Putin was trying to put the Russian Empire back together.

Turns out, the former parts of the Russian Empire need Putin less than he needs them.

It's as if Putin doesn't realize that they know that if Ukraine falls, they are next.

When the last standing part of the USSR tells you to stop trying to bring back the USSR it’s saying something.

u/UpsetKoalaBear Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

It’s an attempt to create some form of Eurasian union and push back against the “West”.

Russia’s whole plan was written by Aleksandr Dugin back in 1997. They’ve succeeded in a lot of their goals in there (such as the isolation of the UK from Europe, the war in Ukraine and Georgia, instability and separatism in the US and a push towards isolationism).

In 2015, Putin addressed the Russian government by pushing the idea of a “Great Eurasian Partnership” of which Kazakhstan and Tokayev was supportive of.

In 2023, the Russian government published a paper titled “The Concept of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation” which further pushed the idea of an Eurasian dominance over the “Global South” (Africa, Latin America, and the Islamic world) and working with China and India to succeed.

This has been a goal of Russia for decades. Many political writers have pointed out that this has been happening for a while. Whilst Kazakhstan is saying this now, they are still firmly on the side of Russia’s overarching goals.

Interesting. How is the war in Ukraine listed under successes?

11

u/LantaExile Jul 26 '26

I think that's counting "Ukraine (except Western Ukraine) should be annexed by Russia" as a work in progress that's almost done. Though I think that may be counting the chickens before they hatch.

They never were going to create some Eurasian dominance but they would have been a big player in it had they simply organically expanded their economy. That came to a halt in 2014 when they took Crimea. More so, the recent expansion of their aggression in Ukraine has pretty much decimated any chance of Russia being a significant power. Those days are gone.

26

u/wbruce098 Jul 26 '26

This. Russia is still a strong nation, but clearly far less strong than it sees itself. No one respects them anymore except a handful of right wing loonies who, we are seeing out west where I’m at, only know how to bring hurt and shame to a country.

16

u/FlipZip69 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

They have lost so much wealth and influence that it will be generations till they can return to some level of real strength. To be sure they are a force but they will be beholden to China for a long time and there is no future where they ever have some level of dominance over any real nations.

The biggest risk is Russia does have nuclear weapons. It is extremly unlikely Putin does that or even has the power to use it but it is not zero risk either. But I also suspect Putin has limited options and his time in power might be coming to an end. Within 5 years to be sure. But there will be more after him and Russia could turn into an even worse mob controlled state.

I saw a documentary that showed how wanting Ukraine has been basically a pathological obsession for him for decades. From the trauma of the collapse of the Soviet Union to the existential denial of the idea that Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians have separate histories, cultures, and identities.

Edit: try this one. Right around the time I remember: https://www.pbs.org/video/putins-road-to-war-ggv39p/

u/ataylor8049 Jul 25 '26

Yeah I think this seems accurate. Putin visited George W Bush’s Texas ranch after 9/11. Bush commented later that Putin turned to him in complete seriousness and said, “you do know that Ukraine is not a country.”

428

u/The_Council_Juice Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 30 '26

They call it The Ukraine in Russia (or at least in the international theatre) because they consider it a region. Not the nation of Ukraine. (There is no Russian for "the" as such)

Its why you should have the important distinction between the 2 and Ukraine asked other nations to not prefix with "the"

Prefixing with The is insulting to Ukrainians. Not that anyone here has. Just a snippet. Lol

230

u/OhGodImHerping Jul 25 '26

Fascinating. I was raised learning that Ukraine was its own country, but that everyone basically called it The Ukraine anyway. Where I grew up, no one corrected you and most people also said “The Ukraine.” It wasn’t until I was in college did I learn how incorrect and insulting it was.

62

u/SnooChipmunks2079 Jul 25 '26

I learned that within the last five years. Always assumed it was like “The Hague.”

6

u/No_Amount_7886 Jul 25 '26

156

u/The_Council_Juice Jul 25 '26

By calling it The Ukraine its considered a way to legitimise Russias claim to it.

As there's no word for "The" in Russian there's no other reason to do this.

65

u/Quality-Pkg-Goods Jul 25 '26

Super curious about all this, have also heard “the Ukraine” and never thought critically about it.

So what do they call it in Russia if there is no word for “the?”

Is there some other way to differentiate between Ukraine/region and Ukraine/nation in Russian?

