Anywho. It happened to me. Ordered a rtx 4070 ti super and got a 3070 in the box when I got it. 🥲

Ebay is very buyer-sided. I would do a return and escalate as needed.

Make sure it's an "Item not as described" return. It forces a return even if it says no returns.

This is what led me to close my eBay account. I sold something that I specified multiple times that it was non-functional and for parts only. The guy opened a case saying it didn't work, got the return, then kept one of the parts out of the box and said he didn't see it in there. No matter how much I protested I got to eat the return with a missing part.

I miss the early days of eBay where we sent/received money orders in the (snail) mail and shipped packages without tracking numbers and somehow everything went perfectly 99.9% of the time.

Now that it's super easy to be a scumbag and have no repercussions. Back in the day if you were a scumbag and cheated people you got punched in the mouth. Now it's super hard to punch them since they're online and you've never actually met.

In my opinion its less desperate and more scummy. Desperate people rob stores, or shop lift because they need the money right then, or the food or products. They normally don't concoct elaborate scams online. Those are just morally bankrupt, shitty opportunistic people.

Yeah, I've been screwed by ebay as a seller before on one occasion. I don't sell much anymore, but I thank my lucky stars it was only once.

They recently changed the return policy on items sold as “for parts or repair”. It’s 3 days for the buyer to report an issue otherwise that’s it. They can’t pull the garbage of “it doesn’t work” just because.

I sell on eBay as my primary source of income. I have only had something like this happen a few times. I just chalk it up to a "cost of doing business." Man O man, does it piss me off when it happens though! :)

I got shafted as a buyer for the first time and I was kinda shocked. Guy sent me a premium part that would not fit, ebay sided with him and now I have a $75 paper weight.

I'll never sell again because of this. I had video of me packaging the item, labeling it, and dropping it in the mailbox and they still sided with the buyer.

Did you mark not working for repair I've all ways described them as salvage parts no returns The only time some one tried to return I just called ebay and they fixed it.

A year or two ago I bought a GTX 1080ti off eBay for a project. Box , CPU cooler....no GPU when I opened the box. It was literally just the box and the cooler assembly. Returned it not as described. The seller asked "what was wrong with it" 🤦

I told them there was no card. Refund nearly $200

Yeah I've bought upwards of like 200+ things on eBay over the years and the handful of issues I had got resolved pretty painlessly. I'm sure bad apples are annoying as hell for sellers though.

That being said, those protections are essential for when brainless people sell something and have no idea what they're doing with it. Like the guy who shipped a hard drive to me in an empty box with no padding.

I bought a 4070ti off eBay last month and did this for the first time ever. Recorded myself unboxing it just in case it was a box of rocks.

I'm not sure how much this "evidence" would actually hold up, but it's better than nothing.

and always record while packaging for return shipments (or any shipment for that matter) to show you did your part of the job adequately.

it makes pointing the blame appropriately much easier when you can show how well you packed something before handing it off to the courier if it happens to arrive in shambles.

Fr any big money purchase needs to be recorded when opened

I bought all my new parts from a trusted site and still recorded the opening, never know who'd pop it open during shipping to grab RAM or the GPU

FWIW eBay won't take video record. But if you have to sue the scammer in the court, video showing unopened box on all sides before opening it and finding different items would be accepted.

I bought a 4070ti off eBay last month without issue.

But like every eBay purchase, when browsing I very critically evaluated both the listing and the seller. How they type, where they're located, their profile history, everything. And then I purposefully chose not to buy from certain sellers because they seemed more shady, and paid slightly more from a more trustworthy looking seller. Got a great functioning card exactly as advertised.

The seller based out of Miami with a blurry picture of the box, a product description that says "card work great no issue" and is $100 cheaper than every other listing? That's gonna be a hard pass from me.

Yea Florida, California, and/or China with a price that’s too good to be true with a sus description is pretty self explanatory at this point. Not sure what OP’s situation was but I would bet they dealt with one if not several of these red flags.

I sold an RC tank on eBay back in 2009 and everything was included with it as if it was brand new. The guy that received it said I didn't ship the battery with it and immediately began the process of fucking me over. The PayPal account that I used under my mom's name (because I was a literal child) finally closed last week after having been disused and locked for 17 fucking years. I will never sell anything on eBay even if I was guaranteed to make a smooth sale.

Yep, happened to me buying a Steam Controller. My own stupid fault really, but the icing on the cake was the seller accusing me of stealing the controller. They even produced a bunch of bogus evidence

As others have said though, file an Item Not As Described return. At least in the UK, the seller bears the burden of proof and you have 3 business days by eBay’s own policy to come to an agreement. Or do as I did and continually ask to be escalated in the Chat until you get someone who can override the 3 day wait.
