I like matte because the monitor I decided to get off specs is matte

324

u/Nikwoj 1d ago

I’m not sure which one I have so I will just sit this one out

206

u/JustAPotato38 4090 5800X3D 1d ago

whichever one it is it's the better one

41

u/PhatCatTax 1d ago

No the other one is the better one. You need to debate yourself to sustain the superiority of slightly different flavors of technology and I'm not just saying this because your spending will decrease costs for me thanks to supply and demand.

11

u/kyosheru 1d ago

Actually, neither one is better because I heard a rumor about the true “end game” monitor. It’s going to be leaked next week, and it will be available whenever it gets announced that it will be available and will have all the specs that you want because it’s the true “end game” monitor. I know you’re curious about those specs, but it’s actually better that you don’t know what specs those are. All you need to know is that this will be the true “end game” monitor. What finish will it have? It will have “end game” monitor finish.

3

u/PhatCatTax 1d ago

Ok. I believe you. Take my money for a pre-order despite me not knowing you or ever hearing about the company!

both have flaws. Matte offers a more consistent experience over various environments, glossy can give you the best experience, but only if you have properly covered its cons (bad in light, high mirror finish, so you can see yourself in the monitor, especially if you're wearing brighter clothing.)

Why does Matte OLED, the superior technology, not simply eat the other technologies?

4

u/JustAPotato38 4090 5800X3D 1d ago

IPS has the numbers advantage in an all-out fight they would simply overwhelm the OLEDs

My main monitor is a 17 year old 26" TN panel, which is of course vastly superior to all you guys' fancy modern 4K OLED nonsense /s

Apparently they forgot to implement planned obsolescence, and it'll probably work for another decade.

I like matte because its was the cheapest when I bought It. I wouldnt pay and extra 150-200€ for a detail. And you know what? Its great! I couldnt care less If there is something a bit better in specific situations.

28

u/Fauked 2d ago

It goes both ways too. Matte is better in other situations.

I didn't know that matte or glossy were options but I simply googled for the best oled 34 inch monitors and picked one that looked like it had no flaws and I decided on MSI MPG 341CQPX QD-OLED, and I couldn't be happier.

I have glossy for the same reason. It wasn't even a factor in my decision, I didn't even have matte options in my region back in 2023.

13

u/Able-Swing-6415 1d ago

Idk.. like glossy is slightly better but you'll rue the day you bought it if you ever change the setup to have the sun shine on it.

Matte is the right choice if you don't really care is what I'm saying.

I sold my Lenovo legion go a few years ago.

On one hand, it was my introduction into pc gaming. But ultimately, the 90 min battery life and the reflections is what caused me to move to desktop. I thought it’d be good at airports or in public, but all I saw was reflections anytime I wasn’t in a dark environment.

In my 20's, I had a severe depression. Life took a big left turn and I burnt out trying to adjust, so I retreated into my apartment and played Squad and Witcher 3 for hours on end. I didn't have the energy for anything else, except crying.

During loading screens, I would see my tired, drained, exhausted and lifeless face with sunken eyes in the reflection. For a brief moment, I would feel sad to have become a shell of my former self. Then the game resumed and I was distracted again.

For weeks and months, this went on. Wake up, make coffee, boot up the PC, play games.

I eventually got better, took longer and longer walks, went out with friends more once I had the energy. And slowly, my life was getting on track again. I met a lovely girl who I fell in love with and I used all my strength to pick myself back up to be with her.

Then one rainy day with no plans, I booted up the PC. I started Witcher 3, and while loading my saved game, I saw myself in the reflection again. I had light in my eyes. A spark. Life. Even though I was just relaxing in front of the screen, I could see and feel myself alive again.

My glossy screen showed me the deepest blacks in my life. And it taught me that light comes back, just like the reflections on the screen.

People buy a top-end panel but don't know that it requires optimal viewing conditions, otherwise there will be a loss in quality.

A darkened room with or without diffused lighting is the base.

371

u/ImaginaryBagels 2d ago

Same with audio, people will buy a full home theatre surround system then stack the speakers on top of each other in the corner

36

u/Total_Werewolf_5657 9800X3D/5090/64Gb/X670E/S90D 65" 1d ago

Facts. There are so many typical problems with the audio that it's impossible to count.

21

u/kiochikaeke 1d ago

I found that unless you go full audiophile taking things like the room acoustics into account it's better to just buy a decent pair of headphones or IEM.

18

u/Total_Werewolf_5657 9800X3D/5090/64Gb/X670E/S90D 65" 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes. A good pair of headphones and a sound card will be better than cheap, wrongly placed "Hi-Fi".

11

u/Peon-Hyjal 1d ago

It's kinda wild, I have a old stereo amplifier, two bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer, all gotten second hand, and it blows people away even though it's "just 2.1".

8

u/Total_Werewolf_5657 9800X3D/5090/64Gb/X670E/S90D 65" 1d ago

People just don't know that good stereo is always better than bad "5.1/7.1". And multi-channel sound only makes sense when you have a separate room for a home theater where you can properly place the audio.

