Discussion /r/motiondesign Updates: Post Flair, Spam Prevention

Hi all, a few updates for /r/motiondesign.

Spam

In an effort to reduce low-quality and spam posts here, we have implemented new post requirements. New posts that don't meet a minimum account age or subreddit karma threshold will be automatically filtered out.

To further prevent gamification, I am not disclosing these limits here but they are very modest and reasonable. Anyone interacting with this community should not be filtered, and even so, you will have the opportunity to message us for an exception. But this should discourage most of the spam we've been seeing. Thanks /u/Zeigerful for making this post.

Post Flair

We also added some post flair to help differentiate posts and allow users to filter & search by topic. All new posts require that one of the available flair types be selected:

Project Showcase | Reel | Inspiration | Discussion | Question | Tutorial | [Custom] (Where user can input their own)

User Flair

A few new user flairs are available. For those who aren't aware, these show up next to your username any time you make a post or comment in /r/motiondesign

Now available: Professional | Student | [Add My Social Handle] -- A custom text field where you can plug an Instagram, Behance, etc.

Let us know if you love or hate these new updates. Nothing is set in stone and this is meant as a discussion starting point. Please share any ideas you may have to make this a better place to share work, inspiration and discussion related to motion design. Hopefully we can continue to bring a higher quality experience to everyone here at /r/motiondesign.

Merci !

Question How would I make this noise stroke effect?

Hello,

I'm trying to make this effect of the multi line stroke displacement effect that that is happening in this Spotify video. I've tried using Turbulent Displace and messing around with displacement map, but its not really working. I felt like I've made something similar in the past thought accidental.

felt like I learned a lot with this one, as I'm still a little new to motion design! Especially with the 3D camera and page turning, that was a real challenge for such a small shot, if I was to remake this I'd definitely explore concepts & different shots more in the storyboarding phase

Question Client requesting source files - was not covered in contract.

I goofed a bit here.

I've had two projects with a "new" client this year. This is via a creative director I used to work with from another company.

On my first job, I forgot to add in the clause stating project files are not included. I revised this but of course still somehow emailed the first version of the quote. This was during a rebrand and 100% established the typography principles they will be rolling with in the future. It also included a treatment to the logo that I'm now questioning if it they will be using it as a hero logo bump. I think their plan is to take my treatments and start duplicating them on the cheap through a cheaper guy. This is a fairly large company (probably $40M annual revenue)

She surely expects them to be included since that was the case with the previous company I worked with her at (a client of many years ago who I'm still locked into that agreement with). Of course, many clients expect them and I've found myself losing a good chunk of revision work to them passing my files off to someone else.

The second project was a rush job in which I was assisting someone else who they hired, providing motion design assets to their video editing work.

They are now requesting source files from that last project to leverage in a new video with this other dude.

We scoped out a timeline and everything on a third project before, but they've delayed it for months with little to no communication, finally replying that they still intend to do it at some point. They are also very slow with payment, sometimes taking 1-2 months and multiple reminders to close out my invoices. I'm not crazy about my experience working with them so far.

That said, I did fail to communicate this specific item and I'm thinking I should just bite the bullet on what I failed to mention and send over the files.

That said, with a rather slow year these past months, I'm treasuring every invoice I'm able to send. I'm not particularly confident in future work with them anyway.

Thoughts?

Question LottieFiles Says “Free” but Still Asking Me to Subscribe — September 2026

Hi everyone! I’m having an issue with LottieFiles, and I’m wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same thing.

I’m trying to download a free Lottie animation. The animation is clearly labeled “Free,” and the download section has a regular “Lottie JSON” option without the Premium/crown icon.

However, when I click Lottie JSON, the LottieFiles Premium subscription popup appears.

I’m currently on the Free plan, and according to LottieFiles, Free users can download up to 10 public animations per month. I haven’t downloaded any animations this month, so I should still have all 10 downloads available.

I also tried clicking “Save animation,” but that also brings up the subscription/upgrade popup.

Has anyone experienced this recently, especially in September 2026?

Inspiration Can someone breakdown this Base44 launch video sequence

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been studying these frames for sometime now trying to see if I can figure out how they did it. I'm still pretty new to motion design so if anyone could help out I'd really appreciate it.