103

u/Xx_Little_Marco_xX Jul 25 '26

Yes, there is in the way that it’s referred to in the Russian prepositional case. “в Украини” vs “на Украине”. Ending with an “e” implies it to be a region within Russia (the Ukraine) whereas ending with an “и” implies it to be its own entity, more or less. There was much debate over this in the late Soviet period. Even without articles, the differing declensions of the word in the prepositional case can imply different things.

u/SPECTR_Eternal Jul 25 '26

In Russian, if you were to say "in Russia" you'd say "в России" ("vyh Rohsseeye"), the "в" part means "in" and it's used for all other countries except Ukraine.

Since Soviet times, the "norm" was to say "on Ukraine", in Russian it's "на Украине", the "на" part means "on". It's lingustically wrong, yet it was always "an exception" from the rules to say it like this.

THAT'S the "the" part in Russian. If you say "на Украине" (pronounced "nah Ookraeeny") you say like the Soviets and Putin wants it. Unironically saying like it should be pronounced - "vyh Ookraeeny" ("в Украине") gets you weird looks from older people. Younger folks who are closer to the internet and further from the TV seem to get it now

I think in Russian it’s “Ukraine Region”

→ More replies (3)

11

u/Spirited_Ingenuity89 Jul 25 '26

They have a prepositional way to make the distinction in Russian (using на instead of в), but using “the” is a common way to indicate a region in English, so it’s just the anglicized way of communicating the Russian political perspective.

Ukraine is the original Kievan Rus. Russia is Muscovia. When muscovia took over Kiyv they also stole a lot of the history and based it on them being the real “Rus” or “Russia” So you see, Moscow rulers being absolute leeches didn’t start recently, it’s sort of their whole business model.

Us old folks will still inadvertently say “The” Ukraine in conversation because that’s how we learned about the region in middle school history & geography classes. For many, the breakup of the Soviet Union didn’t occur until university years or well after.

My two younger friends who were born in Ukraine give me an eyeroll but understand I have no ill intent. Even though I make a conscious effort to drop the “the”, one will still slip out once in a while. 🥴

Ukraine is where the original Slavic state started. Kievan Rus’ was the first truly powerful Slavic state, and it was centered around Kiev. It was Volodymyr the Great (a Ukrainian) who converted to Orthodox Christianity in the late 900s. Muscovy didn’t even exist yet.

Putin sees Ukraine as an existential threat to Russia because most of Slavic prehistory of is actually Ukrainian. In other words, Russians are the backwards peasants that broke off from the titular group, not the Ukrainians (which is the common sentiment among Russians towards Ukrainians). It’s as if Americans viewed themselves as the original English-speaking world power and attacked the UK for copying American democracy (not a perfect analogy, but you get the gist).

I was in Ukraine when they because a separate nation. Gorbachev was in Kiev “under the table” while there were massive demonstrations in the streets.

Two weeks earlier we were at a concert (dances and Russian music). At the end of the concert, the people (all Ukrainian) in the audience stood up and flew the Ukrainian flag and sang the Ukrainian national anthem.

They could have been arrested and thrown in prison for that.

We were special guests of Ukraine, so attended and were hosted at many events.

I learned how to say, “Ukraine is beautiful, the food is delicious, your program is amazing, and thank you” in Ukrainian. (The driver taught me.)

It was illegal to speak Ukranian! The children (now college age) only spoke Russian!

It all changed so fast, in weeks, it seemed.

But changing from saying “The Ukraine“ to just “Ukraine” was very hard!

It had been “The Ukraine (region)” for decades.

The fact the Putin refused, since Ukraine’s independence in 1991, to call it “Ukraine” shows a very strong resistance to the separation of the Soviet Union, and what Putin’s ultimate goals are. To put the Soviet Union back together. At all cost.

This does look weird. You've got the biggest country in the world, most of it is perfectly livable, but either not used or in a state of decay. Why do you need more?

18

u/DavidlikesPeace Jul 25 '26

In fairness, no. Much of Russia isn't nice land.

Siberia is not perfectly livable. Neither the cold nor soil make it susceptible to large populations without major investments that Russia's elite don't want to make.

Better to just conquer nicer places like Crimea. What's the worst that could happen?

15

u/Lunar_BriseSoleil Jul 25 '26

Most of Siberia is fairly temperate. What westerners think of as Siberia is really the Russian Far East.

