And that is the end of cloud gaming.

1.6k

u/chocotaco 9h ago

Or the start of pay per hour gaming. I remember in the early 2000s there used to be gaming cafes and would pay by the hour.

1.2k

u/ColeTrain999 9h ago

It's different when you're at a café like that. If I'm at home chilling without pants it's different

424

u/misterwizzard 9h ago

Yeah, at a cafe you're renting the hardware

168

u/Sawitlivesry 9h ago

Now, you go to the cafe to rent the pants

16

u/soGoGetBent 2h ago

Maybe gaming was always just the pants we rented along the way.

8

u/Technical-Finish304 6h ago

I'll rent you my pants but I might still be wearing them.

u/Mattnificent 9h ago

You're actually renting hardware with game streaming, as well.

83

u/musclecard54 8h ago

That’s why I don’t do that… I have my own hardware

u/Requiescat-In--Pace 6h ago

They want to switch everyone to cloud gaming to get that sweet recurring revenue cash. Plus then they can squeeze even more money out of us by minutely controlling how we play, like this hourly cap.

Default 720p quality... unless you pay $15 more per month for 1080p! Just $29.95 more per month for 4k!

*Fine details: You only get premium quality for the first 20 hours of game play per month, after which your quality is throttled to 720p.*

51

u/srcLegend 4h ago

I'll drop gaming entirely before I subject myself to that.

6

u/i_literally_died 1h ago

There are quite literally enough pixel art indie gems already out there that will run on a toaster to last most of us a lifetime.

I'll just do that before I ever stream Super Slop Big Guy Killing Machine 4K 3D 2026 for $5 an hour with 3 seconds of latency.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/cum-on-in- 6h ago

Correction: 2 hours of 4k. 720p after. 20 hours total. Then it's $5 an hour overage.

11

u/GetawayDreamer87 4h ago

and theyll call it unlimited

Cloud gaming is also renting the hardware? The computers just somewhere else.

25

u/pariah1981 8h ago

It’s like renting the hardware so you have a shittier experience.

13

u/Richard7666 9h ago

Yeah that's a good way to think of it.

You're basically just bringing your own monitor and peripherals to the LAN cafe, and the computer is a thousand miles away instead of on the desk beside you.

Those cafes still exist. You get all you can eat soft ice cream, drinks, they serve food, you get a private cubical, with a fold down bed / couch if you want, it's amazing. So, ya, you aren't paying for only gaming by the hour but only run $5-$20 an hour. I used to thrive on those if I missed the last train home. Fucking saviors, those were.

3

u/Addrobo 5h ago

Where at?

6

u/MGAV89 2h ago

Japan for what they’ve described. Europe still has Internet cafes but never heard of one like that other than Japan.

6

u/red-rundmc 8h ago

What makes you think I was wearing pants at said cafe??

→ More replies (12)

54

u/rdlenke 9h ago

It made a bit more sense at the time because of the limited access to hardware and to the internet specifically. In my country gaming "cafes" started as a way to play multiplayer games on local networks.

With most people having access to hardware (even if it's old hardware) and the rise of single player and indie games, I don't know if pay per hour can truly start. Maybe if some big release is cloud only, but even still I don't see it being sustained in the long run.

72

u/TrickyMoonHorse 9h ago

This is how we played starcraft LAN.

There was a humid stench to that place.

30

u/Mr-Who 9h ago

Now the stench is at your local card shop

26

u/UrdnotZigrin 9h ago

What is it with the super geeks and refusing to shower? I know that there are gross people from all walks of life, but it seems like only really nerdy hobbies like card tournaments have to have special rules for hygiene

20

u/crozzy89 9h ago

No time to shower when you are gaming. All energy must be put towards the game. Maybe they should start offering some incentives for being of clean appearance and/or smell.

24

u/alexthealex 7h ago

Yeah, incentives like being allowed in.

No one loves them enough to tell the truth.

Also buying deodorant and soap is sub optimal if you aren't going to 100% both social and intellectual achievements in life.

6

u/Foxyfox- 5h ago

Also the often-attendant depression. It's by no means the main cause, but...

6

u/FreakingScience 1h ago

I own a hobby shop (that does not sell cards) and it's not all nerds that stink, it's almost exclusively card players. I can tell if someone is going to ask about cards when they walk through the door, and when they're gone, we rate their stink auras by the furthest person to have smelled it, like calculating your dose after the demon core incident but for BO. Of the regulars we do have for non-card stuff, you can still tell which ones also do cards. It's baffling.

