WHAT WAS THAT BANG? *the megapost*
Did you hear something loud? Do you think it was fireworks, an exploding transformer, or anything else?
Post it here!
Since there are so many booming noises, please try to include a location and time.

Special noodle
Anyone know what happened to Special Noodle? I saw about 10 or so Sheriff cars out front yesterday and it looked like they were arresting someone. Now it’s all closed up.

Cabrillo STEM event
Cabrillo is having their STEM event/showcase on their Aptos campus on the 15th. All of their science departments, technology departments, and math departments along with some outside science people set up tables and have live demonstrations and hands on activities for all ages. It’s open to students and the public, and is a super fun event if you can go!

Work in Santa Cruz
Hey guys, looking for part-time work as I'm temporarily back here and struggling to find anything. I've reached out to Santa Cruz Staffing as well and they haven’t gotten back to me. I'm 30, have a Bachelors in Psychology and speak spanish from being abroad awhile. I've worked in tons of restaurants, pizza places, teaching English, social media. Kind of a lot of odd jobs lol. Please let me know where you know is hiring!

Roarin the Redwoods Car Show
Has anyone been to the Roaring the Redwoods car show that can speak to the types of cars that are normally there? Is it predominately hot rods, or is there a variety of years, makes, and styles? I've never brought my car to a show before but I thought this might be a good first time.

Anti-vax KSQD show this afternoon
The “talk of the bay” show hosted by Chris Kohn has a bunch of Trump-humping anti-vax RFK Jr supporters on this afternoon and he is letting them spout all kinds of right-wing boomer MAHA bullshit. One of them even claims to be a nurse. Any responsible host with half a brain should be ripping these fools to pieces.
Independent public radio is usually a great alternative to corporate-owned media. I’ve been giving KSQD money every year for at least the last 20 years but never again. All my public radio donations are going to KZSC (88.1 FM) instead from now on - they have better overall programming anyway.
On the plus side: the first 2 calls they took from listeners called RFK Jr an idiot. Good to know the locals here still have the ability to think critically.

How would you handle this situation? I’m anxious about getting to work safely
EDIT: thank you guys so much for the help and advice, if you guys could also maybe help alongside finding cheap bikes, maybe anywhere i can get a trike would be a good option for me cause it would be quicker since I don't know how to ride a bike? I'm just not sure where I could find a trike/tricyle
ORIGINAL POST: I’m F18 and currently living in Santa Cruz without a car or bike (I don't have a driver license but I'm trying to learn). I just moved from San Francisco so I was always used to busing and walking. I recently got a job near the mall in Capitola, and the biggest thing stressing me out right now is transportation. I live around Ocean St, and normally I have to walk from my house to the bus stop around Ocean & Water, which takes about 10-20 minutes. I really dislike this part of my commute because there are areas along the walk where I don’t feel safe, I've been harassed by tweakers, and this morning a guy was running around swinging a baseball bat. Most of the time I deal with it, but it's bad when I’m walking alone early in the morning or in the evenings. I’m not really worried about the bus itself or capitola, it’s mainly the small walking portion.
I’m trying to get my driver’s license and eventually a car, but I’m still learning and obviously that isn’t an immediate solution as it would be several months before I could even think about affording a car. I'm looking at buying a bike once I get a more steady income and learning how to ride it.
A lot of the time now I’m Ubering but I also can’t afford to Uber everywhere long term.
What would you do in my situation? Are there safer walking routes from the Ocean St area to a bus stop that I might not know about? Are there other bus stops/routes to Capitola that would involve less walking through areas that feel sketchy even if it may take a bit longer? And is there anything else you’d recommend while I work toward getting my license/bike?
I know some people might say “just walk faster” or “you’ll be fine,” but I’m genuinely trying to find a practical solution that makes me feel comfortable enough to actually use public transportation consistently or walking not being so bad. For some reason I feel way more unsafe here than I did in San Francisco.
Any advice from people who know Santa Cruz/Capitola well would be really appreciated.

Davenport California sign at the Davenport bluffs.
Right across the street from the restaurants in davenport. Big spectacular cliffs. It's the beginning of the bicycle trail to Santa Cruz that they're still working on.

Collector’s Corner (Comics,action figures)
Does anyone remember that cool comic book shop in midtown, Collectors Corner? It was at 714 Soquel Ave. I loved it as a kid, even won one of their drawing contests with Boba Fett artwork. Id love to see pics of the place back then if any of you have them. The owners were super nice. Around 90’s to early 2000’s I believe.
