Feeling strongly about an issue is fine. Expressing your views with passion is fine. Attacking other members of the community or using hateful or racist language is not. All of you are wise enough to know the difference. If you wouldn’t be comfortable saying what you want to say in a classroom full of students and faculty, don’t say it, or find a better way to say it. We aren’t fourth graders, we don’t call each other names. If you do so, your comments will be removed. If you keep doing so, you’ll be banned. And if you use hateful language, you’ll be immediately banned and reported to Reddit. So please, make your point, be passionate about it, but respect your fellow community members or leave this sub.

Any intermediate-ish level players looking to hit a few times a month? Dm me if interested.
Hi everyone, I'm an Italian PhD student and (probably) I'll be doing a few months' research visit at UPenn, likely starting between January and March. I'll probably rent a room in a shared apartment, most likely around University City, budget-wise looking at roughly $700-1200/month for a single room.
A couple of things I'd love honest input on:
1- Cost of living: for someone renting a room near campus (not a full apartment) or in a nearby safe-ish neighborhood, what's a realistic total monthly budget (rent + food + transport + going out sometimes)? Trying to figure out if ~$2400/month total is comfortable or tight.
2- Safety: I've looked at UPenn's public crime log and it seems like there's a fair number of incidents reported. I know statistics can look scary out of context, so I'd love some honest, lived perspective:
For those of you who live/study there, how does it actually feel day to day?
Do you feel safe walking around University City in the evening, alone?
Are there specific blocks/areas right around campus I should avoid even within the "Penn Patrol Zone"?
How safe is SEPTA (subway/regional rail) in practice? Any lines, stations, or times of day to be more careful with?
What if I end up finding a room outside the Penn Patrol Zone (e.g. somewhere cheaper or in a different neighborhood)? Does safety drop off a lot right outside that perimeter, or is it more gradual/depends a lot on the specific block?
My baseline is different from what's typical in the US — I'm used to cities where I wouldn't feel unsafe walking alone at night as long as I'm paying attention to where I'm going. How much of an adjustment should I expect, realistically?
Any general safety habits you'd recommend, especially for someone coming from a different environment?
Not trying to be paranoid, just want a realistic picture from people who actually live there, since online crime stats can be hard to interpret without local context. Thanks in advance!

Right now, my schedule is only 3.5 credits out of the 5.5 available (BEPP 1000, WH 1010, WRIT 0020, and MATH 1400). I've already fulfilled my language requirement, so I want to try and take at least one other class. I was going to do LGST or MGMT, but they're both full.
What other options do I have? Is there anything in the Wharton curriculum that I could take early? Or another unrelated class worth taking?

I ve recently started my program at UPENN. Yesterday I went to penngym at 10pm it was pretty packed😭 American gym equipment look really intimidating and also lots of people being there made me anxious ashell (plus, I need to convert lbs to kgs each time) Based on y’alls experience when is the less crowded /quietest time at penn gym? weightlifting area particularly

Hi, I am a CO27' who is planning to apply early decision to either upenn CAS(college of arts and sciences), columbia, or Wharton for economics major. I would say have a decent chance at either Columbia or CAS, and a bit of reach for wharton. I am leaning towards CAS for an easier pathway into Upenn. My goal is to work in banking after college.
I like Upenn more than columbia generally. One thing that makes me hesitant to apply CAS econ ED are the possible division between Wharton and CAS, despite being the same major. Is there is a silent division within CAS econ students and Wharton students? If so, in terms of what? Is it the way how Wharton students treat CAS econ student with same goal, club recruiting, internships, programs, etc?
And if there is a difference, would it just be a smarter choice to take a shot at Wharton(my dream school)?
Please let me know your thoughts, thank you!

Hi all,
I am a new commuter to the area and was wondering any solid free, parking spots in the area. I don’t have much spare cash to pay for a garage and will not have time in the day to move my car every 2-3 hours.
Currently I drive around 34th street, around Sabrina’s Cafe until I find a spot.
Ideally, I can park as close to 34th and market as possible. I’m fine with walked 10-15 mins to 34th street too.
Even cheaper parking lots would be helpful.
Thanks in advanced all!

Hey y’all, I am new to Penn and Philadelphia, as well as the east coast in general. I am looking for advice on finding community around university city as a graduate student. I am in the humanities and am not looking for recreational sports. It’s a bit difficult for me to understand what clubs are meant for undergraduates versus all Penn students. I don’t want to do auditions either? Looking to make friends, thank you! :)
edit: just to be clear, I’m looking for community outside of my work/studies

Hey, I consider myself fairly strong in French, and am hoping to start applying to universities in France and Switzerland this year. However, I have had a complex high school journey, and also have an associate's in Art and Design from CCP. My sister suggested that I get a bachelors in the U.S. then go to a Masters in France or Switzerland, which would likely be a lot easier to get into than trying to scramble together my high school and college transcripts which are... complicated.
My end goals are to:
Master French, like really master it.
Probably get a teaching degree so that I can have a steady job.
That being said, my main question is like. If I'm going into a French degree already at a B2, how will I do? What kind of classes will be available to me? And also, do y'all have any thoughts? Are any of y'all doing/have done the French program? Did you study abroad?
Thank you!

I recently got a job with penn, doing inpatient onc. I have 12 months of onc experience at another hospital. I am starting as a clinical nurse 1. In 3 months, once i have 15 total months of experience, does anyone know if i would qualify for clinical nurse 2, or do i have to start all over and do 15 months of experience at penn to qualify. If anyone knows please help!!!

Hey everyone, I got sick of clicking through 5 different Canvas course pages and nested module tabs every night just to figure out what assignments were due.
So I built a lightweight, open-source tool called canvas2markdown:
https://canvas.upenn.edu/courses/ID/assignments/ID), so one click takes you straight to the submission page.GitHub: https://github.com/negbuna/canvas2markdown
(If you're not into terminal setup, you can just paste the github link + your Canvas calendar link into Claude or ChatGPT and ask it to run this for you.)

Ok so to start, I’m NOT a UPenn student, but despite living in philly for my entire life (20 years), I haven’t once wandered UPenn’s campu. I remember going to wee when I was younger for tutoring but that’s about all the experience I have with UPenn. I’ve always wanted to explore all of what the campus has to offer, sightseeing, meeting new people, etc. I’ve got some old friends from hs that are currently juniors there now, should I ask for an un-official tour or just walk right on campus?

I have a few questions about the questbridge financial aid award at Penn! any info would be really helpful :)
is PSIP included in the award? there's a "clinical fee" included in the award, but it's only $770 a year...
how do we receive some of the indirect costs? for example, the package includes Personal Expenses $2,008.00, Transportation $1,080.00, and Travel $904.00 a year. are these supposed to be sent to my bank?
do questbridge scholars have to set up the PennPay?
I am just really confused on how financial aid works here and would appreciate any advices/info

Hello! I am a Freshman and am currently deciding between majoring in Biology or HSOC on the Pre-PA track. I was originally thinking biology, but I have heard that it hurts the GPA of many students compared to if they majored in HSOC. But then again, HSOC puts a lot more emphasis on reading and interpreting large volumes of text related to medicine (and I wouldn't consider myself a big fan of reading or writing). Any advice/help would be very appreciated!
