A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Yearly "preventative" skin cancer screening

Had a fun thing happen after going in for my first ever "yearly preventative skin cancer screening" with the dermatologist. Ended up getting a bill for $51 after insurance did whatever it does. I call Anthem to confirm that they do in face pay for a yearly skin cancer screening. Call the dermatologist and explain there may be a mistake because Anthem pays for this visit and asked if it could be re-coded. I was informed that these yearly preventative skin cancer screenings can only be done by a primary care physician and that any visit to a dermatologist is considered "specialty" and thus not considered "preventative." Yeah... let's go to my PCP who isn't a skin specialist and let them do my skin cancer screening. Anyway... TIL, I guess.

[FL] Umbrella policy– State Farm is $450/yr plus needing to increase my auto limits to @$250k from $100/$300k which means another $80/mo. Net would be $1410 increase yearly for $1M policy. Do other 3rd party carriers make you raise auto limits as think they are $4-500 yearly for just umbrella?

Business use

I just started a new job where I have to drive to client’s homes for a nonprofit. I will not be transporting clients. Does this fall under business use on a personal policy or do I need a commercial policy?

I’m in a moral debate after a minor car accident and would love advice

Yesterday I was in stop-and-go traffic on the freeway. The cars in front of me came to a complete stop, so I came to a complete stop, and while I was fully stopped a semi truck love-tapped my rear bumper. There’s some small paint damage as well as a penny sized dent on the tailgate, but that’s it. One auto body shop took the bumper cover off to check underneath and didn’t see any structural damage.

My moral conundrum is this: the driver pleaded to pay for it privately because he has 4 kids and can’t afford for his insurance to go up. All the estimates I got were $1500-$2000 to replace the bumper cover and tailgate. I’m not sure what to do, because I feel shallow asking him to fork over $2k over a penny sized dent, and some scratches that could likely be buffed out. At the same time, I’m worried about there being any problems down the line. I’ll be filing an accident report later today but not sure if I should contact insurance or make any claims or how much to ask from the driver. I feel like I’m essentially choosing if I care more about my car’s minor scratches or this guy raising his family

Life Insurance Company wants to put life insurance payout into their account, would a check be better?

My father passed away a little over a month ago. He didn’t have a will so we’ve been dealing with a lot of things we know nothing about.

We have contacted his employer and they gave us life insurance information so we were able to get in contact with the company. They have an option to payout the policy into a secure account with their own partnered bank or something. It seems like it’s basically a savings account that has interest and we’d be given a checkbook where we could withdraw whenever.

The other option is just the whole lump sum in a check that we just cash to our own bank. I’m not sure if there’s a right answer here? I’m not sure if we should just compare interest rates to our bank? Just check if the bank is FDIC insured? From what I can tell life insurance isn’t taxable but the interest on it is?? Is that even true? Are there other aspects to consider?

United Health Care pediatric dentist

I live in Austin. When I look on the UHC app for a pediatric dentist with the filter set to 100 mile radius, there is one covered dentist in Austin, and one in San Antonio, which is a 2 hour drive.

Am I doing something wrong? I will be shocked if there truly is one covered dentist for a metro-area with a population of ~3 million people.

Is my car totaled?

I think the c-pillar might be done for. Would really appreciate any insights/advice as the other driver (police said he was at fault) is underinsured and we're concerned about repair costs. Thanks in advance.

Question About Member Benefit and Eligibility Summary

I'm getting some orthodontics and during my consultation, I was shown a Member Benefit and Eligibility Summary from my dental plan that says I qualify for $1,500 worth of coverage. I moved forward with treatment. Then the insurance company (UnitedHealthcare) denied me saying my plan actually doesn't have an ortho benefit. I checked my plan with my employer, and I don't think my plan does have this benefit, but the summary directly from the insurance company says I qualify.

Do Member Benefit and Eligibility Summaries mean anything? Are they airtight? Should they be on the hook for this? Am I?

Claims Related BCBS Providers (Anthem/ Elevance Health ) Enough is enough.

I keep seeing therapists and other behavioral health providers posting about the same things: stagnant reimbursement rates, clawbacks, audits, recoupments, credentialing problems, and appeals that go nowhere.

