I love that this phrase is the complete opposite of don't leave for tomorrow what you can do today (a popular saying in my country)

5

u/PhysicalAnt7488 1d ago edited 1d ago

Joking, i say, do tomorrow what could be done today

3

u/btveron 1d ago

I jokingly say that tomorrow me is really not going to be very happy with today me when I procrastinate too much lol

I saw on a t-shirt, I put the pro in procrastinate

There are 3 rules for professional procrastinators:

1) Don’t do today that what you can do tomorrow.

2) Don’t do tomorrow that what you can put off indefinitely.

3)Don’t do what you put off indefinitely that what you can avoid completely.

I’m going back to the gym today after about 2 months off due to family stuff.  I’m not stressing about weight, reps, anything until I’m back in the habit of going.

39

u/x_scion_x 1d ago

I really, really like this.

Would probably make returning much easier rather than trying to force yourself to hit some number.

9

u/bloodfist 1d ago

Personally I've only kept track of that stuff when I have gym buddies who get motivated by being competitive. Doesn't matter at all to me.

I count my reps to know how many to do, and I go up in weight when it feels right. If that's too hard today, I go back down. I notice when I've gone up in weight and it feels good, but I don't need to prove anything. Form, repetition, and consistency mean more to your gains than any specific number.

Only one I really put any self-worth into is how long I am able to keep up the routine. I've had to accept that sometimes I'll go a year or more where I just don't wanna and I can't make me. So I need to push myself through those first few months where it's just torture half the time. But like Terry Crews says, just go and get changed and spend the hour there. You can read a book in the parking lot if you want. But by then you'll probably want to work out at least a little.

3

u/skitchbeatz 1d ago

Honestly to get in the best shape the only unlock you need is just to remember all of these numbers from last week and go up 1% in your weight, or effort. It doesn't always work but in general that's all you need. The rest comes with it.

3

u/DisillusionedHobbit 1d ago

Interesting hearing what works for different people.  Keeping track of all that stuff keeps me motivated and on track - I like knowing that I was able to do something better than the last time.

3

u/Chemieju 1d ago

The number to hit is "do the warmup". 9 put of 10 times you'll do more afterwards. 1 out of 10 times you go home afterwards, and thats allright.

Same trick works for eating less fastfood, tell yourself "you can allways order a second time" and take only a small ammount. Most times you'll be satisfied after that, and occasionally you just eat some more.

2

u/NecessaryPen7 10h ago

Family stuff often turns into a reason to avoid.

I gained 20lbs and lost muscle this winter with family stuff. Zero reason i couldn't be doing squats and pushups. Would have helped with stress, sleeping, everything

Rest is good for the body and the mind. It should be a right on the constitution at this point since corporations that rule the world make us feel guilty for resting. That should force them to change their policies.

Of course, I am dreaming lol

8

u/Airmcghie1 1d ago

Exactly, and if she fell asleep it meant she needed it. We need to stop treating taking care of ourselves as a sin. In other countries they have a work life balance, they have to use their vacation days, they have universal healthcare and paid maternity and paternity leave. They have mental health care facilities and homes for the elderly that aren’t going to cost you 4-7k a month. We are hamsters on a wheel as the middle class disappears and the rich get richer while everyone one else is barely hanging on both monetarily and physically. And the powerful and rich just blame us. The amount of times I’ve heard the insanely wealthy complaining that poor people are entitled and just want hand outs and they’re just not budgeting well is astounding. None of these people would last a day in their shoes.

12

u/pchlster 1d ago

I was told to always master one step before advancing. These gym types talk about eating well before working out. I'm still convinced I could find more stuff to eat, so I'd better wait.

16

u/EEpromChip 1d ago

...can we space out the sets a bit with rest?

3

u/sephkane 1d ago

7

u/tillerman35 1d ago

I've spent my entire life trying to put the "ex" back in "exercise."

2

u/Cyraga 1d ago

I do the same. I'm in the 4th year of rest so that'll be about 24 sets when I get to it

4

u/rationalhippy 1d ago

You’re training sleeping, the exercise is rest.

