Chance Me, Admissions, and Prospective Student Q&A - 26/27 Cycle

Please place all admissions related posts here, in the form of comments, and current Cornell students will reply. Try to be detailed; if we don't have enough information, we can't help. Also, if you are a prospective student, and have questions about life at Cornell, feel free to post them here!

Any "Chance Me" or admissions related posts placed elsewhere will be removed. If you are a current student, and think that you could offer advice to someone considering Cornell, feel free to respond to some of the posts! Please only respond if you are qualified to do so. We will be checking through these regularly for spam.

Incoming students: you are now free to move about the subreddit!

As promised, the posting restrictions for all incoming students for the 26/27 school year have been lifted. While we do encourage you not to spam the subreddit with posts, your questions about classes, housing, and more will no longer be removed. Our goal was to keep the subreddit free for finals/commencement season. Now that that's over, we can return to regularly scheduled programming.

This does not apply to rising seniors or anyone else intending on applying to Cornell for future academic seasons (though prospective grad students are exempted). Your posts are likely better suited for subreddits like /r/chanceme or /r/ApplyingToCollege. If you want to specifically ask Cornell students for advice, our 26/27 Chance Me and Prospective Student Q&A megathread is live and pinned to the top of the subreddit.

Of course, you're still free to use the megathread if you wish (linked below). But keep in mind that they won't be pinned, so you may get limited to no interaction in them.

Happy Pride Month, and welcome to Cornell!

Who should I contact about Ice rink snow deposit schedule?

Post image

Does anyone know how one could figure out the ice rink show deposit schedule? I'm on campus almost everyday to teach/hold office hours/meet with students and often bring my dog James with me. His favorite spot on campus is the snow pile outside of teagle but for the life of me I can't figure out when they dump it so I could take James there to play and cool down.

I've tried calling the number Google gives for the ice rink but it doesn't work 😢

Master’s in Legal Studies (MSLS)

Hello all!

Was wondering if anyone has been through this program and what they thought of the academic rigor & time commitment.

I am not looking for any type of affirmations, so objective/factual comments would be very much appreciated. If it was easy and you spent no more than 5hrs a week, great. If otherwise, also great. Just trying to get a realistic pulse as to what is to be expected. Many thanks!

4000 HIST classes difficulty

I am a non-humanities major considering adding a 4000 HIST course because I'm interested in the topic. I have done well in the 1000 level HIST courses have taken but was wondering how much harder(specifically how much harsher the grading is) the 4000 level HIST courses are.

Global Internship Info?

Hey, all, I am a freshman at Cornell wondering about the global internship experience. Are they competitive to apply for? If anyone has experience with any of these internships could they please share. I’m also wondering how big each program is, like how many Cornell kids go? Also need to talk with advisors to figure out if this is an opportunity typically for upper classmen.

I am specifically interested in the one at the University of Sydney. If anyone has any info at all about these, I’d appreciate it.

FiberSpark at Collegetown Terrace has been awful, and CTT won’t let residents install an alternative ISP

I honestly don’t know what residents at Collegetown Terrace are supposed to do about the Internet situation anymore.

Since moving in, FiberSpark has been incredibly unreliable. I’ve experienced repeated complete outages, severe packet loss, and huge jitter, especially in the evenings. There have been times when the connection is technically ā€œonlineā€ but is basically unusable for gaming, Zoom, or even normal Internet use.

I’ve done a ridiculous amount of troubleshooting at this point. I’m using wired Ethernet, not Wi-Fi. My connection to the local gateway can be completely stable while packet loss appears immediately upstream and continues to the final destination. During one outage, I was seeing around 87% packet loss to Google while the local gateway still had 0% loss.

What makes this even more frustrating is FiberSpark’s customer service. I’ve sent them multiple tests, screenshots, WinMTR results, and repeated follow-up emails. They’ve acknowledged that there are broader network problems, but I still haven’t gotten a meaningful explanation of the cause, what exactly they’re doing to fix it, or a realistic ETA. Lately they have barely responded to my follow-ups at all.

So I tried to solve the problem myself. I was willing to pay for Spectrum out of my own pocket and keep FiberSpark as-is. There is already a coax outlet in my apartment. Spectrum sent a technician, but the technician needed access to the building’s communications/mechanical areas to trace or activate the old coax connection.

CTT told me they would not allow the Spectrum technician access, so I ultimately had to cancel the Spectrum installation.

That’s the part that really gets me. If the Internet included with the apartment were reliable, fine. But when the provided ISP is having repeated outages and severe packet loss, residents apparently also can’t independently pay for another wired provider to get a reliable connection.

At this point I’ve literally had to use my phone hotspot because it is more usable than my apartment Internet.

For the amount of rent CTT charges, I really don’t think ā€œuse your cellular hotspot because the building Internet doesn’t work and you can’t install an alternativeā€ is an acceptable situation.

Has anyone else at CTT been dealing with the same FiberSpark outages/packet loss? I’d especially be interested to know if people in other CTT buildings are seeing the same thing.

Still one laptop left for new students

I have one of my old laptops left I don’t use. MSI Katana Thin i5 13th gen w/ RTX 3050 - for 540 but negotiable since I know finances are rough, it’s just collecting dust so I want to get it out to people who will use it. New is 900, original box but the box has seen better days lol. The other laptop I had went to someone in the community and they love it. Feel free to reach out! We can meet somewhere safe like the police station or whatever:)
