CHICAGO (AP) — Diesel hit a new record price in the U.S. on Friday, soaring to an average of $5.85 a gallon for the first time ever as the six-month war with Iran disrupts the world’s flow of fuel.
Because diesel is used for many freight and delivery networks, higher diesel prices mean higher transportation costs for a long list of everyday goods. More expensive fuel is increasing bills for businesses across sectors — some of which have already passed off costs to consumers in the form of added fees on online orders and packages in the mail. And shoppers may see more and more sticker shock trickle into store shelves.
The increases could have political implications, with economic issues likely to be top of mind for many voters in November’s midterm elections.
One of the most immediate strains falls in the grocery aisle, particularly with produce, meat and other perishable foods that need to be hauled in and restocked frequently — or even harvested using diesel-powered farm equipment. It can take time for all of those costs to trickle down.

Don't let denial come out on top. Too many politicians, media outlets and CEO's using different perception and reality filters from the rest of us. How can we combat this line of thinking and not end up with the scenario of Don't look up. How to we ask these people to explain their thinking in an evidenced or even thoughtful way, to demonstrate that they are just being wilfully ignorant.

SS: Mainstream media take on UNEP’s new report (“Limiting Overshoot”) confirms what collapse-watchers already assumed: 1.5C is dead.

Even the optimistic path now lands at 1.8C minimum, and the report states outright there are “no good outcomes above 1.5C.”

The numbers: at 3C, glaciers lose over a quarter their mass by 2100, sea levels rise up to 13cm from that alone, and global food production could drop 14% by 2050 without major adaptation.

Current national policies have us on track for 2.3C+.

Holding even 1.8C requires halving global emissions by 2035, a target no major economy is remotely close to.

The report frames “overshoot, peak, decline” (blow past 1.5C, then claw back via emissions cuts + carbon removal) as the realistic best case, not a fringe scenario. Notably, Climate Analytics called out UNEP for barely mentioning fossil fuel phase-out, diagnosing the wound while dodging the obvious treatment.

The Nepal glacial flood disaster gets cited as a preview: warming already locked into the system, not a future hypothetical. This is a UN body (not activists, not media) saying the guardrail everyone built policy around for a decade is gone, and what’s left is damage control.

Submission Statement: A new UN report has found that 1.5 degree warming is inevitable and we need to prepare for the severe consequences of that. More analysis on this is gradually appearing as the initial news release was under NDA until an hour ago.

Arctic ice summer minimum is becoming increasingly sparse as global median temperatures increase. Loss of albedo effect from the sea ice is likely to compound this. A blue ocean event is becoming more and more imminent as emmisson of greenhouse gases continue to accelerate from man made sources and natural feedback loops are triggered by continued warming.

I ask about the UK as that's where I'm from and the country I know most about.

Just seems like we have a lot going for us and a lot against us.

Pros: small, defensible island, temperate weather, decent economy by global standards.

Cons: aging population, low birthrate, mass panic about illegal immigrants (haven't even experienced climate change refugees yet), increasingly unpredictable weather, extremely densely populated island, not food self sufficient, increasingly politically polarised, economy stagnant, etc.