I think we need one place to start collecting these experiences by state.

If you’ve dealt with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, Elevance, Horizon, or another Blue plan, share:

* Your state

* Your profession

* Which Blue plan

* Your reimbursement rate, if you’re comfortable sharing it

* Whether you were hit with a clawback or recoupment

* How far back they went

* What happened when you appealed

The goal isn’t to harass anyone. It’s to document what providers are experiencing and make sure the executives running these companies, state insurance regulators, and elected representatives actually hear about it.

I also think we should start respectfully emailing the CEO or state president of each Blue plan, our state insurance regulator, and our state representatives.

The message can be simple:

Enough. Behavioral health providers are providing legitimate, medically necessary care. Reimbursement rates need to reflect the actual cost of providing that care. Excessive or years-later clawbacks can financially destabilize clinicians and practices. If there is a legitimate problem with a claim, providers deserve a fair, timely, and transparent audit and appeal process.

Fair rates. Fair audits. Fair process.

One provider speaking up is easy to ignore.

Hundreds or thousands of us documenting the same problems across different states is much harder to dismiss.

If you’ve had an experience with BCBS/Anthem/ Elevance, share it.

Home Insurance Homeowner Claim - Adjuster Quoting Dramatically Higher Cost of Repair than Contractor

Tree fell on the house. Biggest driver is that insurance adjuster is quoting that I need to replace my entire roof (vs. Repairing a small section) due to my shingles being discontinued. I just replaced the roof in December and the shingles are not discontinued. I explained this to adjuster and he said we determined the shingle is discontinued and that's that.

Am I actually entitled to the excess claim money if I'm able to complete the repairs for materially less than the claim amount? Any issues if I don't complete the exact repairs quoted by the adjuster?

Wife has liability insurance in NyC and crashed totaling the car on a guardrail. No other cars involved no major injuries but did go to the hospital. Does it HAVE to be reported to the insurance we’re not getting money anyway?

How do I meet the gap between repairs and insurance payout?

Hello!

I lost quite a bit of my house in a fire. It's not a total loss but damn near close, and the repairs are about projected to be about 100k over what insurance can pay (like max payout). What happens now? Would a HELOC help cover the difference? Do we just sell someone the plot of land with no house on it? What am I supposed to do in this situation and theoretically keep the house, if possible?

Health Insurance Insurance/Doctor Office Miscommunication

Looking for some advice on what to do. Sorry, this is a long one! I was scheduled for a spinal fusion on September 11th. I received a call on Monday, August 31st from the providers office that the insurance denied the claim due to there not being enough information. Providers office told me the deadline for a peer to peer was expired and they’d need to file an appeal. They also said that they have a new office system and the fax the insurance sent over got “lost in the system”. I call insurance and they say that there wasn’t enough information sent over. Okay, fine. Call the providers office back and reiterate what insurance said.
September 1st, providers office calls me to follow up and say they want to push the surgery date back cause they’re worried the appeal won’t go through in time. I’m pissed, call insurance again to find out what’s going on because I do NOT want to move the surgery date. This time, insurance tells me that they don’t want to pay for inpatient care after surgery. Okay, fine. I ask the insurance what can be done to get this fixed as soon as possible, they say sign a document allowing the providers office to appeal on my behalf, send it to the provider, tell them to mark it as urgent when sending it back to insurance. I fill it out, and my husband faxes it off to the provider.

Next morning, I call the provider and relay the information from the insurance side. They move the surgery date anyways, still worried about the appeal not going through. I also asked if we can change the inpatient to outpatient observation to get insurance to cover it and if (god forbid) I have complications, we can move to inpatient and insurance will have no choice BUT to cover it. Now it’s moved to September 15th.
Now it’s September 3rd and I left a voicemail in my providers direct mailbox to follow up again. I call the insurance and now they tell me that there’s 21 calendar days to schedule a peer to peer and insurance sent it off on August 17th. Of course, it’s the 3rd, a holiday weekend is coming up, Monday is Labor Day and the deadline for the peer to peer availability. If the first insurance rep I spoke to had told me this on the 31st, it would have been potentially approved by now and I can continue prepping for major surgery and not be completely stressed out. I understand the providers office has a new system, but if you know you’re having issues receiving critical documents pertaining to a major surgery, be extra vigilant. Having a new system is absolutely not an excuse for this kind of major miscommunication. I should not have to advocate for myself between my insurance and providers office when they should be doing it FOR me. Unfortunately, this is the reality of insurances in the United States and it’s absolutely unacceptable.
I’m sorry it’s such a long explanation, I’m frustrated and at the end of my rope on what to do. I appreciate any advice that is given, thank you!

