OP wants to plant the seed that this is another Luigi situation where someone in the C-suite in a traditionally scummy industry was picked off but really being a VP at a bank is middle management at best.

This wasn't a targeted attack against an executive. The attacker was mentally ill and unfortunately this woman just happened to be in the attacker's path.

Edit: Just realized OP is also the creator and head mod of the sub. Into the trash it goes

Yeah, in financial services, anyone above bank teller is a VP.

74

u/Paradroid888 1d ago

Can confirm. I'm VP for a US financial services firm. I'm actually a software engineer.

29

u/mbdta7000 1d ago

I’m in cyber. That’s how I found out. I lead 100+ person teams and applied for a VP role and they asked my desired compensation. I said $200-250k. We had a good laugh before I was told I needed to be looking at SVP/EVP roles.

u/myaudienceiseveryone 1d ago

I once interviewed a role that offered $120k for vp and my last role before that was senior.

4

u/The-ai-bot 1d ago

She looks so young for a VP

6

u/FireMike_PleaseGod 1d ago

VP in investment banking is normally around 30. So she likely was very young.

Hey - I was an admin assistant and I was an “associate vice president.” Now, how do you like your coffee?

No. She was a corporate lawyer who graduated at the top of her class. B of A is an extremely hard company to get hired for. They only look for the best of the best. She worked hard to get the career she wanted. At give her the dignity of her actual accomplishments. She wasn't middle management and never worked in a branch.

3

u/swstephe 1d ago

I used to work for a really old bank. I was just a lowly software engineer keeping their marketing emails going, but I was given the title "VP", too. I was told it was a tradition of giving impressive titles to employees just to make clients think they were getting special treatment. There were more impressive titles going up the hierarchy, (senior vp, executive vp, senior executive vp).

When I was at Citibank, I was one of hundreds of vice presidents. The only person who found it impressive was my mom who would tell her friends my son is a vice president at Citibank.

37

u/pineapple_bandit 1d ago

My friends husband was a VP at Goldman Sachs. She and her husband were both first gen college grads and first gen white collar. Her mom looovvvveeed to brag how her son in law was promoted to become THE vice president of Goldman Sachs at just 29 years old! Lol.

10

u/myaudienceiseveryone 1d ago

tbf average white collar being 80-100k and average vp of GS being closer to 200-400k is impressive in its own right.

22

u/James-the-Bond-one 1d ago

Making your mom proud is well worth it.

112

u/yankykiwi 1d ago

Dang, she probably wasnt far into being back at work

143

u/BoysenberryIcy1477 1d ago

It was her first day back :(

58

u/naturalninetime 1d ago

Her first day back after maternity leave? 🥺

Why is life so cruel? 💔

8

u/Independent_Bid_26 1d ago

Shortly before this i found out a friend of mine from high-school was killed along with her one year old child because some asshole drove the wrong way on the highway. Alcohol was involved but I just cant imagine the pain and suffering her family is experiencing. The world is a cruel, and cold place. I hope that my children never have to see the kind of suffering I have been a party to or witnessed, but honestly i dont have much hope. If there is a god, he is ignoring his creation because of what we have become. Its disheartening.

We've also got a 5-month old, and my wife only went back to work a month ago. I cannot imagine how horrible this is, on top of losing your loved one, you know your kid will never know their mother...and has no way right now of understanding why someone so important to her is suddenly no longer around. Makes me shudder.

This is incredibly sad. We clearly have a mental health emergency going on here. And at the same time our government is cutting funding to mental health programs nationwide. In my area, multiple hospitals have been forced to close down, or reduce the services they offer because funding sources have been withheld. I am a Masters student in social work, and honestly its disgusting how little people actually care about the mentally ill.

For reference the banking hierarchy is, roughly:
22-25 yo: Analyst
25-29 yo: Associate
29-34 yo: Vice President
34-44 yo: Director / Executive Director
45-55+ yo: Managing director

More senior than that you start getting “Vice Chairman”, “Head of XYZ”, etc.

This is completely standard across all banks basically internationally It’s literally just nomenclature. It’s been this way for 20-30+ years. No rhyme or reason.