Ukraine is Europe's bread basket, has a warm water port at Sevastopol and is a buffer state between Russia and the EU/NATO. Three very useful things to Russia.

Putin's plan wasn't that bad to be fair, he'd seen the world turn a blind eye to Georgia and Crimea, why would Ukraine have been different? If they managed to take an airport near Kyiv as planned, Ukraine would probably be Belarus 2.0 by now.

6

u/JoebyTeo Jul 25 '26

Why would it be different? Exactly the reasons you state. Europe has no great stake in Georgia, but Russia invading a country that fronts onto the European Union — threatening to put tanks up against Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary? That was never going to fly. He overplayed his hand because he — like many strongman leaders — mistook European consensus for weakness.

So the way russia is set up, which was done by the Tsar, then the Soviets and now Putin, is that everything flows through Moscow or St Petersburg. Every rail line, every road and anything that is important must go into Moscow and then be sent out. This is done so that the other regions in russia are dependent on Moscow. This ensures that no group can revolt.

It’s not even a function of Putin but of Russia itself. Since Ivan the Terrible, whenever Russia was strong it expanded, and when it was weak it contracted. Rinse, repeat. It’s happened one way or another close to 50 times.

Maybe he should have gone after the easier parts first. Georgia and Kazakhstan would always have been easier than opening a front on the border of NATO and the EU in the 45th largest country on earth. Or gone for the Union State with Belarus which wouldn’t have required a war.

I don’t think reforming the empire was necessarily the goal. There were many easier options here. Pretty sure he just wanted to stop NATO expansion and thought he could stomp on it in a couple weeks and have the subject never become an issue again.

19

u/DHooligan Jul 25 '26

He did invade Georgia, and it was easier, they got away with it without much blowback.

19

u/evilparagon Jul 25 '26

I mean actually winning it. Two puppet states and a still very disloyal Georgia isn’t exactly empire building. This is of course because the goal isn’t really to build a Russian Empire, it’s to establish Russian superiority. Georgia fighting itself due to Russian puppets is advantageous if your goal isn’t to own Georgia.

21

u/daguro Jul 25 '26

Empires have periods of expansion and contraction.

Russia's empire is contracting and Putin is trying to turn that around.

14

u/Lubiebigos Jul 25 '26

I'd even go as far to say that it is falling and not just contracting. And Putin is only hastening that fall by focusing on conquest instead of attempting to fix the country.

He's an absolutely evil psychopath that has causes millions of deaths, ecosystem degridstion and so much suffering.

But we in the West should probably be thanking him, at least geopolitically. Him trying to steal Ukraine has led to Sweden and Finland joining NATO. It's burned through all the legacy weapons Russia inherited from the USSR. He's largely burned through all their cash assets and is pushing the economy into a long term recession.

Him trying to steal his neighbors land also led to Europe largely decoupling from Russian gas, now America makes bank selling LNG to Europe.

He's grinding down his male fighting age population into the ground ensuring Russia will never be able to do much evil again.

I don't think he gives a flying fuck because he's been able to amas more power and control but in a way we in the West should be thanking that asshole.

But it absolutely would be better if Russia just never invaded Ukraine in the first place, even without Finland and Sweden joining NATO.

He means go home, pretend nothing hapenned, and ramp up the industry to prepare the next aggression.

No he means stop trying to advance, attempt to permanently annex land they still hold, silly.

50

u/Nemezis88 Jul 25 '26

I don’t understand why Ukraine should ever cease its efforts to reclaim every inch of its territory. The contested regions will never be safe for Russians.

Why would anyone willingly move into a war zone?

24

u/Phrecki Jul 25 '26

"willingly" might be the key word here, it's not like Putin or his elite care about what the people want

17

u/berru2001 Jul 25 '26

Russia will never be safe. As long as Ukrain doesn't agree on a peace treaty, it is called a war. This means that russian infrastructures are still legit targets.

11

u/LovesRetribution Jul 25 '26

The population is facing a massive crisis. They cant go on forever. Sooner or later they're gonna have to accept some concessions if no outside intervention comes to relief them. It shouldn't be that way, but that's just the reality we're in. Best we can hope for is for these drone attacks to ramp up to the point it does such a significant amount of damage they can sue for peace and get most of what they lost back. Putins stubborn enough that i think he'd let his nation fall before accepting peace without at least some land gained.

Yes, I believe this is exactly what he means. But it's not enough for Putin to just stop now with only what has been stolen from 2022. He can't sell that as justification for the damage done to Russia.

