Start tapering off if you can. If you're in that deep medical intervention is your friend. Detox/rehab/hospital. You don't want to go cold turkey alone.
I did step 2 for a long while as well. i feel this comment in a lighthearted agreement haha. I keep finding my way back and this time i basically want tl stay
Mine was heroin withdrawal/detoxing cold turkey from a gram+ a day IV habit. It's essentially like getting the worst flu you can ever imagine, and multiply it by 10. I didn't eat for nine days. Only water. Shitting and puking at the same time, sitting in the bathroom for a full 12 hours straight, crying because it won't stop. And then being so sore that you can only trudge 20 feet maximum without collapsing. I think Trainspotting gave a lot of people the wrong idea of heroin withdrawal. It doesn't last a few days only; in reality, it can last weeks. Mine lasted, I would estimate, a full 20 days before I felt somewhat normal. But you're just depleted by the end of it. And would you believe that even after all that, I still went back to the drug? Several times, in fact.
Finally I just went the suboxone route; I'm not kidding when I say it's one of the most important drugs on the planet. Especially the injectio version, Sublocade. One injection per month for six months, and your body just naturally comes off the opioids because the injection creates a hardened ball of buprenorphine (the actual drug name) under the skin of the stomach that just slowly releases. Your body just naturally then comes off the opioids.
Alcoholism is one of the worst physical addictions, but add societal norms and pressures and it makes it the worst IMO. I'm not trying to be insensitive about other addictions but even nicotine isn't as publicly acceptable as it used to be. Getting through the physical part of addiction is extremely difficult and many die from it, but also, rewiring your brain when your triggers are everywhere is another type of pain that's really hard to enunciate.
It's such a sliding scale. I've been a great enjoyer of substances my whole life, so I've been addicted to pretty much everything except opiates (deliberately steered clear of them, because I wouldn't want to be an addict).
I had a nasty coke habit that I was able to kick relatively easily, because I just stopped going to coke bars and stopped hanging out with my coke friends, and I accomplished that by smoking an insane amount of weed, so I was too stoned to even leave the house. Drugs saved me from drugs!
It’s fun. I’m doing it right now, quietly. Still having a tall boy to calm the nerves, but I know with how much I WAS drinking, the dts would be even worse. On top of stopping the 10 bear a night regimen, I also cut thc cold turkey. I’m a fucking mess but nobody knows.
r/stopdrinking is a dope sub too! One of us! One of us! But sincerely, good for you. I was a daily, all day drinker for years. 2+ years sober from alcohol and fentanyl. You can do it!!!
I work in a medical detox. It’s no joke, my patients come through at death’s door. Please do NOT try to go cold turkey on your own, ever. Go to the ER or a detox center. We’re not judging you, we genuinely care about you and want you not to die!
I was waiting for this.
Detox then severe withdrawals, the puking bile is so painful, I thought I was going to tear my esophagus.
Couldn’t even drink water and hold it down.
Light bursts in my eyes, shaking.
Worst I have ever felt - physically and psychologically. It’s like you’re going through the worst flu you can ever have and at the same time experiencing intense emotional distress and crazy anxiety. Medical intervention helps.
Ya... I'm not looking forward to it. I detoxed off fent/tranq in jail and wanted to die. Now I have a massive drinking habit I need to kick and I know that's gonna be way worse
Come join us at r/stopdrinking :) yeah, it sucks, but I couldn’t have done it without that sub I kid you not. Tons of amazing advice, and when you want to scream about it, come on and we will scream with you.
I appreciate the offer. I'm not quite ready yet and when I do make the leap I'm going to detox and AA meetings. Not my first time around and I feel screaming at actual people helps more then screaming into the Internet
Haha fair enough :) everyone has their own way! I scroll it at night before bed, and read people’s stories. Helps me keep a clear head, but we are all very different. Sending love to ya
appreciate the concern, luckily I'm not in a terrible spot, I'm miles above where I was at 5 years ago coming out of jail for drugs. Unfortunately I got a job that kinda encourages drinking and allows me to drink as much as I want for free. I'm just getting tired of it, haven't had a sober thought in the past 4 years.
I’m with you. I used to be BAD bad bad. Like non stop morning till night. I’m in the wine industry, and have endless amounts of free booze at all times. I talk about it all day, around it all day, and it’s all I’ve worked in for 15 years. I can’t talk about my sobriety with hardly anyone I really know, hence why anonymous Reddit helps me personally
DTs are fucking terrifying. I was drinking anywhere from half a 1.75l of whiskey a day to a full 1.75l. Quit cold turkey cause no money left. When the DTs hit, my friend grabbed me a couple twelve packs of beer and basically kept me under watch and fed me a beer every now and again to help ease out of it too severely.
yeah this is the worst i think i could imagine. ive gone cold turkey of h and fent but i didnt fear dying as I would have if it were alcohol or benzos. but still. heroin wds is hell and I cant imagine worse.
This is mine as well. So sick that the only thing that works is more. Been sober 4-5 months. I feel like it’s for good this time. I’m happy I’m free again. I know you know what I mean.
Alcohol withdrawals are one of the few types of withdrawal that can actually kill you. They suck so bad especially when you’ve relapsed and know what you’re in for when you try to stop again
On the flip side the first time I gave myself alcohol poisoning. I felt like I got beat by baseball bats over my whole body for the a week. First spent an eternity on the floor in and out of consciousness while puking bile between bouts of dry-heaving that felt like someone was ripping my intestines out through my mouth. It was a spectrum of awful like I'd never experienced before. I was certain I was dying and didn't care because it was awful. I had no idea that's what it was until much later when my addiction counselor was like "my man, that's what we call alcohol poisoning."
This makes me sad. My mum lost her partner to this and it was horrible to see. He never kicked the habit and I can’t imagine how much it would have hurt.

Detoxing from an insane level of Alcoholism.
