What is a degree in tech

297

u/craigdahlke 16h ago

It means technology

Source: I have a degree in words

116

u/2infNbynd 16h ago

You mean wordsnology

11

u/skdowksnzal 10h ago

You’re quite the wordsmith aren’t you.

10

u/Todd_wittwicky 10h ago

You are very obviously not a Wordsnologist…

11

u/skdowksnzal 10h ago

I am a diy word worker at best

7

u/Todd_wittwicky 10h ago

Same…same…

18

u/ttcklbrrn 12h ago

Yeah but I've never heard of any university that just offers a degree in Technology. That's like saying you got a degree in Science: People are gonna want to know which one.

8

u/lemming2012 11h ago

All of them

1

u/jimmyjohnga 6h ago

It’s honestly too bad they don’t have the whole biography in the comments of everyone we ever see on the internet.

1

u/ArmoredJeep 1h ago

Imagine the load times though. Everyone typing their whole life story before you can even hit reply

5

u/ZipZoomBingPOW 10h ago

I have 98.6 degrees.

46

u/unbalanced_checkbook 14h ago

It's always refreshing when you open the thread and the top comment is the exact sentence that's in your head.

u/HereOnCompanyTime 9h ago

He wrote a book about recovery and is pushing a gofundme so he's promoting with this story everywhere. So, guess he's moved past using his "degree in tech".

Excerpt from his gofundme that cracked me up:

Hello, I’m Danny Ellerd, the author of Recovery Is Possible. My mission is to give away 1,000 copies of my book to the homeless and those struggling with addiction who can’t afford to buy one.

So his gofundme is to buy his own book.

6

u/MasterpieceNo8893 8h ago

Maybe he is self published. If so then you gotta buy even your own books 🤷‍♀️

2

u/voiceofreasonne 14h ago

Came here to ask if that’s a thing?

1

u/FearMyCrayons2023 8h ago

Could be anything for cyber ops, cyber security, comp sci, comp e, robotics, data science

0

u/cryptopig 13h ago

The only reason i opened this post was to ask this question.

158

u/VideoGamerConsortium 18h ago

I majored in failure

21

u/Citizen_Null5 15h ago

Well, failing is acceptable, giving up is not!

-7

u/EddieVanzetti 10h ago

Tough shit, I don't live my shitty life to make randos on the internet happy

2

u/LurkingRodent 17h ago

I'm better than you at being a failure, do better.

2

u/VideoGamerConsortium 17h ago

If that were true you would have gotten the award.

Sorrry Sorry I am king failure.

1

u/LurkingRodent 17h ago

That's precisely why I'm failing harder, not even an award.

2

u/VideoGamerConsortium 18h ago

I cannot believe I am worthy of an award. Thankyou reddit stranger.

Id like to thank my parents for funding my stint in college with zero direction. And id like to thank myself for deciding poker dealing was a better option.

I regret everything.

1

u/Willie_Fistrgash 15h ago

"You can major in Gameboy if you know how to bull shit."

0

u/mephi5to 9h ago

As mathematicians would say - a negative result is still a result. You could say you majored in math. Almost

0

u/VideoGamerConsortium 9h ago

You sound much too accomplished

Majored in books, work in tech. Best of both worlds. It's possible. I do it every day.

I like this. I'm going to see if I can go back for a second bachelor's in LEGO. Probably more lucrative than my MFA in Creative Writing. I ended a Systems Architech/Admin/Jack of all Trades person. Shrug.

2

u/SadnessMonster 18h ago

I wanted to be a lego master builder so badly.

0

u/MediocreAndLukewarm 18h ago

Library technology is a great career field!

1

u/Potent_Quotient 18h ago

I majored in winning the lottery.

1

u/lostalaska 18h ago

I decided to get into specialty tech so I got my degree in transistors.

Yea this sub is complete shit. Time to leave. It’s all AI

u/VoidborneKitten 18h ago

Ai sloppost

142

u/ArkhamMetahuman 17h ago

The person in the post is real, and the before photo is on his book on how he overcame addiction, the second image also matches up with what he looks like from photos of him online. If anything, the only thing that could possibly be AI is the second picture, but there were multiple pictures that had him dressed the same and in the same background but from a slightly different angle. Highly unlikely to be AI, he also has a LinkedIn account, with his story being noted on the Hope is Alive website, which according to my search is an official charity meant to help addicts. From his own LinkedIn: "Information Systems and an Associate of Science in Enterprise Development. My background in technology" so the post only wasn't specific enough about his college degree, and he published a book about his experiences. He was also interviewed on video by a Christian Charity in a video ten months ago, which was posted to Youtube. The first picture was also on the cover of his book. Even if you want to say the picture is AI, the story and person is not.

