I know someone who knows a reform voter who went to protest against migrant boats just because brown people were coming off them. He doesn’t care if they’re white people immigrating into the country, that’s fine for him, purely just doesn’t want brown or black people in the country.

I’m not defending him at all, I despise the fella, but I think the average person just doesn’t compute why this is an issue.
I worry that a lot of people just assume raising money for your party is part of your job and they don’t get bogged down in the details of why this is wrong.
I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think this will move the needle too much with the bloke on the street sadly.
138
u/emamayxo 14h ago
I think people just want him to win cause they’re racist and will not look at this at all
28
u/AtLeastImLaughing 14h ago
Yeah there’s that too.
I think his fans will just brush it off because they gave up their morals long ago, and the others flirting with him will do the same and give their classic ‘they all do it’ response.
26
u/TropoMJ 14h ago
It is like Trump. He's "their guy" and there isn't really anything he can do that they don't consider acceptable. But if someone who wasn't "their guy" did something 1% as egregious, they'd be outraged. Realistically as long as they get someone in power who claims to share their views, there isn't really a limit to how provably awful that person can be.
→ More replies (1)9

Once you vote for someone you have identified with them. You're "on their team". Cognitive dissonance means that now, if they get caught being a liar or a fraud, by extension you're on the "liars and frauds" team.
You don't like that, because you think of yourself as a common-or-garden racist/bigot, not a liar or a fraud. You don't want to consider the fact you might have been duped, because that would call into question your superior intellect.
So what does your brain do?
Lovely mental gymnastics until you twist this around and make EVERYONE a crook. Then your crook isn't actually a crook, he's just USING THE SYSTEM to fight those other crooks (who like brown people). They must be worse, because they're inviting asylum seekers to live in your attic (or whatever shite they believe)...
It's very hard to change a mind.

u/_coyotes_ 12h ago
The ideology isn’t supposed to make sense, so much of it is counterintuitive and contradictory on purpose. We see this happening with far right movements around the globe, no matter how bad things get or the things they do that goes against what they claim to support or hard they fail, you always rally around the “strongman leader” and you never ever waiver. It doesn’t matter to them how much you poke holes in their logic, in their thinking, in how many times you expose the person they support for being terrible. They obediently follow, like the sheep they proclaim everyone else to be. Someday, we’ll have to actually have an actual conversation and make actual plans to eliminate this type of ideology from positions of power altogether because getting the unreasonable to see reason hasn’t worked for the last 10 years.

They don’t care about anything other than the immigration policies - simple as that. farridge could be a murderer and they would t care
6
u/Capable_Kiwi2514 11h ago
People need to be déprogramméd from seeing politicians as being in "their team" --- any politicians --- and view them as employees to be monitored.
It's the idea of sticking up for "your side" that's the problem, when "your side" is actually the everyday citizen.
5
u/PeaGravy 14h ago
Because people want politicians with agency, even if they’re corrupt. That’s possibly the reason Andy Burnham is garnering so much excitement at the moment.
5
u/sami2503 13h ago
Thats the thing, they dont see it. Their feed is a bunch of right wing ragebait which then makes them angry and vote against their interests. As soon as a brown person commits a crime it's straight to their feed. They dont see any of the class war stuff, just the culture war and immigration stuff.

Gammons are fuming and Russian bots are blowing their circuits as we speak. This is nothing short of a watershed moment in British politics and I can’t get a bag of popcorn big enough. It’s also a prime example of why the greatest English language comedy ever written (which, as we all know, is still The Thick of It) could never be written again.
235
u/Artificial-Brain 14h ago
I really hope so but I just don't see many reform voters actually caring about this. Unless legal action is taken against him then I don't see this changing much.
These people stand for absolutely nothing.
110
u/Midlandsofnowhere 13h ago
This isn't slap on the wrist stuff.
Ed Davey has apparently written to both the police and the electoral commission asking them to investigate.
Farage may not go down for this, but if they have to open the books for a criminal investigation I can only begin to guess what other shady, shady stuff they'll find.

Well that all sounds very positive to me. One way or another we need to keep grifting US bootlickers out of UK politics.
30
u/PieceMaterial5213 12h ago
The backlash against Trump politics has sure benefitted Canada. We were on track to electing likely the worst Prime Minister and least qualified parliament ever. Trump made people (enough anyway) come to their senses. And the number of trade deals with other countries and the level of support for Canadian companies and development projects, the military, etc. has been wonderful.
Sometimes it helps having a walking shit stain in the midst as people realize they don't want to live with that smell. If only some Americans hadn't burned out their sense of smell from a life of sniffing Fox "News" and the like.
193
u/quick_justice 14h ago
Reform doesn’t have enough core to win, and nobody who isn’t core will vote for them after this.
Plus some of the things on the video are not just illegal but criminal, and UK unlike US doesn’t like criminal politicians.
I think he’s truly cooked.
53
u/Artificial-Brain 14h ago
I'm super hopeful that he is in fact cooked. I guess we just have to hope that legal action is taken and that their core base is smaller than they like to make out.
23
u/quick_justice 13h ago
In this very video he says that sadly they don't have residential donors in UK, just corporate ones.

Is the cult of personality around Farage as big and insane as the one around Trump?
30
26
u/aaarry 13h ago
No way, but it’s probably as close as we’re going to get to that shitshow. I personally always find it really amusing when Americans celebrate Trump’s approval rating falling to below 45% as if that isn’t twice as high as reform are currently polling in the UK.
Pluralism is a beautiful thing.
11
5
u/sharedcarepain 13h ago
It's not as big in terms of % I think compared to trump, but I think people are underestimating how ossified some people's brains are in the UK.
We've got a good 30-40% that don't share a common reality and are enjoying being racist and cruel. We need a deradicalisation program.
5
u/jl2352 11h ago
There is also a lot of secondary things. Farage doesn’t have the same cult as Trump does with MAGA. Before this investigation Farage has had people challenge him, and there have been rumours of people inside Reform being tired of him.
This investigation could push Reform towards a civil war. It also financially hurts them, and parties need finances to operate campaigns.
This has many layers of damage for Farage.
17
u/haversack77 13h ago
Dodgy Nige's party is riddled with dirty, dirty foreign money. What a scam. Reform are dead in the water.

u/aaarry 13h ago

The man is a privately-educated stockbroker turned career politician from a wealthy family and who has hosted a regular TV show on a major news channel. I’m not sure if it’s possible for Farage to be any more of a part of the establishment”.

In a meeting over oysters and wine in his Clacton constituency, Mr Farage met with the undercover team in late July after the three polls had been published and paid for. He believed them to be “William” and his father. Mr Farage said the polling was “amazing” and provided “bang for buck,” adding: “It worked. Boom.”
