Was reportedly the dinner party for the 55th birthday of Aleksandr Chayko, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces. He is "accused by the Ukrainian government of organizing massacres in Bucha and other towns around Kyiv during 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine".
The birthday boy was not hurt.

The US also warned Russia of an imminent attack targeting large gatherings (including concerts) in Moscow. Several other western nations also released warnings for their citizens in Moscow. That warning was 2 weeks before the attack and just 3 days before the attack Putin dismissed the warning saying something along the lines "the west is trying to blackmail us and these warnings aren't real".
Even Iran allegedly warned Russia of a planned terrorist operation.

in part because people had some kind of sympathy and then russia inevitably said it was ukraine, they just couldn’t stop themselves for a second to not try to demonize the country they invaded. at that point, i think most people just stopped caring outside of russia. in russia they were marinated well in it.

So maybe it really was an ukrainian assassination.
... then again, if that general really died, and since the russian air defense didn't really defend as well as the russians probably hoped, it might have been a retirement party sponsored by mother russia. Who knows.

Some Context - Allegedly the target was Alexander Chayko, Commander of the Russian Aerospace Force. Multiple attendants of the closed event are in serious condition apart from the 3 dead. Chayko would have been the highest ranked general assassinated in the Russia Ukraine War as he is a colonel general ( just under field marshal). The general wasn’t killed.

I don't remeber the exact details, but some time before the Ukraine war, some russian intelligence units sent commands to a couple of their field operatives to gather supplies for an espionage operation like burner phones and fake ids.
One of the items they specified was sim cards, you know to change out the id of phones, but as the field operatives gathered the supplies they misinterpreted the instructions and bought several copies of the Sims video games.
They proudly took a picture of their espionage kit, which unfortunatly for them got leaked to western media ridiculing them as a clown show.
You can easily google the story, it was pretty funny at the time.

I have some family members that were in the intelligence business in the 60s. Two of them went on vacation to Italy. And every day there would be two people following them. But the weird thing was every thirty minutes one of them would walk close to them and the other took a picture. In day 3 my relatives did a couple of quick turns in narrow alley ways, grabbed the two and asked them what they were doing. They understood the following part, but what about the 30 minutes photos? They ended up explaining that they worked at the Romanian consulate and were working for the KGB, but they would only get paid if they could proof they actually worked. They shared a couple of beers and kept the process up until the vacation was over. So weird amateurish things are not really new

APCs? Russian troops fired thermobaric rockets at the school. Not even some conspiracy, Russia quite quickly acknowledged using Shmels.
I remember that school siege vividly, it was incredibly tragic and it was the first time I realized what a ruthless leader Putin was. The Nord-Ost situation initially looked like an unintentionally botched rescue, Beslan made it clear that the main goal was to kill all the terrorists, even if that meant tank shooting into a building full of children.
The better memory from that is the heroic Major Perov. A special forces commander and one of the Russians who did his best to save lives. He led a squad tasked with getting kids out and died after jumping onto a grenade one of the terrorists threw at the kids. A great hero that his brutal dictatorship of a country didn't deserve.

The only real recruitment method they have left to recruit Russian men is to draft youths from major cities that are the center of Putin's power.
Putin doesn't want to do this as it weakens his powerbase/image.