27

u/VoidborneKitten 17h ago

I was going off the second image, with the OSU cowboys eye having the iris at the bottom rather than the top and the weird random seeming orange symbols on the top banner. It looked like whoever made this shoved it into an ai model to create the actual post, even if based off a real story.

12

u/ArkhamMetahuman 17h ago

Fair enough. I have no idea about the OSU cowboys, I just didn't want people to downplay the man's story and falsely accuse it of being AI. Good eye with that detail. I don't know why someone would use an QI image when I was about to find a bunch of images of him just by searching his name though.

4

u/VoidborneKitten 17h ago

Understandable, his accomplishments are very real.

4

u/ArkhamMetahuman 17h ago

I apologize if my tone might have been confrontational. I if the image is AI, I have no idea why they wouldn't just use a picture when the guy has a LinkedIn of him dressed almost identically to the photo

3

u/Goblinkiller34 14h ago

I think i saw these images years ago before the ai boom. Don't think this is ai

-1

u/Aeroncastle 14h ago

Give a source, saying something is real has the same amount of believablility as that unsourced image

0

u/ArkhamMetahuman 14h ago

Indias Times ran a story about it, Oklahoma State, the university he claims to go to mentioned the story this post is about when in an article about the student award he earned, the photo of him as an addict is on the cover of his book, he has a LinkedIn, gave an in person interview for a Christian Charity called Hope is Alive, which also interviewed his father in person.

-4

u/Aeroncastle 14h ago

And yet, no link

-4

u/Express_Toe_8456 13h ago

I get where you're coming from, but sometimes the visuals speak for themselves. It’s still pretty cool to see transformations like this, even without all the details.

-1

u/Aeroncastle 12h ago

No they don't, specially in a time where I can ask 50 times for AI to generate a lie in the time it took me to write this message

4

u/WebSerious7105 13h ago

I live in Oklahoma City, and this is a very real organization and a very real person/story

-8

u/alllifeishell 17h ago

Ai comment.

2

u/ArkhamMetahuman 14h ago

Shoot, my bad, were you referring to the other commentator?

3

u/alllifeishell 11h ago

Yea. All these people thinking everything and everyone is a bot or ai is getting old. Just braindead nonsense being repeated over and over.

2

u/ArkhamMetahuman 17h ago

I cited proper evidence that could be obtained from a short google search. It took me around ten minutes to find this information.

2

u/FartExpo 15h ago

They were not responding to you.

5

u/PaxNova 16h ago

Hold on, OSU accepted him for a four year degree direct from his arrest?

1

u/enigT 6h ago

maybe it's out-of-nowhere state university

7

u/mustardmadman 18h ago

3

What makes you think that?

-9

Prove it.

-5

u/proteinstains 17h ago

Find me a degree in "tech". It's not a thing.

9

u/Gidia 14h ago

Bad writing isn’t proof of AI, just of bad writing.

4

u/htonzew 18h ago

Tech isn't a degree

6

u/MediocreAndLukewarm 18h ago

It’s a field. Like saying a person got a degree in medicine.

2

u/bbc_nees 14h ago

AI took his job.

1

u/Yobber1 8h ago

But would they have done this for a black man?

2

u/Xylus1985 7h ago

A degree in Tech? I guess it’s back to homeless then

1

u/ThadTheImpalzord 14h ago

Genetics are such a mother fucker, I would kill to have a thick beard like that meanwhile he's starving, sleep deprived, and unkept and his body STILL makes a thick luscious beard regardless

1

u/obeecanobee 11h ago

OSU? Oregon State University, Oklahoma State University, Ohio State university….?

2

u/Brandelyn1135 8h ago

Oklahoma State University, judging by the Pistol Pete behind him

👏👏👏👏

1

u/NoDoze- 17h ago

Too bad he's not going to be able to get a job.

-7

u/ToriGallo 19h ago

Honestly, huge shoutout to those cops for recognizing a medical emergency instead of just tossing a dying man into a cell. It gave this man the second chance he needed to completely rewrite his story

11

u/mustardmadman 18h ago

This is an ai post

0

u/ArkhamMetahuman 18h ago

His story has been noted on video testimonies, used to promote an anti addiction charity, and the second photo matches up with other images if you search him up. His book is also published. Highly unlikely to be AI.