694

u/zero5activated 1d ago edited 1d ago

Truthfully, sometimes your body needs sleep. It's not sloth; your body is just trying to heal and exercising can hinder that.

200

u/Flashy_Comfortable_8 1d ago

Agreed. If you’re falling asleep that fast after just setting up workout stuff, you’re definitely not getting enough sleep.

49

u/zero5activated 1d ago

Not enough sleep, a smaller diet, not enough nutrition, age etc. Or sometimes, it's just a nice day, sunny blue sky and soft winds can lull anyone to sleep. It's summer, enjoy your siesta and rest up.

5

u/wanderlinks 1d ago

Ahhh, it's been so long since I was lulled into sleep watching the blue sky. Miss it. :')

37

u/Cheet4h 1d ago

Could also be a sign of sleep illnesses, where you cannot get enough sleep, like narcolepsy, excessive daytime sleepiness, or sleep apnea.

/u/nocluebeing, if something like this is a regular occurence, consider consulting a sleep doctor. I know somebody with narcolepsy and their quality of life went up dramatically after they dialed in the right treatment.
Sleep illnesses are also not really something that is easy to deduce for the afflicted people, since it's really hard to gauge your own sleepiness in comparison to others.

4

u/goopuslang 1d ago

Reddit mob yesterday tried telling me, “if you’re healthy, you should workout at least once every day.” Like… dawgs… genuinely can’t talk to people on here

2

u/PeakNo6892 1d ago

I can't sit still and be awake. I'll be fine and full of energy and the instant I sit down in out for the next 5 hours.

Next thing I know I'm awake at 1am and have to twiddle my thumbs till I can go to work at 5. It is so frustrating how often I do this

3

u/ICame4TheCirclejerk 1d ago

Exactly this. My body has been healing all my life and my fat ass just can't get started on that exercise part.

NGL. I struggled to understand the title and picture correlation. I think I need a nap too.

57

u/photosendtrain 1d ago

It reads as if the daughter showed this image 5 mins after the workout stuff was setup. Which doesn't make sense because it says they were woke up. Hard to understand.

For those confused, OP is the person in the photo. They setup their workout equipment, then 5 minutes later took a nap. Their daughter took the picture, woke up OP, and then showed them it.

9

u/ibulleti 1d ago

I thought the husband saw it and thought, for me?

3

u/crumble-bee 1d ago

I used to sleep in my workout clothes to eliminate one obstacle for getting myself to the gym. Just an idea. (Now I have a workout buddy so getting started is easier.).

OTOH, I think sleep is more important than working out.

u/shhhpark 1d ago

putting a mat down....i'm all set up!!

6

u/P_J_Frye 1d ago

One night I went down to do my first day of P90X and I went whole hog. The goal was to be in shape by a certain date where I had to do a small performance shirtless. The next morning my wife was waking me up getting me off the same spot I failed my last sit up. She said I was there the whole night. I responded "I must have fell asleep". Her reply was "no, you passed out"

I remember years ago after having my daughter, I'd put on fitness videos from YouTube or whatever, with the full intention of working out. But my husband would walk into the living room to find me sitting on the floor against the couch, asleep, with a half eaten stick of string cheese 🤣

A for effort though !

u/49wanderer 1d ago

How many “Nap Reps” did you get in, exactly? Remember, it’s important to start out slowly, and gradually build them up! Once you’re ready, you can extend the length of time for each “Nap Rep”!

Oh, and once you really get the hang of those longer naps? I can recommend a really good exercise, where you use all of the skills you’ve learned and have been practicing in your “Nap Reps”, and apply it directly to an exercise you need to do, every evening. It’s called “8 Hours of Uninterrupted Sleep”.

You may have heard of it before, and it’s also highly likely that before you had children, you found meeting the demands and length of this exercise, quite easy. It’s been observed that teens and those in their 20s seem to be the best at it! 😂
