made completely in InkScape. Kinda messed with the placement of all things, was hard to put all those things inside the canvas, but ended up better than I expected. Lmk what yall think.
Feedback and critique are welcome!

Help How do I assign these to a right click shortcut?
I thought it was really convenient how I could right click on a node in Krita to change what type it was, and I think keeping it on a bar in Inkscape is less convenient. So how would I put these in the right click menu? I'm fine with a plug in if the program doesn't support it natively.
Also: I refuse to use keyboard shortcuts, and nothing you ever say will convince me to use them. (The fact that plus and minus is the most convenient way to zoom in and out, and the lack of undo and redo on the interface itself is already bad enough.) If you try to convince me to use keyboard shortcuts: you are a bully, and I will treat you as such.

Tips & Tricks Methods for working with large SVGs
Most people don't work with massive SVGs, but I have to give credit to the team for how to manage enormous files. Unfortunately, this can hit the limits of the single-threaded nature of Inkscape - one wrong move, and it pegs that one CPU until it's done. I don't think it's a memory issue.
I am working with a file with objects containing thousands of nodes. The file itself is easily over 6MB in size. I need to be able to zoom into specific areas and do edits. But I've found that sometimes, if I try to do an operation after the edit, it just pegs the CPU and I have to wait for it to finish (which can take 5-10 minutes on an M5 Mac). The workaround is to zoom out first (keyboard 5), tap escape twice to deselect, and zoom into a new area. This order is important. If I deselect while still zoomed in, it pegs the CPU. The rapid selection only works if zoomed out.
Just a tip if you are working on massive SVGs.

Help Trying to outline tapered edge
Sorry for the basic question, I'm pretty new to drawing in vector.
I'm trying to make this shape have a white outline:

However, I made it using tapered path effects pretty much exclusively (maybe not a great way of doing it, but it was the way I knew how). This path effect does not seem to work with stroke paint the way I would like it to.

Converting it into an object doesn't seem to work either, as that gets rid of the negative space in the middle of the central triangle, which I want to keep.

And even if it didn't get rid of the negative, it doesn't outline it correctly either.

Is there an easy way to make it so there's an outline that shares the tapered edge? I was thinking that a duplicated version of this shape that is a unified shape and is just white underneath the red would work, but I can't seem to make that align properly.
