Im a taking a voice class for school and i thought it'd be a good way for me to learn to sing, but appearntly im so bad at it my teacher told me to go to the disability center to see if there was a tutor available.

Im thinking about dropping the class for now lol

No matter what anyone says, I never feel good about my voice or believe I have any real talent. I know I've improved so much since my first show, yet somehow I still feel I'm at square one. And it genuinely is to a point i have no idea if i'm good or bad. I tend to lean towards the middle, where i dont see myself as good but i dont see myself as bad if that makes sense. I have the honor of playing Eponine at my local theater, and have gotten lead after lead for the last 2 years, even in plays, but at the end of the day I still feel so incredibly untalented. (Elsa, Eurydice, Beth March) In this video i wasnt really going all out since my family was home and obviously needed to clear my throat 💀 But i know i was tense, i'm not that tense on stage generally.

The more I dig into this song the more I realize how well written it is! Let me know how you feel about the singing, it's certainly not perfect

Okay singers please help me because I’m genuinely asking this from a vocal technique standpoint 😭 Stella Lefty’s singing is SO unpleasant to my ear and I cannot figure out exactly what she’s doing that makes me feel that way. And I’m asking partly because I’m studying voice and I literally want to know what NOT to do lol.
One thing I notice is how much she spreads/widens her mouth when she sings. She almost always looks like she’s smiling through the vowel, and something about the sound feels really spread and harsh to me. But I know “I don’t like her voice” isn’t an actual technical explanation, so what am I actually hearing? Is it the vowels? Too much brightness? Nasality? Tongue position? Tension? Placement? Is it just a stylistic choice?
And this leads into a bigger question I’ve been thinking about. What happened to the BIG vocalists??
We had Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, etc. Then the next generation gave us Ariana Grande, who regardless of whether you like her music, is obviously an insane vocalist.
Who is the Gen Z equivalent of that??? Like who is THE vocalist of this generation?
I feel like so much popular music now is whispery, cursive, intentionally under-sung, or more focused on having an interesting tone than actually having a huge instrument. Which is fine, but where are the singers that make you go WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT NOTE 😭 Where are the huge belts? The agility? The range? The dynamics? The singers you hear live and immediately know they have spent YEARS learning how to use their instrument?
I’m studying classical voice now on top of contemporary singing and the more I learn about the actual mechanics of singing, the more I appreciate how insane the great vocalists really were.
So genuinely, what is Stella Lefty doing that makes her voice sound so unpleasant to me? Especially that really wide/smiley mouth position? And who do you think is Gen Z’s Mariah/Whitney/Ariana? Not someone who sounds like them, but someone with that level of VOCAL ability who people will still be talking about 20 years from now.
I want BIG VOCALS BACK 😭

I’m a 16 year old guy, and i’ve been a songwriter for 1 and a half years, and over the course of that period, i have written maybe 200-300 songs; 17-20 songs per album across my 8 written albums and the other are miscellaneous. I kind of really wanna become a pop star. Ive tried singing, and people told me my voice has a sweet and innocent lilt to it, rather than it being high pitched, and that was the reason i was denied a more coarse and egoistic character in my school play and given a charming character (everyone loved it and i got micro-famous in my school and even the principal and teachers called me the name of my character lol) and i’ve shared my voice to only my 2 best friends because i’m kind of insecure about it. I don’t know if its just because my puberty started late or if my singing is just really bad, but it’s like, i can sing comfortably at only a certain level of voice, like if i make it high/low pitched, it begins to crack, and i can’t hold a steady note at those pitches or it wavers. Will i ever be able to sing better? My voice cracks even when i talk, and my voice hasn’t fully deepened yet cause my adam’s apple is still forming. But is there any advice? I’m studying to become an engineer but singing is my dream. I can drop some of my songs so you guys can know i’m good in at least something music related

I have a fair bit of experience as a singer, I minored in music in college after taking 6+ years of private lessons as a teen/child and have been in several bands/choirs/groups throughout my life. However I notice that, as a soloist some people seem to react negatively to the timbre of my voice and from what I can gather it is due to how nasal my tone is, especially when belting. I briefly went to a coach who had "singing less through the nose" as his number one goal for me after just one lesson.

However, I think about the singers I enjoy covering the most and like to listen to most and grey are also often called "nasally". Like a lot of the grunge greats - Layne Stanley, Chris Cornell etc. as well as many many Broadway greats. If my goal is to have a sound that slices through like that, is it so bad to have a nasally tone? Should I be trying to mitigate it or work *with* it?

What do you pros/experienced singers/coaches out there think about nasal singing?

I'm not doing strenuous singing like belting. In fact it's the opposite I sing softly 90% of the time, yet my voice never fails to get hoarse, inflamed, and painful. I'm so confused as to why this keeps happening. The closest thing I have to an answer would be lack of compression which means excess air is coming through and making my vocal chords inflamed? Idk how to fix that

Im preparing a solo for my church's anniversary performance and my director mentioned that a specific part of my singing in this clip is "wrong." However she left it up to me to figure out what the exact issue is and Ive hit a wall listening to it myself. I really want to put in the effort to fix this before the live performance especially since its the start of the song. Thank you in advance for taking the time to listen to this!

