Tommy Rees comments on Penix
Tommy Rees was on the Schrager hour today and Peter Schrager asked Tommy about the pistol formation and getting Mike under center
Peter: âone of the things that last year would come up when all the stats were known was, like, he doesn't do under center enough. He's gotta learn how to go under center. Like, have you guys made a deliberate effort to kinda get him out of that pistol and put him under center?â
Tommy: âYeah. Very deliberate effort. Very deliberate effort. And that's something he has welcomed. Like, that wasn't, you know, a Mike thing as much as anything else. It was just... this is something that we believe in, and this is how we're gonna operate. And he has hit the ground running with that even, you know, through his rehab and getting healthier. That's something he's been doing for a while now.â
The stutter on âthat wasnât a mike thingâ almost looked like he was trying not to laugh đ
Itâs at the 34 minute mark
Get ready for the pistol Baker

Why does everyone consider Penix to be bad?
I get his injury history and worries regarding his knees, but he genuinely played pretty decent for us when given the chance. I think itâs pretty clear Zac Robinson held this offense back severely last year. I just donât understand how Penix is being considered a bottom 5 qb in the league.

Image [THE ATHLETIC] The NFLâs 10 worst quarterback situations
The Atlanta Falcons have one of the worst QB situations in the NFL.
The most important part of the quarterback discussion revolves around the starter. However, the full depth chart matters.

Our Defensive Front Seven
After a franchise record in sacks we have TWO returning players. Diablo, Dorlis.
And..
I feel like itâs a better front seven, even with the loss of Walker and JPJ. We have some monsters on the line now.
We may not get over 50 sacks but I think we will be borderline top 10 defense and better overall.
Iâm smoking the soapium.

[Kendall] - Falcons have QB questions in the present and future. Thatâs why they still have 4 of them
There is a cost for that, specifically the inability to keep a player at another position. Cunningham indicated Wednesday that the position that is short staffed because of the four quarterbacks is running back, where Atlanta kept only Bijan Robinson and Brian Robinson Jr. (Tyler Goodson is on the practice squad and is expected to be a regular in the game-day lineup early in the season through the leagueâs standard elevation rule â and probably throughout the season as natural attrition thins the current 53-man roster.)
That cost is worth paying because of the value of the quarterback position in the present and the future. The Falcons still havenât named a starter. When they do, they will be the last team in the league to make that announcement, and it will likely come on Monday.
That decision will be made in collaboration with the front office, coach Kevin Stefanski and president of football Matt Ryan, Cunningham said.
âWe all talk about it, and we all have been talking about it forever,â Cunningham said. âWe talk about every single position. When the coaches are ready, when the players are ready, we will make that decision.â
Cunningham wouldnât rule out Rush or Strand as options for the starting job, but common sense does. Barring injury, either Tagovailoa or Penix will start Week 1 against the Steelers in Pittsburgh, and while a quarterback injury is highly unlikely in practice, injuries are a major factor in why the Falcons are in the situation theyâre in.