Plus, he's a mad fucker who wants it all.

We all know what he means. But that ship has sailed! I don't think Ukraine is going to stop the relatively low cost drone warfare until the liberate ALL there territory and ensure Russia wont just re-arm and try again.

Given that they explicitly mentioned the Instanbul agreement, which was a nonstarter for Ukraine when they weren’t destroying Russias economy, I’d say, no they don’t mean with reparations, and it’s not a legitimate starting point for any agreement going forward anyway.

This reads more like Kazakhstan catering to some foreign power who isn’t really thinking about Ukraines best interest

Putin tried to pressure Lukashenko into opening a new front in Ukraine after he turned off the transponders like Zelensky asked. The transcripts of the meeting was not made public.

Immediately after, Lukashenko flew to Beijing for an unscheduled meeting with Xi. The transcript of that meeting was released and the subtext implication is that Xi is going to ensure that Lukashenko is protected and stays out of that mess.

Putin is watching in real time how Russia is becoming the beta in this alliance and that he is quickly losing his usefulness. China runs Asia now and Russia is accelerating their own demise.

Tokayev got to uproot and remove his political rivals and then did not end up as a near-helpless puppet to Putin.

Apart from the fact, Russia..Putin... will not agree to a ceasefire at the current contact line... That's would be like a loose his SMO for him. He speculates that the next elections will bring his comrades of right wing politicians in power.

I have mixed emotions.

  1. Russia must not benefit from his deadly cruel invasion, raping..killing..torture..hostile..etc Ukraine citizens.

  2. Freezing the contact line and give Ukraine a time to breath and recover from the dailiy Bombardements would be great.

As a German I don't have the right to suggest anything but to support whatever Ukraine decide.

37

u/KevlarToiletPaper Jul 25 '26

Time to recover for Ukraine is unfortunately a time to regroup for Russia too.

13

u/ineverknewmyfather Jul 25 '26

Ukraine will not stop fighting until russia retreats back to its pre-2014 borders and creates lasting security guarantees Simple as. That might seem like hubris, but nobody—not even the Ukrainian government—can tell the people not to fight.

u/Komrade_Krusher Jul 25 '26

This is exactly the right sentiment: it is a decision of Ukraine and its people. And something tells me they might not be up for freezing the current lines, either. Not now, that momentum has changed so drastically in their favor. It's looking more and more like Russia will be the ones needing time to breath. The winter ist gonna be rough.

In 2013 Putin mentioned 2 countries that never existed and became artificial states reiterating that the split of the USSR was the biggest mistake ever made. Ukraine and Kazakhstan. A year later Crimea got annexed and Ukraine became the target. Kazakhstan got the message and 1 year later, in 2015 they held the highly strategic celebration of the 550th anniversary of the Kazakh Khanate, a strong message to Putin. China's response? Well, President Xi Jinping made a highly symbolic, official state visit to Kazakhstan in May 2015. He emphasized China’s total respect for Kazakhstan's territorial sovereignty and state borders. What did Europe do? Well, while Russia was annexing Crimea, Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and many others held highly lucrative, top-tier positions within Russian state-owned energy giants like Gazprom and Rosneft. Y'all draw the conclusions yourself.

Yeah, but this is coming from a nation that borders Russia, so they can’t say things like that without getting papa Putin angry, and it’s pretty clear nobody wants to deal with dumb stubborn Russia creating a multi-year with their cannon fodder- sorry I mean “conscripts”, and failing to understand when they’ve lost

u/KennyDROmega Jul 25 '26

Holy shit

Combined with the far right's turn towards favoring Ukraine lately, this really might be what undoes Putin.

He's not going anywhere soon, but his enemies will know he can be got.

6

u/Savings-Kick-578 Jul 25 '26

Russia needs food and other resources from Ukraine. However, it has destroyed that relationship. If there was ever a time in modern history where it is now possible to escape the grip of russia, the former satellite nations need to band together as allies and force a treaty between themselves and russia. They also should push for an end to the illegal war. There will never be a better opportunity.

This reminds me of a joke. In Russia a husband and wife are sitting in their car waiting in line for gas. After hours the husband says, “I’ve had enough of this, I’m going to kill Putin!” He leaves and she stays in the vehicle waiting in line. After a couple hours he gets back in the car silently. She asks what happened. He says, “The line to kill him was even longer.”
