So my surface duo 2 stopped charging recently. I managed to find a report of the same problem and realized squeezing the left screen fixed it temporarily. Turns out the battery pogo-pins weren't making good connection.
Sooooo I opened er up...
Actually not too bad, a hairdryer helped loosen the glue. The side closest to the hinge is the easiest first entry since it has the least glue. Used a suction cup to pull up gently on that side until I could get a pick under there. Then just worked my way around as usual. Last step was slowly pulling the metal backing off the hinge side as it was glued down over there for some reason.
The two things attached to the glass itself are the battery and the coil for powering the pen cover (thanks to the u/panzersharkcat for opening one up 5 yrs ago so I could make that connection).
Anyway now I have options... I was originally just going to fix it and close it back up. But now that I've got it open I'm wondering if I should have some fun.
My two thought are:
Just fix the connection issue and close it up normally
Replace the back cover with a semi-transparent 3d printed cover
On top of just being sick, the second option has the added benefit of making the device a little easier to open up in the future and removing the chance of me shattering the glass at some point.
I also just discovered the other side of my duo got cracked by the charging port (never realized because I have a skin on it) so I could also replace that, although looking at that piece in Phil's removing the camera video I'm a bit worried there might be antennas on there...
If anyone else has any crazy ideas or wants to weight in on what I should do I'm all ears.

Hey gang,
Long time lurker and SD2 owner. I will admit, that I have bounced between SD2 and my previous slab phone a few times when the bugs got a bit too frustrating for me. The last few months especially though, I have just been in love with this thing. So many of the reasons it got lambasted in reviews are things I genuinely LIKE about the device, like not having an outer screen. It keeps me from just pulling it out of my pocket and scrolling at any old time. There is physical and mental friction that helps keep me off of my phone! Also the 'forced' multitasking is such a fantastic boon I'm loathe to give up.
Alas, in the past few days, I've noticed that one of the bottom rails is pulling away from the hinge. That corner is a tiny bit chewed up from a drop at some point in the last few years. It's got me worried about how much longer this beaut is gonna keep kicking.
I'm curious where folks have had good results when migrating to different devices. I've seen a lot about the Fold8, and it sure is pretty, but that price tag! And multitasking, while possible, looks a far cry from what the Duos do. I suppose I could grab a second hand replacement, just not sure how I feel about that. Any advice or anecdotes about your journeys after Duo would be appreciated.

I've been working hard this week trying to make some progress, mainly on getting audio through the speakers. Made a lot of progress there but still no audio. Anyone with knowledge on the sm8150 ADSP is welcome to get in touch.
Progress made:

I loved the surface duo 1 and really enjoyed the 2 also. So I was really excited as I heard all the discussions about the Z Fold8 and it's wide passport form factor. So I went to BestBuy to try it out. Was underwhelmed... I still bought it, because of the trade in deal and wanting to give it a real try. After several weeks I am still underwhelmed. Primarily for 2 reasons.
1) The screen is too small. I know it would be less one hand usage friendly. But I feel the Surface Duo's 5.6" 4:3 outer and 8.1 inch 3:2 Inner was a much better experience than the Z Fold8. I feel cramped and claustrophobic on the Z Fold8 especially when typing.
2) No pen support. I loved taking notes on my bottom screen and having a reference app or video conference on the top screen in portrait. There is no equivalent on the Z Fold 8, and even if there was, it would be too cramped.
3)Microsoft did a really good job making the launcher utilize the 2 screens. I really wish someone would simulate this to some extent by having apps open in split screen mode by default when using the inner screen in landscape mode.
I really hope Motorola takes a cue from Samsung and does it right with Pen Support and larger screen size. However, their software prowess concerns me.
Rant over, you can go back to your normally scheduled programing. š

This will be my 3rd and, hopefully, last Duo. Iāve owned them off and on over the years and always seem to end up selling them. This time, Iām definitely keeping it, with the full intention of running Windows on it.
I havenāt really kept up with this community or the WOA project lately, so Iām curious- has the conversion process gotten pretty straightforward? I remember a couple of years ago it seemed like it was going to take forever to get everything working.
Also, random thought: with how far AI development has come, would it be possible to use AI to help write or develop drivers for hardware that originally didnāt have working drivers?
Either way, Iām excited to be back! Looking forward to getting caught up and seeing how far everything has come.

I have zero experience making apps or designing anything software related but with ChatGPT I made my own keyboard that can run as a standalone app on windows 11! It even can have app shortcuts, shows device info and a one tap launch virtual trackpad to navigate with! it took so so sooooooo many hours but ended up with a version im happy with. for now... lol

Been working on getting it to run on the device for the last few days. Itās still very early stages but progress is being made.
Whatās working:
- Display, both panels with each one able to display itās own content
- Touch (needs more testing)
- GPU, hardware rendering
- DSPs + modem
- WiFi (needs more testing)
The aim is to get a good enough basis for public release for anyone to pick up and make their own ādistroā for it.
Will also push patches to pmOS mainline.
Will try to keep the thread updated.