I do not know why this is the case, but it is. It's so true that it's in the top reasons we're never going to start selling cards, since our shop doesn't currently stink.

Even before that online stuff had cases where it was per hour billing for dialup. Old services like the imagination network (really special case because it was ONLY about online gaming) and before that more general services like AOL, prodigy, compuserve, and Q-link (precursor to AOL on commodore hardware).

Let’s not go back to the dark ages, please.

I’m not paying by the hour to play my games. That’s a ridiculous idea.

27

u/MotoRandom 9h ago

Back in the late 70s / early 80s there were no home consoles or PCs that could play complex sprite graphics so we went to the arcade. We pumped quarters into video game cabinets because that was the only choice. It's weird to see this come around again to where you sit in your living room and do the same thing but with a debit card. At least we got a little fresh air going to the arcade.

Its because of AI. The same servers are making 3-10x++ more on AI than they are on gaming.

139

u/GrandmaPoses 8h ago

Not making, costing. They’re nickel and diming cloud gaming to make up for AI losses.

30

u/Zargabraath 6h ago

Cloud gaming never really made money to begin with. Google lost a ton with stadia and gave up in pretty short order. Microsoft/Xbox have been losing their shirt on pretty much everything gaming related they do that isn’t Minecraft

11

u/you-are-not-yourself 4h ago edited 3h ago

The primary reason Stadia failed was that they were unable to convince AAA devs to port their games to Linux-based OSes, despite offering technical support

In other words, they got monopolized by Microsoft

Platforms are fine losing money if they experience growth, but if they don't experience growth, they have no future.

Edit: I want to clarify that I was told this by people who the general public wouldn't have access to. I didn't come up with this myself.

I find there are a lot of games on GamePass that I will never play, but I keep paying for it because it is a set monthly rate and I can play as much or as little as I like. Making me pay for minutes is why I dropped my old phone carrier and moving their model the complete wrong direction. This would actually make me cancel rather than be hassled to pay for more time.

Just wait until instead of selling you a “license” for a digital game, they move everything to streaming by the minute.

The ultimate enshitification.

All these people saying they’re jumping ship from Sony to Microsoft don’t realize that Microsoft loves this shit, and they wanted it for 15 years.

Honestly, gaming is probably fucked.

10

u/West-Abalone-171 5h ago

Don't worry.

You'll still pay $90 for the license for the game.

You'll just also have to pay $20/hr to play it.

15

u/Ossius 6h ago

Nah, indie games and steam will keep things going. You don't need to run modern hardware to play most games. Silk song runs fine on 10 year old hardware.

AAA games might diminish, but honestly that's not so bad. Some AA games are infinity better.

Sony and MS can kill themselves off by shitty practices. We've survived gaming collapses before. Indie devs pick up the slack.

Good.

We need to go back to this crazy concept where you buy a video game, you put it in your console to play it, and you own both the game and console forever. You are able to use both for as long as you like, regardless of internet connectivity.

278

u/TheRoyalBrook 8h ago

Genuinely the fact its 5 hours for the low plan, and 15 for the high is insulting lol. Like anyone who pays for it for streaming (which I imagine do exist tbh. Its what it was marketed for as a way to play xbox games without owning one) are now basically paying 20 a month to play maybe one or two saturdays.

71

u/retard_seasoning 6h ago

Is it 5 hours a day or a month? 5 hours a month doesn't make any sense.

179

u/TheRoyalBrook 6h ago

5 hours a month, and 15 for the high plan. Its why everyone's calling it ridiculous.

I did use it for the streaming mainly. I never got around to getting a current gen console but I do have a gaming PC and laptop.

So I have gamepass and will use the cloud gaming to play the console versions of games (it really mattered when I was an admin for a console DayZ server). But I haven’t used it much lately tbh.

But now? Oh they can fuck all the way off. I’ll just start moving my PC library over to GOG. Which lets me download offline installers. These companies can get fucked.

No more PC gamepass for me it looks like.

Watch NVIDIA change that.

Cloud Gaming isn't their priority, and converting existing data centers to AI projects would allow them to add more AI capacity without needing to build as many new locations.

No one's talking about the elephant in the room about how cloud gaming was not becoming profitable, only more expensive, and maybe they should turn and point at that as "Hey, are we just doing this same shit again but with a different coat of failure?" before investing more in AI.

Christ, SIE needs to put Layden back in charge. Hulst and the Japanese dude are driving the damn thing off a cliff. And it's where Sony makes the big bucks... if it goes under, so does Sony.

19

u/grubas 8h ago

Sonys busy trying to argue that every digital game is a licence buy in court.