No VP at a bank equates that title to a VP at another company where that person is one of the top 3-5 people at the company… apples and oranges.

This poor woman was a relatively junior person less than 1/3 of the way into her career just trying to provide for her family and newborn baby…

265

u/Electronic-Pause1330 2d ago

I was reading into why the title.

It’s tied to customer psychology. Banks are in the customer service industry and a multimillionaire who is doing business with the bank might have issue with working with a middle manager so they give these employees a VP title.

It’s silly, but I remember looking into this when that other bank VP was being sued or something by the “younger” junior employee for sexual harassment.

47

u/EternalNewCarSmell 2d ago

What's weird about that though is wouldn't someone who has a ton of money and actually cares about that sort of thing have done like three seconds of research to see that it is essentially meaningless?

52

u/Barney_Weasley 2d ago

Yes you are correct. Maybe 20-30 years ago it was used for customer reasons but today it’s literally just a relic title

33

u/rjnd2828 1d ago

It's very difficult to dial titles back and be convince people they're not getting demoted.

11

u/Zayage 1d ago

I mean it is a demotion.

There's probably more than a few places that have been fooled by a VP of a bank applying for a management job in a different field.

Now that would mean you just don't get interviewed because "too qualified"

9

u/baumungus 1d ago

At an investment bank it’s more than likely a vp is around the same level of quality as an older VP elsewhere. For better or worse these banks are hiring a lot of talented and hard working people. People often leave somewhat junior banking / finance jobs for senior roles (CFO, head of IR, CIO) at other companies.

I learned how widespread and how many roles it covered when that Chase VP was terminated for stealing a trash can.

19

u/Barney_Weasley 2d ago

Maybe 20 years ago. Not so much anymore. That multimillionaire is usually smart enough to recognize that they are being attended to by a 32 year with 5-10 years experience vs a 45 year old with 20+… they are looking at age/experience not some silly title

4

u/braudan 1d ago

While that may be true, once titles have been established, people will not move away from them. Just like with money, job titles will only ever inflate.

Experience matters more but as a customer you wonder why you get John, the 32 years old senior associate and not Lisa, the 33 years old vice president.

3

u/raze_____ 1d ago

reverse is happening in tech right now actually hahaha

u/whatsasyria 1d ago

That's more of the sales / wealth manager side answer that exists in every industry. Directors internationally have always been the highest rank. VP in banking was mainly because they had specialized roles that carried seniority within their realm but not for the broader business unit and they couldn't use director because internationally director was reserved for the board.

3

u/bitsmythe 1d ago

As a former "VP" in financial services it's mostly about legal responsibility personally for your actions whether it's financial or as you touched on HR related.

VP is the sweet spot. Good pay, but you can go home at night and switch off on weekends.

VP’s almost never manage anyone in I-banking. Sure you are responsible for the work analysts and associates perform, but not a direct reporting line. VP was the worst position at my shop.. you’re essentially doing analyst/associates work (or at least correcting it), but you’re actually responsible for executing transactions with clients during the day and preparing materials at night. Then when a mistake happens, you’re the one getting yelled at by the MD.

Thanks for sharing this, though it's very sad that you have to justify why this stabbing is a tragedy. She wouldn't have deserved to be stabbed to death even if she was an c-suite executive or on the board.

19

u/Fluffy_Carry_4345 1d ago

2026 when arguing that murder is wrong is a losing argument.

I genuinely cannot be friends with people who promote murder fuck that.

5

u/NoJacket7713 1d ago

Don't worry. It will only ever happen to the bad people.

Weakening the taboo on murder to a subjective judgment on the victim's moral standing couldn't possibly have unintended consequences.

u/cecsix14 1d ago

Exactly, I always joke the banks only have two positions, teller and VP. And the tellers are going away.

6

u/Full_Guard 1d ago

From someone who actually worked at BofA as a VP, I can tell you the title is meaningless. Everyone on my team was a VP. In other companies, a VP at BofA would equate to a team leader, though there are a lot of individual contributors at the bank that are VPs, so even then it doesn’t map very well. What matters at the bank is your Band Level. A VP, Band 5, could be someone like a software developer that’s just a few years out of college.