I myself only have Topping D50 3 + Pioneer A-50 + Dynaudio DM 2/7. And in my circumstances, this is the maximum that makes sense, and it sounds great. Everything second hand for about $1200 total.

Good headphones and a sound card from second hand will cost <$250. They won't take up any space and can be used at any time of day. This is roughly why they will be a universal, inexpensive option.

A step forward would be a good bookshelf speakers + amplifier + DAC from second hand. But this will cost about $700 and will require organizing the space.

I have a couple of Kef Q100 speakers on my computer desk, a subwoofer and a Loxjie A30 amp. It is far superior for music listening to the 5.1 system I have in the living room which is an Onkyo amp and a bunch of Infinity speakers.
I also have some planar IEMs and some expensive Sennheiser headphones. I never use either. I much prefer good sounding speakers to headphones/IEMs.
I got the Q100 speakers for about $240 for the pair when they were on closeout because Kef were replacing them with the Q150. The Loxjie amp was $170 and the subwoofer was about $100 and could probably do with upgrading to something better. Total of about $510.
You can build a great sounding PC sound system for less than that. Micca MB42X speakers sound great and a pair of them is $99. I had those before the Kef. There are much cheaper class D amps too. So for around the same price or cheaper than my Sennheiserr headphones, anyone can build a great sounding speaker system for their PC. $100 for speakers, $100 for a subwoofer and $50 for a reasonable amp is about $50 less than I paid for decent headphones.
Like you, people are shocked when they hear how good it sounds.
A lot of people think that they need to buy speakers made for PC like the Logitech Z625 if they want decent sound. Those retail for about $200. For $50 more you can have a system that will blow them away.

6

u/SaltyBallsnacks 1d ago

I crossed this bridge when I released I had spent multiple hours researching optimal aggregate fill for a 300 dollar set of speaker stands I didn't own.

14

u/IhasCandies 1d ago

Then they’ll leave the equalizer untouched, all faders at 0, complain about the muffled sound, and the bass not hitting.

10

u/Any_Show_5160 1d ago

TBF, why is it left to a tone deaf idiot like myself to adjust something so important, imagine buying a car that pulls to the right while driving, left under braking, snaps into some gears and slips in others unless you tweak some sliders to the right spot.

11

u/TheTexasHammer 1d ago

You have to adjust it to the space it is in. The manufacturer has no idea what that space will look like or will have in it. It's literally impossible to make a setting that works in all locations and situations. Just tune it to what sounds good to you. You don't need to be Mozart

u/Any_Show_5160 1d ago

The real reason to get a matte screen, is to not having to see the reflection of that fat, ugly blob sitting in front of the screen, every time the screen goes dark. /s (kinda)

118

u/gmishaolem 1d ago

I don't see why this even has to be a self-insult. Part of a game is dark and moody, and having the image mixed with my reflection is going to ruin the art of the scene. Reflections are just bad no matter what.

17

u/_Buldozzer 1d ago

It's obviously a joke, but yes you're right, the reflections can be annoying.

18

u/SwimAd1249 1d ago

The real reason to get a glossy screen is to motivate yourself to become hot af. Only downside is you won't be playing any games cause you'll be too busy gooning to your own reflection all day long.

80

u/MilliyetciPapagan 2d ago

I have a matte oled. I will get blackout curtains as well but man...

Trust me I want to LOVE matte but I just can't. The whites and bright colors show a lot of graininess compared to my fiancee's glossy oled. I'd go with glossy if I could but somehow they are a lot more expensive.

8

u/Seienchin88 2d ago

I have a glossy fairly expensive MSI and the colors really pop and it looks almost like looking at beautiful images behind clear glass.

My TV however from LG is even more expensive and I’d argue it’s neither matte nor is it "glossy" (I assume it’s glossy but less flashy than the MSI monitor) and it’s more pleasant to look at long term. Things look actually real instead of too flashy and colorful.

7

u/jarail 9800X3D | 5090 | 96GB | 4k 240hz QD-OLED 1d ago

That just sounds like a settings issue. Most screens have a bunch of different modes depending on if you want a natural look, bright high contrast colors, a specific color standard, etc.

7

u/Particular_Wear_6960 1d ago

That was my thought, like what? Complaining about too much color? Just turn the saturation down. Feels like bitching about too much money, your car is too fast, drives too good :p

Not all microfiber cloths are equal. There's varying degrees of softness. A nice cloth and distilled water is what people seem to recommend.

I used to use distilled water and a fresh microfiber cloth to clean my OLED, but it has some significant burn-in now and I don't care as much, and I just use tap water and whatever old microfiber I have lying around.

I shake the cloth to get most of the dust off, dip it in the tap water, and just clean the screen. Which I have to do fairly often because my cat has like some allergy or autoimmune issue and sneezes snot all over constantly.

The tap water and dirty old cloth works fine. I don't have any scratches yet. Even when I check by turning it off and shining a flashlight onto it at an angle.