Health Insurance Health Insurance Renewal Scam?

I got a call from a person claiming himself to be renewal Agent from CARE health insurance and was asking me to port my parents health insurance currently with Niva Bupa to CARE. He had all the details of the policy including coverage, DOB of my parents, renewal bonus of current policy etc. He shared his i card which I can't ascertain if it was genuine or no. Next, after 30 min or so, I got a call from an executive claiming to be from Niva Bupa renewal team. He mentioned that there has been a revision in exclusion list and Niva Bupa has stopped cashless facility for six months due to some regulatory issues. Which renewal agent will begin with an opening that this issue is present and this cashless thing has never been communicated by mail or SMS from Niva Bupa which they should if such regulatory things are in picture. Now the CARE guy is following up with me for renewal. Has anyone come across this issue? Plus I'm worried for the data privacy. Who leaked all this data? Niva Bupa? Policybazaar?

No contact but I caused someone to run off the road. I am so stupid. Did I do the right thing by stopping and providing information?

No contact. I didn't hit the biker. They had right of way as i was making a left turn. It was dark and i didn't notice the bike's light until I turned left. I swear I thought it was a small light on the distance. I braked as soon as I noticed and the biker swerved to avoid me and they ran off into a ditch. I stopped to check on them and I provided my number. I apologized profusely and offered to pay for any damages and injuries. Was that the right thing to do? Or did I just implicate myself? Biker's ankle hurt but was able to ride the bike to a safer spot to wait for someone to pick them up. Not sure of any witnesses, but someone else stopped to check on the situation. Biker did not blame me but i feel like shit. It was early in the morning and I felt so terrible and just wanted to make things right. I am so stupid and blind.

Do I need life insurance?

I (41M excellent health) just got married to 26F.

- No children and will not be having any
- Renting, but would like to buy a house in the next 10-15 years as I get closer to retirement
- Two paid off cars in good condition
- No debt
- I have ~$300k between ROTH IRA and ROTH 401k
- Wife has no significant assets coming into the marriage
- HHI is about $115k with me making $80k.
- $50k no cost life insurance policy through my employer
- Wife is on my health insurance plan through work
- Wife likely doesn’t have much higher income potential. She’s an immigrant still learning English without professional skills.
- Wife says she would likely go back to her home country if I die young, and my retirement money would make her very comfortable there

NC Progressive policy — would a minor California accident qualify for the SDIP no-points exception?

Hi all, I’m trying to understand how NC SDIP would apply to a minor at-fault accident.

The car is insured under a North Carolina Progressive policy, but the accident happened while the car was temporarily in California. It was a very minor door-ding type accident, nobody was injured, and Progressive told us the estimated damage to the other car is around $1,200.

There was no moving-violation conviction, and the policyholder/household has no other recent at-fault accidents or violations.

Would this still be evaluated under North Carolina SDIP at renewal even though the accident happened in California? And if the total property damage stays under the NC threshold, would this likely qualify for the no-points exception and avoid an accident-related surcharge?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I got overpaid on my claim check…what do I do?

I submitted a claim for water damage to my furniture on my renters insurance policy.

I submitted photos with name brands and age and cost of the items all to truth.

They had a company come out and inspect everything.

I just got the total loss of everything and they rung my tumble brand rug in (about $300) as a pottery barn rug that’s $3,000.

So my check is a lot more than I expected.

Since this is a mistake on their end…can they take backsies? Or am I good to go lol?

I told the truth. Is this my good karma?