11

u/ILootEverything 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah, the joke working at a bank is that there are more Vice Presidents than tellers. I've been a VP at two banks working in technology roles and really it was only linked to a week longer time-off benefits at both.

If someone killed this woman because they thought she had any power, then they're deeply stupid or mentally ill.

Do we even know if she was killed because of her job or was it a random crime that has been picked up by the media and sensationalized using her title because people are counting on others not understanding that VP at a bank is essentially meaningless?

ETA: Oh, got my answer...

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the attack, which took place on Monday around 4:24 p.m. ET in the vicinity of West 42 Street and Seventh Avenue, *appeared to be random and unprovoked.***

The NYPD said when officers arrived on the scene they found Pamela Cisneros, a 49-year-old woman, who was brandishing two large knives and advanced toward officers. Officers shot Cisneros, and ‌she was later pronounced dead. Tisch said Cisneros had a *documented mental health history.***

4

u/tgerz 1d ago

I saw the video of the woman being shot the other day in a random sub. Makes sense that it was mental health. They were tasing her and she was still running at the cops swinging. There were a shitload of people all around so it was kind of wild to see them just drop here with a couple different officers firing. Sad situation all around.

My mom was a VP at BofA before she was laid off. At the time I think her total compensation package was just over $90k a year, but it was a while ago and she's moved around a lot since then so my numbers could be off.

5

u/CricketNo7666 1d ago

Not sure what’s you are trying to say.

So if this WAS a senior leader position, then… then what? Then, this isn’t a poor woman instance? I just don’t get the relevance/inference.

7

u/Barney_Weasley 1d ago

I’m trying to head off the mouth breathers who are saying “she deserved it because she was a banking executive” by showing she was not in fact an executive.

Now I personally believe that even if she were the CEO she would not “deserve it” and it would still be a tragedy.

But that’s an impossible argument to win with a meaningful percentage of Reddit.

4

u/camote713 1d ago

Dear lord that’s insane, I didn’t even think of the Redditor perspective that she might have deserved it given her position as executive. Absolutely disgusting

The title inflation thing has been running riot for years. Got a mail from a ‘VP’ yesterday who wrote me an entire chapter email, checked out her LinkedIn & yes pro photo, business suit, crossed arms and tilted body.

Role: CX/Sales in Marketing/Advertising ind.

Maybe a handful of reports on ~€50k all reporting into sales division. I mean I get the title inflation as a get me listened to outside the company but do they have to believe it so convincingly themselves?

The mail told me everything I need to know, too much time on her hands getting involved in a big nothing and a inflated title

It’s rampant, titles are so much cheaper than €€€

2

u/mishtron 1d ago

117

u/d0ngl0rd69 1d ago

Well, not only that, but VPs are just middle management in the banking world. This isn’t a Brian Thompson scenario.

43

u/grapeshotfor20 1d ago

Not even middle management, I'm a VP at a bank and I don't manage anybody, nor do I make that much money. At my bank all it does is change what documents we're allowed to sign on behalf of the bank

I work with tons of VP and even directors in the construction world.

These people make between $90,000 and maybe $300,000 on the top end. They are not CEO of international corps that ruin lives, they pay mortgages, have a slightly bigger house than some etc.

Some are just owners of small businesses or the kids of the parent who started lol.

Even some CEO types aren't insanely rich, maybe $200 /$500k. Yes it's good money, but not a ton more than senior workers, especially after taxes

Reading the comments... why is everyone so obsessed with why the news mentions the job title? I always see this. Sometimes is a teacher (as mentioned by someone else in this post), a salesman, etc... I'm sure that if instead of this poor woman, the victim was the guy selling hot dogs at the corner, they would have mentioned that the victim was the owner of a hot dog stand. I see that all the time. What's up with the conspiracy theories?!! 🤦‍♂️

RIP young lady. I hope the family stays strong while going through all of this.

This website has gotten very dumb, like I’m not sure what changed in the demographics using Reddit today versus ten years ago but there’s an air of stupidity on every post today. I’m not saying Redditors of the past were all geniuses but there was some semblance of basic life experience and intellectualism.