I'm 38, and after struggling for 20 years, I feel like I've really found my voice for the first time.

I love how I sound, and I'm proud of how far I've come, but being almost 40 and not having many published songs, it's hard not to be depressed and anxious about the limited time I have left before my voice is past it's prime.

I've been reading that early 40s is when your voice is at it's peak, and it just starts to go downhill from there.

I know all I can do is just enjoy the time I have left, but it's still hard to not let it bother me sometimes.

Learning to sing is by far the most counter-intuitive thing I've ever done, and I've given up so many times throughout my life. It just sucks to finally be at a good place with it now, and know that I may not have even 10 years of a decent voice left.

A couple of times I have heard people that have experience in singing suddenly start singing a song (without prior warmup, just for fun) and I notice their voice sounds very clean and I’m a beginner in singing and I would say I don’t sound very clean and I would like to sound more clean, like I’m hitting the right pitches but maybe it sounds a bit airy? I think it might be about the breath support but I’m not sure how to have proper breath support either, does anyone have tips or ideas maybe?

I am a self-taught adult singer . I am noticeably pitchy and sometimes off key. Also I find it hard to match the timing of some phrases. My practice session is me singing along to my favorite songs on youtube for 20-30 minutes. Low effort and I enjoy it.

I also have a multi-track recorder I use to record my guitar and vocals. So sometimes I will record the youtube song to it then layer on my vocals. Then I will compare how it sounds. It is easy to spot the mistakes that way. But I often find myself listening too much to my recordings vs. actually practicing singing. Hence why singing directly along to youtube on my phone seems a better use of my time?

What should every singer be focusing on on a regular day no matter where they are at ability wise, and what is the general approach for pro level singers?

So... I'm an amateur singer, or rather I would like to consider me one. I'm not so confident lately.

Hi all, looking for fellow medicated ADHDers to weigh in. Started taking Vyvanse a few months ago and it seems like it’s always drying me out to the point where my cords feel tight and I’m just not at my normal quality or ability. I do my best to hydrate. I’ve read about electrolytes so I’ve been trying to do 1 Gatorade a day. It hasn’t been doing much. I’ve also tried one of those droppers to put in drinks that are minerals that are supposed to help with hydration. It may have worked a bit (by no means solving the issue completely), but tasted nasty lol.

Just seeing if honestly the only answer is to not medicate days leading up to singing, or if someone has found a way to combat this. Any help is appreciated, thanks friends!

I feel like I'm really struggling with my training. Like a lot of beginners, I probably have a tendency to drag my chest voice up as I sing into the upper 3rd and 4th octaves. This usually results in a very heavy feeling Eb4, E4, and F4. My instructor has been a little eager to assign me a fach - Baritone - but it's hard to blame her due to my speaking voice and the weight I carry down low.

While rare, though, I know that some tenors can have voices similar to mine. When I "shed" some of the vocal weight in the upper 3rd and 4th octaves, I can sing a full voiced F#4 and even G4 with less strain than my E4s in my "fuller" (or heavier) configuration. This is not falsetto mind you. Curious more, sometimes when exercising some of my fuller sound I can get a flash of discomfort in my larynx in the zona de passaggio. I'm starting to get really confused about what is going on here.

Are there any lower tenors out there who felt like they had easier access through their passaggio and middle 4th octave (F4 - A4) when dropping some of their weight? This isn't falsetto nor a shrill sound, I can find a good middle ground between my breathier exaggerated lightening of my voice and my full chest sound and carry a very full and relaxed sounding F4-G4. Or is this just how baritones access that range as well?

I feel like I'm going crazy. It's like my instructors and my body are telling me different things..It's very confusing.

I’m sorry if this is such a stupid question, but I’ve always dreamt of being a singer and I suppose if I cannot sing on a stage I can always sing in the comfort of a small booth maybe. Except I’ve never done it before and I’m very nervous about the process of it.

I was hoping (this upcoming January) that I could book a recording booth for my birthday, like maybe an hour or 2 two of just me and maybe my sister for moral support haha. But mostly just me, and maybe record some music of my own or song covers?

I don’t know how it all goes, I’ve never produced music before so I don’t know how to start. I’m willing to bring lyrics and a tune if it’s supposed to be original work, but the only instrument I know how to play is flute ( and very amateur at that) so I can’t sing it and record at the same time😅

Im a newer singer i’ve learning for a whole and just made a new acc to do covers and promote my music. I posted my first ever cover today and I was received a good amount of likes and a few saves. I thought my interpretation was kinda decent. but when I check my comments there were only a few hate comments, I since have privated the video and wanted to know it is a problem with my execution me being aware i was singing in a new tone (to feed into the algorithm).Singing in front of people was something i want to get comfortable but i don’t know if I should go back the drawing board or not atm.
