I'm going to write an article about this comment about how you just read the comments to read the article, which is about how a Reddit comment points out that another article is written solely on Reddit comments

Buddy, I saw enough "big migrations" in last few years to know they mean literally nothing.
We were told that everyone is moving from twitter to mastodon, later twitter to bluesky, later reddit to lemmy, reddit to mastodon, tiktok to some other chinese app and many more that I already forgot about.
All of them didn't really happen. Super small number of very noisy accounts moved, vast majority of them returned back. That's it.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Fywq 3h ago
The Twitter to Bluesky migration did happen in a meaningful way in some communities. Also it doesn't have to be a mass migration to be a bad deal for 1Password. 300.000 USD is around 4000 family subscription years. the 300.000 is over 3 years so really it's only 1333 family subscriptions they need to lose to be in the red over this decision. Sure they might pick up some new customers from the Omarchy user base, but I doubt it will offset the lost customers.

May or may not matter to you that the CEO of Proton came out as a tech bro publicly supporting Trump IIRC. Which politics aside a public pro-government stance is a weird position to assume for a service like Proton.

I haven’t found anywhere that says this. There’s a disclaimer talking about how they receive compensation for product recommendations, but that sounds more like an affiliate program (of which this site has affiliations with most major password managers).
It doesn’t sound like Bitwarden actually paid for this article from what I can tell?

Does Bitwarden have an affiliate link scheme? Does this site take advantage of it?
(If so, I do appreciate that that's not the same thing as Bitwarden directly commissioning the article or dictating its content.)
I ask because they link to the Bitwarden site via a URL (on their own site) which seems to add a lot of tracking information to the referer.
91
104
u/SARB033 12h ago
Well, this is in the preface to the article:
We receive compensation from the products and services mentioned in this story.
And then the article has an entire heading dedicated to transfering 1password vaults specifically to Bitwarden. So it's not exactly a large leap of logic to make.
36
u/OneSeaworthiness7768 11h ago
That seems to be standard at the top of all of their articles. They also link to other things like Proton Pass and Apple passwords and their own list of top password managers in this article.

9
u/joblessandsuicidal 9h ago
Well just a wild theory: What if the compensation came from a *third* password manager competitor that want to smear both Bitwarden and 1Password at the same time?
i.e. The disclaimer is not good enough; it didn't say who exactly sponsors this post unlike the usual sponsored posts I see on other more... reputable online publications

Despite that, it's a fact that 1password has donated $300000 to the guy that said "When wolves get out of control, you shoot them, when gypsies take over public spaces, you deport them." And it's also factual that an undetermined number of users have abandoned 1password because of that. I've seen, with my own eyes, some of them asking about migration on the sub of other popular password manager.

What is it with tech dudes and it being SO HARD to not be openly fascist?
Like, I can understand WHY they support fascism, they obviously assume they'll be holding the reins, not wearing the yoke. But I don't get why they love making it so obvious.
Edit; No more eggs
34
u/PracticalPersonality 12h ago
The answer to this question is deceptively simple.
Imagine a person who thinks that the science fiction elements and aesthetics of dystopian fictions like V for Vendetta , Ghost in the Shell , Blade Runner , and so on are all really cool.
Now imagine that person thinks those systems would make a great world if you just had the right people in charge.
Finally, imagine that person as someone who has absolutely no taste for history, philosophy, media literacy, or anything that might be considered a liberal art, and they managed to get through college without internalizing so much as a metaphor from 1984.
These are the tech leaders of today. Some are more megalomaniacal than others, but they all think they could usher in a new golden age as long as they were given total control over just the right tech. These are people for whom dystopian science fiction is a road map instead of a cautionary tale.
2
u/myfatherthedonkey 12h ago
I think there's a bit of a chicken vs. the egg situation going on here with regard to the first point. Do these people find those elements of dystopian fictions appealing, or did the writers of those fictions just have a very good sense of human nature?
→ More replies (1)8
u/PracticalPersonality 12h ago
It might be splitting hairs to say this, but I'd like to think that because many people I know don't find those elements appealing, that it's not so much human nature as it is some element or sub-culture of recent society.
There's definitely substance to what you're saying, I just don't want to believe it's as widely applicable as the words "human nature" would imply.

Just something to keep in mind when discussing the content.
Used 1password for 5 years - tired of the fingerprint login not working on mobile, random login issues on mobile, autocomplete barely being functional, and seemingly no updates to the platform. Money being donated to trash causes sealed the deal.