It takes personal effort to overcome any typw of addiction, other people can help sure, but the core of the work falls on the addict. I hope you don't think overcoming addiction is easy in any way, because it isn't

-4

u/armoured_bobandi 17h ago

No, it's not. But if this story is true, he didn't go from homeless to having a degree in "tech" (lol what) all by himself

3

u/ArkhamMetahuman 17h ago

He has a degree in applied computer sciences. This would still fit the criteria of this server friend, it doesn't matter if he didn't do it all by himself, what matters is that people were good enough to help him and he was good enough to pay it forward by advocating for the homeless. I apologize if my tone was confrontational.

-5

u/armoured_bobandi 17h ago

It does matter, because that's what the story is implying. He wants you to think he did it on his own

3

u/ArkhamMetahuman 17h ago

Respectfully, I don't believe ther eis enough evidence on this post to be able to make an accurate assessment of that.

0

u/armoured_bobandi 17h ago

That opinion goes both ways. There isn't enough evidence to prove this is even a real story

Why are you in a mademesmile sub when you’re this cynical?

0

u/armoured_bobandi 15h ago

Because I like things that actually make me smile. Not stories that are just text over an image that rely on one person's narrative to believe.

Did you ask every person in this comment section who disagreed the same question? Or just me

1

u/etherealsounds 17h ago

Ha! A degree in tech. Worthless today! I’ve got 20 years experience in tech and can’t find a job to save my life!

1

u/Dr_JackaI 17h ago

This is a real story from like 10 years ago now

1

u/LemeSayDis 16h ago

Isn’t that the dude in requiem?

2

u/gonephishin213 1h ago

Jared Leto? No, he's still on crack

1

u/nightsorter 13h ago

People underestimate how much attitude affects their reality. If they wholeheartedly believe they’ll never experience joy or happiness in life, they won’t put in the effort required to find it. This guy proves it’s always possible.

0

u/blackeyesamurai 19h ago

I’m smiling.

0

u/rrkrabernathy 18h ago

Did he get a nose job as well?

Millions of these stories in the recovery rooms. Friend of mine used to shoot oxi and now he's a lawyer that runs miles a day. My sponsor was a 2nd striker gang member locked up in Pelican Bay and now paints houses and owns his own business

0

u/aaeko 12h ago

And $80k of student loan debt

0

u/classic_noodlanding 10h ago

Incredible wow wow wow wow

0

u/No_Nature1513 10h ago

Great! Now he can go into debt paying the student loans for a job that AI is gonna do and start the whole process over again.
Thanks!
Jk this is always nice to see.

0

u/EnsignMJS 8h ago

Great for him. He cleans up well.

0

u/Ok-Sugar-9681 1h ago

Why "put his head down"? Really love the story and love the post, but that phrase rubs me the wrong way. I guess it reminded me not too dearly of the common "advice" given to the students/younger people "Shut up and put your head down. You are at the bottom of the barrel."

-5

u/Famous_Phase_7829 17h ago

This is something that's only attainable by white people. No one sympathizes with black people or latinos when they're struggling, because the perception is that it's their fault. If its a white person, the perception is that they're down on their luck and need some help. Wish this was universal

2

u/IB_ 12h ago edited 12h ago

So, you've never seen a person of color dig themselves out of a challenging situation and become a fulfilled, successful person? Your perspective seems like that of an ignorant racist.

But here are a few examples that you should recognize.:

David Stewart - 1 of 8 kids born into poverty and racial inequality. Had long stretches of unemployment

Tyler Perry - suffered from physical and sexual abuse as a child. was broke and homeless, living in his car

Oprah Winfrey - Mother was a teenager. Raised by her grandmother in a rural poverty

Jay Z - Raised by mother after father left. exposed to a life of drug dealers and crime

Robert L. Johnson - 1 of 10 children raised in the segregated south, struggled to get by working on his family's meager farm

All of these people of color struggled with hardship and are now billionaires.

4

u/tar4heels2fan 16h ago

Lmfao completely delusional. Ive seen it attained by people of every color. Its attainable by people who are willing to humble themselves.. seek help.. accept instruction and change.

-1

u/Famous_Phase_7829 16h ago

Of course you have!!

-1

u/Georgina_Sweet 18h ago

Ni un pareció, IA 10%

-1

u/Traditional_Brain_51 14h ago

I remember when Lord Jamar said that white guys could dust themselves off and be great because of white privilege ….almost every white guy in the comments was mad and tried to disagree….😂😂😂😂😂

-3

u/I_HopeThat_WasFart 18h ago

is he paying his fair share now though?

-3

u/shoqman 18h ago

So, unemployable. But great glowup!