So, I caved and got a Galaxy Z Fold 8, because someone other than Microsoft finally made a foldable with a book shaped form, but it's still not perfect, it's got no pen support.
My Duo's still fully functional, and I'm wondering what all I should do to scrub all the network and social media apps and turn it into a dedicated dual screen notepad and sketch book.
I have a CSP sub, though it still doesn't work great with the dual screen. Something for simple sketching, though, that I could then finish up on my computer with a proper tablet would be nice.
For note taking I've seen "Touchnotes" suggested and it seems neat.
Running Duo-DE Android 15 right now, 'cause CSP needs it, but I prefer the stock 12L for the dual screen multitasking. I do need the manual screen selection from Duo-DE though, 'cause my hinge sensor doesn't work well anymore.

I downgraded it from Android 12L to Android 11 but I was always uncertain what I'd do if it tried to auto-update to 12L again and that seems to have happened. It downloaded the update and says it'll install it the next time I restart my Surface Duo 2.
If it does end up rebooting and forcing me to take the install, if I re-downgrade it to 11 how do I keep it at 11?

So Iāve been playing around and I think I bricked my duo 1. Itās stuck at the boot loader screen with start, recovery, and power off options. Tried essentially anything g and everything. Anyone else have this issue? If so, howād you fix it?

I bought an original surface duo from fb marketplace but it has a sim lock every time I turn it on, I tried to contact AT&T to request an unlock pin but they told me that due to there being a balance they would not unlock it even thought it is very old by now, obviously that account probably already went to collections and was bought by some debt collector by now.
Any way to possibly unlock it?

Whaaaaa 4 apps at the same time on the Microsoft Surface Duo running Android 16?! š
Not sure who would ever do this but this is so cool to have working. Works with rotation too!
The ROM is still in progress, buggy and not ready due to the port of the Duo framework being more work than I thought it would be. I am about 70% of the way through but I thought I would share an update.
I post to X and Bluesky more regularly @none24smu

Mine just got nicked. I still use it as my daily, and do not want to change. I am in the EU but also have a UK address.

My dad was like "anything you want for your birthday" and I wasn't that invested initially so I just said "GTA6".
But he didn't like the idea of preordering a digital game for nothing tangible so eventually I fished the idea of a broken Surface Duo 2, since I had been looking at them to experiment with as an Android gaming device. This is a 256 GB unit that has a slightly cracked back (there were two for sale in the same listing and the other one had a more severely damaged back ā neither one had issues with the inner screen ā so it was nice to get the one in better condition, although I have a case coming anyway). Only cost $250, so a good price for these as far as I can tell.
I'm currently trying to acquire a Gamesir X2s on eBay (which can be picked up just down the street where I live if I win ā the closest an eBay item has ever been to me). Might also maybe think about getting a stylus (actually, if someone can suggest a nice active stylus that might be cool).

So, I've had the Duo 1 and Duo 2 for a while. I stopped using either as a daily driver a while ago, and I'm now currently on to the Fold 8.
Mainly, I kept them both for selfish posterity reasons as I, of course, love the format, design and feel of them. For that reason, I am compelled to keep one and I'm finally ready to part with one as well.
Which one should I keep? For the limited use of reading, browsing, or light work, both would probably serve the purpose. Love the Duo 1 for its design and flat style (never was a liver of the camera bump on any phone as cameras aren't important to me). With that said, there are obvious benefits to the Duo 2 (more durable, faster, less buggy).
What a dilemma. Ready to be blasted in the comments.

Here is the version of Azahar that works best, or at least the best one I've tested.
App + driver: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ppuBzu_8kgQZuvjiN9THqs4xua5scRob
As shown in the picture below with a 3D-printed case for using the Surface Duo with Joy-Consāfor those users working on that projectāthis version of Azahar works with Joy-Cons without showing that D-PAD glitch

Hello, i found a solution for the duo2 having bootloader looping issues. So basicly your device cant access to fastboot, no matter what you do, you stay on the bootloader menu. The reason why it happend to me was i typed the wrong device name on microsofts website when getting a recovery image. I typed "...FOOL..." instead of "...F00L...". To not get in that state, type adb devices, in resonse it well send your full model name in terminal, that you can paste in the website. But what do you do in a state of a bootloader loop, when its already too late? My " fix" was to wait. My duo2 slowly lost battery over a year, so when i tried to fix it it wouldnt boot, i charged it and it went straight to fastboot. There you need to type "fastboot devices" to get the true name, download the recovery image and then flash. This fixed my duo2, i hope this can help you too. Maybe you can fast forward this drain process with plugging in stuff to the usb or keeping the screen on, idk sadly. edit: keep in mind the golden rule: If your screen still displays, your "hard brick" isnt hard and a fully fixable brick

Missing the dual-screen glory days? For everyone who loved the unique Surface Duo design and passport aspect ratio back in the day, have you finally settled into a Galaxy Z Fold 8?

So yeah... joined the cracked glass club today. Both back panels of my original Duo are shattered, but luckily the inner screens are fine and Iāve got a film holding the glass together for now.
Now Iām looking to cover up this mess and actually protect it properly. What setup are you guys running on your Duo 1?
Are you just rocking skins + stock bumpers, or using some cool sleeves/pouches?
Also super curious about 3D-printed options, has anyone printed cases or bumpers off Thingiverse/Printables? Howās the fit, and does it still let the Duo fold back flat? Would love to see photos or get some STL recommendations!

It came with 12. Stock OS from what I understand. However, problem is security and stuff. That said what OS have you replaced the old one? Is Duo DE really the only option? I love to tinker and wouldnāt mind working on something that would work on the SD1 but how realistic is this? Love to hear some thoughts or what youāre using for the OS.