They are 100% looking to say you can only buy a game for a year and then you need to pay more.

Edit: just read the article. It's actually 5 fucking hours 😂 hope microslop and sony enjoy the beds they've made for themselves

30

u/Skyrider11 9h ago

And they claim that this will only affect 4% of Game Pass users. That 4% of game pass users use their subscription less than 5 hours per month feels like impossible, right? Even less than 15 which is the max tier is surprisingly little

17

u/adpoop 8h ago

Idek what the point of them saying 4% was, let alone that it's a real number. "We're only screwing over a few people so you shouldn't care" is a wild defense lmao. I imagine they're saying 4% of game pass users use cloud gaming and that's who it's effecting¿ The service isn't making as much money as they advertised to share holders so they take the in app purchase route to sell more hearts when you run out¿

$10 a month for 5 hours of cloud gaming is insane. The only people willing to pay for unlimited game streaming are the hardcore gamers, who they just turned off from ever paying for this. These people don't understand their core audience.

13

u/ManiacalShen 9h ago

Only 4% of subscribers currently exceed the limits they set here. It really sucks for those people, who were sold a bill of goods that's getting yanked out from under them, but cloud gaming is still niche enough that i wager almost no one will cancel because of this.

I would guess Xbox saw a need to set a limit before the service got too popular and they risked pissing off way more people later.

41

u/Skyrider11 8h ago

That number feels like it can't possibly be true, and if it is, isn't it a bit of a self own? That people use your service THAT little?

13

u/Randomlucko 7h ago

It's 4% of all game pass users (at least from the article). I'm guessing most users never use the streaming game function, just stick to actually downloading and running the game locally.

Good. This cloud gaming is the pathway to no one owning a PC or console, and all games requiring a subscription. The fewer people using them, the better.

47

u/ArenjiTheLootGod 9h ago

Microsoft is clearly shifting their Game Pass business model from one that seeks to grow user adoption rates towards one that seeks to extract as much profit as possible from its captive user base.

The inevitable enshittification is why I've been avoiding getting a Game Pass sub for years, anyone still subscibed should probably consider bailing because it's only going to get worse and/or more expensive from here.

6

u/arrocknroll 8h ago

I enjoyed game pass while I had it. I had a PC and a Series X for the living room that other people in the house I was living with at the time would use. It was really nice to have a catalogue of games as soon as I brought the system home from multiple generations that we could all sit and play.

That said, it was one of the easiest services I have ever quit. I knew the games I wanted to keep, bought them, and carried on. In four months of the $30 subscription after the price hike I was paying more for them anyway.

There is something to be said for ecosystems keeping customers captive but I think Microsoft and Sony seem to think its a lot harder to jump ship than it actually is.

“Please say Coca Cola five times to activate your console. For additional streaming minutes, scan the QR code on the back of your Lucky Charms box”

40

u/TheSauciestBoss 9h ago

If it’s only gonna affect 4% of users then why change it all? You’re gonna squeeze that much more money out of the 4% to return a marginal profit? Go fuck yourself.

13

u/crownpr1nce 9h ago

If it only affects 4% of subscribers, that's because that part of the service is not working and not catching on. People are subscribing for the other perks. That's admitting it failed, and throwing in the towel early. Cause it won't get bigger with these tiny limits.

As someone who primarily uses the cloud because I’m not buying a second Xbox and I don’t want to sit downstairs late at night and want to game in my cozy room, fuck this.

8

u/jrhaberman 9h ago

This is exactly the boat I am in. I cloud game in my office upstairs almost exclusively while my Xbox is in the basement.

I don't know what I'll do. Very disappointing.

5

u/gtck11 9h ago edited 6h ago

On top of this I spend up to 3 months a year at my parents sometimes in 2+ week stretches. This is such a gross move by them. I’m thinking about investing in a steam deck finally now.

2

u/idkifthisisgonnawork 6h ago

I've had a steam deck since release. Prior to that I was console/gaming PC. I haven't touched the Xbox since getting the deck and only use my PC to steam games to my deck. I truly love this device.

6

u/OneSeaworthiness7768 7h ago

You can use remote play from the console to stream to another device without cloud…. Reading these comments makes me think a lot of people don’t know this exists.

15 hour a month top limit on gameplay is a move someone who doesn’t know game culture at all would do

31

u/photog_prince 9h ago

Sad because we all know eventually gaming companies won't sell hardware and will only sell cloud subscriptions. We're going to be truly fucked in a couple years. All so they can make another billion dollars.. wonderful

17

u/Ak_Lonewolf 9h ago

fuck that. I still have hundreds of older games I can play that still have 1000's of hours of mods to play. I can wait 10 years before buying new games.