Was this done by hand or is this something they did procedurally.

I use cavalry so I'd like to know if there is a way to do it procedurally

Thanks

Tutorial 4 small native AE features that quietly save me hours (no plugins/scripts needed)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I spent some time cleaning up my workflow and realized Adobe shipped a few tiny native features that replace stuff I used to need expressions and paid scripts for.

Thought I'd share the actual breakdown, since they flew under the radar with all the 3D/SVG talk:

1. Proportional Scrubbing:

Select multiple layers, hold Ctrl + Alt (Win) / Cmd + Option (Mac) and drag any numeric property like Opacity or Position.

Instead of setting everything to the same value, AE spreads it proportionally from your first-selected layer to your last. Works on keyframes too. Select 10 layers with the same drop animation, hold the shortcut and drag the keyframes to get a perfect cascade.

Tip: The order you select matters. Top-to-bottom vs bottom-to-top completely changes the spread direction.

This one alone replaced my staggering plugin.

2. Copy Frame to Clipboard

There's now a button in your Comp panel that copies the current frame to your clipboard as a clean render. No more Composition > Save Frame As...or screenshots full of guides/nulls.

Just park your playhead, click it, and Ctrl+V straight into decks, communication, anywhere. Super handy for storyboards and quick client checks.

3. You can finally edit Illustrator gradients natively

If you import art with gradients, right-click the layer > Create > Create Shapes from Vector Layer > delete the extra group.

Now under Gradient Fill, you get full control over Scale, Rotation, Opacity, Start/End points.

All inside AE. No need to jump back to Illustrator to tweak it.

4. Crop Comp to Selected Layer Bounds

Not brand new, but they finally put it where you need it.

Select any layer > Right-Click > Crop Comp to Selected Layer Bounds and AE instantly resizes the comp to that layer's exact size.

Perfect for cleaning up pre-comps for icons, character parts, or reusable assets. No more manually creating a new comp and copying layers over.

None of these are flashy features, but together they've cut a lot of annoying busywork.

If you want to see real examples, you can check out the full breakdown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y4hveZUvY4

Discussion Nobody warns you how much you lose when school ends

Been talking to a bunch of animation grads lately, mostly people a year or so out, and I keep hearing the same thing in different words.

Ask what they miss and it's never the classes. It's the structure. Knowing what today's task is, what tomorrow's is, and having an actual sense of how you get from a blank page to something finished. School hands you that without you noticing. Then it's gone, and suddenly you're the one who has to build the whole path yourself, alone, with no idea who else nearby is stuck on the same problem.

Talked to two different people, two different schools, and got almost the identical answer without prompting either one. That's not a coincidence, that's a gap nobody's naming.

Everything that exists to fill it half-works. Job boards assume you already know exactly what role you're looking for. Discord's a coin flip on whether the right person ever sees your post. Neither one replaces what actually made school useful, which wasn't the degree, it was having a team and a process built in.

Ended up building a competition around that exact idea, teams working through animation production stage by stage, so it's not one person carrying everything alone. Recruiting 30 team captains right now. UMDB, if anyone's curious: umdb.org

Genuinely curious what other people did to solve this after graduating, if anything.

This project took me 5-6 months, not due to technical issues, but because I kept second-guessing if I actually liked it. Eventually, I just decided to let it go and post it!

Thank you!

Discussion What is the best way to find good clients consistently in your opinion?

Been doing motion design for a bit now and I still don't know where to find founders/startups to pitch my services to consistently. All I do right now is post on a discord servers and hope somebody finds me. I want to try cold emails and social media outreaching but I don't know where to start.

Discussion Why does changing the focal length completely change how a 3D animation feels?

Focal length changes more than just how much of the scene fits in frame. A wider lens exaggerates depth and makes camera movement feel more dramatic, while a longer lens compresses space and can make the same movement feel much flatter. That's why choosing the lens early can completely change the feel of a shot.

Question How to add shake to the screen

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

There's an animation I made recently. I wanted to ask how to add shake to composition so when the star drops screen shakes and after that bar appears. Any feedback is appreciated, especially on what I could improve.