Nowadays it feels like you go into a comment section and you’re explaining how the world works to someone who has quite literally never read the news or stepped outside in their life.

All that to say you’re correct they always mention the job title and the commenters don’t know that because they don’t know anything.

u/0ApplesnBananaz0 1d ago

I think it's a dumbing down of our society. I am talking intellectually dumb. Knowing the high percentage of ppl who cannot read past a 4th grade reading level and have comprehension skills, many ppl are dumb. These are the ppl who will argue loud to sound smarter and stand 10 toes down when they are factually wrong. It's really sad actually.

because its reddit, if someone holds a job that makes them richer than a person on reddit (most redditors make more than 30k per year which means they are in the top like 5% of wealth in the world, but if soneone is in the top1 or 2% they celebrate and cheer their murders.. its sick really.

damn, she had a 5 month old new born. heartbreaking that kids gonna grow up without a mom

6

u/Nior-Fox 1d ago

Okay, the article states "Cisneros had no arrest history with the NYPD, though department records showed two previous encounters involving mental illness, in 2018 and 2019, Tisch said. Investigators have no reason to believe the attack was an act of terrorism"

Also, she died after facing the NYPD when she refused to comply. This person stabbed a tourist who was inside the bank also.

It's a very sad situation but title of this article is kinda of a click bait.

5

u/Melodic-Mode2332 1d ago

Everyone at BOA is a VP. Aside from the weird focus on her job title, this is so tragic and I feel terrible for the victims and their families.

The fact that it even somehow matters is baffling

Like if she was an actual VP and got killed going to work, it would be ok because she had way more money than you.

This is the brain rot that redditors operate in.

Most people, even super rich ones, live the same day to day as everyone else. I know hedge fundies making 800k a year who commute by train into NYC and they spent their weekend working on a farm.

6

u/BearCub254 1d ago

Man. A lot of people would quickly forget that she is woman and a young mother. Reddit sounds cool and edgy if you have the brain of a 14yo. At first I thought I jad found the best place for lefties but over time reddit has made me fear these people.

It’s like talking to a brick wall trying to get this point out but being wealthy doesn’t make you any more or less likely to do evil in the world. Wealth only allows already bad people easier access to commit evil actions.

Celebrating the death of someone whose only crime was being wealthier than you does nothing to actually help the issues of class divide and income inequality. The only purpose it will serve is to push people with basic morality (most people find random murder is bad, shocking.) away from your message.

All our condolences.
I can't believe this happened.
My prayers go out.

How can this be?
It's just too awful.
Going outside shouldn't be a risk.
Helping people with issue should be our priority.
Explicitly those with problems that could manifest as violence.
Really a shame.

5

u/Tan-hat-man 1d ago

I am a native Manhattanite and was raised to be wary of crazy, violent people, but no matter how rare or random these attacks are, it’s always alarming to hear.

It’s so senseless that such a tragedy can suddenly occur during a normal afternoon on weekday that it makes one think about their own mortality. I feel for the victims’ family, friends , her husband for her baby that will never know her Mom. RIP

13

u/sitewolf 1d ago

A woman is dead and all the comments are about her being a VP at 32, not her murder.
Our society is so screwed up.

3

u/Weekly-Image-9169 1d ago

Yeah because that’s in the title of every news article. Media wants it portrayed a certain way so we all turn against each other. I haven’t seen anyone celebrate this random, tragic murder.

A lot more stuff like this happens and unless the person is in the middle of Times Square or dies, you won’t hear about it.  My relative had their face slashed by a crazy woman in the middle of the day, midtown Manhattan, just walking out of her apartment building.  Person had previous arrests and was insane, but walking free around Manhattan.  If my relative didn’t put their sunglasses on, their eye would have been taken out.

Or supervisor of 0.

“first approached a 68-year-old Rhode Island tourist near West 41st Street and Seventh Avenue around 4:30 p.m. with two knives, stabbing the man in the abdomen as he stood with his wife waiting to cross the street. He was hospitalized in stable condition.
Cisneros then continued north on Seventh Avenue and stabbed Piacenti in the abdomen near 42nd Street, about 20 seconds after the first attack, Tisch said.”