Back to physical everything, fuck digital. Get into board gaming, MTG (with proxies), and hanging out with your friends. The only way out of the commodified digital future is to go and touch grass.

Only starts at 5 hours and caps at 15 hours a month before you have to pay to have more. I could maybe understand a little if they set it as weekly, but that’s absolutely tiny for a month included.

Only about 10 minutes per day for Essential and a half hour for Ultimate. What a joke.

8

u/Orgnok 9h ago

those are some hillariously low numbers, 5h of gaming a month on the standard pass? Imagine netflix limited you to two movies a month.
It may as well just be pay per hour

The age of open source products, locally produced developments, a nd small business games are being accelerated due to these companies pushing their limits. They think consumers have no choice, but their greedy actions will get groupS of people to create gaming communities that dont rely on their bullshit.

15

u/geebiebeegee 10h ago

I'm too old to keep changing how I game! I didn't like the digital era but I adapted. I found joy in trying all the games against my old school ways. Now with yo yo subscription prices and fundamentally changing the service i pay for on a whim whenever...? Gaaaa!

12

u/DoesntMatterEh 9h ago

Get a PC and Steam and buy indie games. I've gotten hundreds of hours of fun out of a $15 purchase. Fuck AAA gaming almost none of it is worth the price.

So take away physical copies. And now limit cloud gaming. What next? lol

6

u/Cheetawolf 9h ago

Microsoft jumped the gun and probably ruined everyone's plans.

They were supposed to wait until local computing power was unaffordable and everyone was forced to use cloud systems with no other options, and THEN start pulling shit like this.

u/Nazrael75 8h ago

Microsoft: "we want to be prominent in gaming again"

Drive up PC part prices and then force them into a limited cloud. Kinda like having to pay for a Cyber Cafe in your own living room

21

u/CypherAZ 9h ago

I would rather buy a game for full price on steam then pay these assholes another dollar.

11

u/thehenryshow 7h ago

HAHAHAHAHAHA fuck right off. Sony and Xbox are dead to me. Steam wins this war.

10

u/speakermic 9h ago

I'm guessing this change is related to GTA6

5

u/CruelAngelsThesis_01 9h ago

Invest in physical media.

DVD’s, consoles, game discs, cartridges. The writings on the wall, folks. Soon the only way you’re gonna be able to freely enjoy your purchases is the old fashion way of non-internet based physical media.

Hour limited online gaming?   Are we really going back to 1991 playing The Shadow of Yserbius on Sierra Online?

5

u/Disma 7h ago

Golly, who could have possibly foreseen this happening? Guess what? It's going to get worse when everything is actually digital only and they have us by the balls.

4

u/Agreeable-Agent-7384 6h ago

If a company with a huge cloud bussiness and infrastructure can’t provide unlimited cloud usage for gaming, it’s a dead idea.

4

Consoles BEGGING us to switch to PC at this point.

5

u/bigbonk-attack 4h ago

i‘ve been a Playstation Player since the very first PS1 & after Sony announced they are killing physical games & Microsoft announced they will keep them & give you a digital license in addition to every physical game you purchase I‘ve finally decided to move to XBOX once their new console releases, but with this article just like that I‘ve decided to definitely NEITHER PURCHASE the PlayStation nor the XBOX.
I‘m out.

3

u/soggybiscuit93 9h ago

Will this put the nail in the conspiracy that the hardware shortages were intended to push people to cloud gaming?

Turns out when gaming hardware prices skyrocket, even the game streaming companies dont wanna wanna buy the parts either because the whole business model relies on cheap hardware.

So now theyre rate limiting users instead.

I was curious what kind of limits they'd put. They destroyed my lowest expectations by quite a bit. The highest package is 15h. I'm a casual gamer with a full time job, a part time job, other hobbies like sports, and even I would exceed that most months. Who the hell is the 5h package for? An hour a week isn't worth paying a subscription for...

3

u/factoid_ 9h ago

15 hours per month with ultimate is insanely low.

3

u/paulxombie1331 9h ago

I specifically bought my series S snd upped my internet plan to stream games through cloud. I travel 2 to 3 months a year. Microsoft and Playstation in the last few months have effectively made a decision for me.. My friend just gave me her gaming rig. Time to set sail and plunder the sea of torrents.

3

u/PoisonCoyote 9h ago

This is exactly why my Xbox X is the last console I will ever buy. All these gaming companies, hardware and software, are so disgustingly greedy at this point that I’m done.

PC and small devs from now on.