Dammit. Migrating password managers is always a hassle, having faith everything is covered including 2FA codes setup was copied correctly takes far too much effort if you don't trust the migration process.
3
u/yuusharo 15h ago
The FIDO credential exchange draft protocol solves a lot of these problems, but support for it is limited (since it’s still technically a draft).
Apple and Bitwarden both support it, and there are some KeePass compatible clients that work with it, too. Biggest advantage is it transfers passkeys on top of passwords and TOTP secrets.
6

3
u/cr0ft 2h ago
Bitwarden is FOSS and you can run it self hosted for free. You can also pay them a reasonable amount to use their cloud and all the features.
Support open source instead of corporations run by psychos.
Keepass is another great option but it's more for the big nerds who can work around the limitations. It can be outstanding.
19
u/silverbolt2000 15h ago
The article cites a single Reddit user who claims to have left 1Password for something else as evidence that users are “Fleeing” the app.
Anyone who believes anything anyone says on Reddit needs a reality check. Using it as evidence in a published article is insane.
53
u/ApathyMoose 16h ago
Dumb. No, I am not fleeing 1Password. I dont feel my information is any less safe after this. The Entire linked article is written like an advertisement for Bitwarden. Its always telling when they decide to give step by step guides to migrate to 1 specific other company, and mention the other company multiple times from random reddit comments.

There’s an open source P2P sync solution that’s KeePass compatible called Bramble, it just came out a few months ago. Been playing with it for the past week and it’s pretty good if you just need a simply way to sync passwords and passkeys between devices. You can even run your own relay servers so discovery is done entirely by you, no third party involved.
Another free option is self-hosted Vaultwarden, the open source implementation of Bitwarden. You can rent a $2 VPS and in an afternoon setup your own password sync server.
Password syncing should have never been a profit center.
1
u/ahhowwitburns 7h ago
I've just been using syncthing to keep my keepass files up to date, you think it's worth switching over to bramble from that?
My main pain point is keepassdx having inconsistent autofill on android (set up a tasker shortcut just to switch to the keyboard)
2
u/yuusharo 7h ago
I don’t have Android, but from my experience using the iOS app, it’s pretty rough. Autofill works, but autofill anywhere and TOTP codes aren’t implemented yet, and I don’t know if it’s because I switch between Firefox and Brave, but autofill in general that isn’t Apple’s own Passwords app is a little janky (it’s Apple, of course).
You may want to try other KeePassXC compatible apps available on Android, I don’t know any to recommend. You can also export your database and import it into Bramble to give it a try, couldn’t hurt. Just be sure to setup an automatic scheduled backup, and I would test Bramble’s export to KeePass to see how well your passwords round trip in case you want to exit.
2
u/furculture 14h ago
At this point, might as well just start learning open source software and homelab so you can roll your own solution together for stuff like that. Probably the only exception I know of so far is email and everyone pretty much just uses some providers nowadays, but there are a few brave enough to handle it on their own servers and such.

dhh is a chud, but I moved off LastPass to 1Password several years ago and while I find this to be distasteful given the aforementioned chudness, I don't think I'm ready to abandon ship quite yet over this move.
Even the linked article makes it clear they are looking at what their employees are using and making a strategic move to have more say there. That tells me they let their employees pick Linux distributions (wild! good!) and are trying to take a measured approach that gives them input.
I don't think this will be a popular take, but eh.

I’m not fleeing but saw the article yesterday. I had been meaning to see how the Password app on iPhone works. It wasn’t around when I first got 1Password. Looked into how I can switch. There is a convenient export function that you can export directly to the iOS password app. So convenient. Took under a minute. I’ve switched across and cancelled 1Password. I don’t really like the idea of a private company getting involved in politics especially when it’s got all my passwords. Apple already knows everything about me, can’t really hide from them.
2
u/PowderMuse 12h ago
Yeah, I switched to Apple passwords too. I love that it automatically shares WiFi passwords with friends and family and creates email aliases. Not to mention it’s free.

Pretty slimy of Bitwarden to go for this kind of rage bait SponCon tbh.
Look, yes, DHH is an evil piece of shit. His Linux foundation is a joke and his distro is for posers who want to feel like hackers but don’t want to actually configure things. The whole thing smells like some kind of scam. I find the whole thing confusing, and think it’s weird as hell that so many other weird and evil tech people suddenly donated huge amounts of money to this.
I also don’t care enough about some company donating to a Linux foundation, even run by DHH, to change password managers.