“Cisneros had no arrest history with the NYPD, though department records showed two previous encounters involving mental illness, in 2018 and 2019, Tisch said. Investigators have no reason to believe the attack was an act of terrorism, she said.”

Holy shit our country needs proper mental health care and institutionalization because clearly people going crazy is getting innocent people murdered.

It’s so heartbreaking to see someone who just became a mother and worked hard throughout her education to get the position she was in to have her life end just because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time

3

u/Bennnrummm 1d ago

Whyyyyyy does her corporation come before her name and words like “mother, wife, daughter” - this world has shit so out of order.

3

u/planetjaycom 1d ago

This is a full circle moment; I saw a video on one of the subs of a woman getting shot in NYC after wielding a knife

And later read that she stabbed two people and killed one

Then my first thought was to connect this to the stabber; and sure enough it was the same person

RIP (to the BOA vice president)

u/your_mileagemayvary 2d ago

The government got mad at banks because they would screw up and blame low level employees for authorizing things that where illegal and then found that the banks upper management was pressuring these low level employees. But because the employee is the one that technically broke the law the upper folks never saw any punishment. So the gov made a rule that vp or higher needs to sign off. The result is the banks created new titles and inflated the shit out of the titles and continues to pressure low level employees to do the dirty shit while upper management still rides away with technically not having done anything wrong

Welcome to banks in america, we are about due for yet another bailout of whatever bullshit they manage to get us into

Her daughter may grow up knowing, “If I had been born just one day later, Mom wouldn’t have been at work that day.” Obviously there’s no blame whatsoever on that child, it’s just one of those unimaginably cruel twists of timing that makes the whole thing even harder to comprehend.

New mom just came back from five-month maternity leave and just celebrated second wedding anniversary. Graduated from UPenn, who sang in an acapella group and Fordham Law. It’s too bad she didnt work remote though she may have been looking forward to going back to the office.

That she’s VP at BoA working around the corner from Times Square is probably the least interesting thing about her. I feel bad for the infant daughter and relatively newly wed husband left behind. RIP.

Articles like this are specifically titled like this to make people angry and inspire more divide and hate. Poor woman, wtf is going to be the breaking point for us as a society until we acknowledge that maybe just maybe visibly crazy people shouldn’t be walking city streets? We need to be building more mental health care facilities to get these types of people out of our cities and get them the help they need. We have endless money for bombing other countries but nothing for keeping our cities safe?

2

u/diplar 1d ago

The question is was this targeted

2

u/Gobal_Outcast02 1d ago

Is she one of the people the crazy lady with the two knives killed?

2

u/kabotya 1d ago

Yes. She killed one person. The other guy is going to recover.

2

u/WVA1999 1d ago

Dreadful. But who are these people putting stories like this on this subreddit? And what's with the titles?

There is nothing woahthatsinteresting about it. It's awful.

2

u/RichardMuggedHimself 1d ago

It's wild that this is the headline I keep seeing posted, and everyone waxes on about her job title. Like, if this happened to me, would the headline be "Mediocre IT guy from Company X shanked in the face"? What does it matter where one was employed?

2

u/Stanny_Tendergrass 1d ago

The fat nutjob who did it was shot and killed. It’s everywhere right now.

2

u/Known_Cartographer62 1d ago

Is this the one that crazy lady in NYC stabbed and later lunged at police officers who shot her?

2

u/MeetingNearby2510 1d ago

Yea they really need to stop with emphasizing the VP element of her title. Banks throw this title around much more than other industries. Also it’s not like the victim was on the deciding end of something that negatively impacted the killer.

I’m sure Erin would be cringing that her random and tragic murder is being reported alongside an honorific title to create some kind of “connection”

2

u/IllustriousSeason888 1d ago

Big question is if the fat lady used her windmill knife attack on the VP?

2

u/Interesting_Kiwi_693 1d ago

For context, a company like BoA might have hundreds of VPs. IIRC, the title has something to do with a loophole for overtime pay?

3

u/K1LLINGMACHINE 1d ago

I think youre right. My wife works at Goldman Sachs and VP is like one step above entry level for a lot of positions