Samsung G8 OLED, for what it's worth. It's glossy too.

u/TEMU_PHILIPS 1d ago

5

u/Chromana i7-13700K, 32GB, RTX 5080 1d ago

You can tell it's a glossy monitor because of the way that it is.

188

u/TheLegendD4RK 2d ago

The colors pop more because there is no matt anti reflective layer Infront of the colors which normally blurs the image a small amount, enough to give the colors less vibrance compared to glossy

11

u/jb_in_jpn 1d ago

Right - it just looks heaps better, especially since I have OLED. This meme is saying gloss is lame?

I get bitching about the blacks, on an oled, what i've never understood is all that moaning about the nits. Who cares if it's bright enough to burn my retinas, i'm not gonna go game on a beach with my desktop PC, i'm gonna be in my room with the brightness set at 40%

62

u/-Manosko- 9800X3D|32GB@6000|5070Ti&5800X3D|32GB@3800|RTX3080&OLED DECK 2d ago

It matters for a proper HDR experience, but other than that I’m mostly on the same page as you.

51

u/SnowflakeMonkey 2d ago

Nits in hdr equals more details, not just brightness

14

u/decadent-dragon 1d ago

Yeah until there’s a bright scene that burns you eyeballs out

5

u/Time-Maintenance2165 1d ago

That's not inherently a bad thing. I actually like a bit of that.

4

u/brickson98 1d ago

You’re getting downvoted, but me too.

A scene where the character steps out of a dark area into a very bright one and has to squint?

https://giphy.com/gifs/yJFeycRK2DB4c
Immersion.

But, in reality, people act like you can’t do HDR calibration to cap peak brightness. I’ve never had a scene that’s actually bright enough to be uncomfortable. People make stuff up.

3

u/RealRatAct 1d ago

I got an ASUS PG32UQX mini-led which is insanely freaking bright, apparently 1400 nits. Get flashbanged in game, get flashbanged irl. Love it.

Nobody cares about high nits for regular content, but it's a requirement for a good HDR experience. My monitor does ~400 nits in true black mode which is just not good enough for HDR. But the alternative is ABL, which is even worse.

7

u/atanamayansantrafor Desktop 2d ago

Bro any decent light 350 nits is not enough. Most OLEDs can’t even do proper 250 nits.

Am I the only one who likes glossy? If it's indoors, I'm probably only going to buy glossy.

15

u/TwoBionicknees 1d ago

matte makes me actually pissed off. Way way back in the day when i was buying new monitors every year because the technology was moving fast I got a matte screen without realising it (it wasn't well defined back then) and i was completely confused why my new higher def and 'better' screen looked like someone smeared vaseline all over it and it had this blur feel to it.

Matte screens just make me feel like i changed my glasses prescription to be just slightly off and make everything just slightly fuzzy.

glossy every time.

4

u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 4090 all by itself no other components 1d ago

same. love everything else about my oled but the matte pisses me off, it's visible during gaming like you're looking through a slightly smudged glass window. instead of seeing the game sometimes i get pulled out and am looking at the surface of my monitor instead

5

u/ddevilissolovely 1d ago

instead of seeing the game sometimes i get pulled out and am looking at the surface of my monitor instead

That's exactly the kind of problem people have with glossy.. I personally have a much easier time tuning out a constant slight texture than reflections that are both stronger and less predictable. Quality of the coating also comes into play, there are screens that are in-between.

Matte looks incredible unless you deal with bright whites or blues etc, then you see a grain. I play flight sims and learned this the hard way. Yet as a matte owner, I will die defending it for flight sim use as I am not getting another one.

u/Zandonus rtx3060Ti-S-OC-Strix-FE-Black edition,whoosh, 24gb ram, 5800x3d 2d ago

Matte. IPS. Looks good from all angles. Prefer the way it shows color.

71

u/Goonalips 2d ago

Until it's night time and it's a very dark scene and the IPS glow is in multiple corners. Even higher end IPS panels can have bad IPS glow.

17

u/Kuuppa22 2d ago

I "solved" that by placing small desk lamp behind the monitor facing the wall so it's not completely dark room but still pretty dim :)

That light placement seemed to be the best because it isn't annoying coming from back of the monitor but makes the ips glow much more unnoticiable at least for me.

12

u/Goonalips 2d ago

That's a neat trick. It would trick your eyes into thinking the screen was darker too. Legendary advice

3

u/doodullbop 1d ago

I do the same thing, and basically I never turn it off. Small LED desk lamp with a nice warm color tilted 45 degrees up facing the wall behind my monitor. I prefer the room to be dim and I've found that this diffuse lighting really reduces eye strain.

11

u/Clean__Cucumber 2d ago

that depends on what type of IPS you have, edge lit stuff will always be worse than smth like a mini LED

my edge lit IPS thankfully doesnt have much of a problem yet and still looks fairly good next to my OLED. yes even in complete darkness with a black background

I still think that for PC usage a OLED isnt worth the money (yes will get me many downvotes i know)

same. Also perfect text clarity which I need when I work from home, and no worry about burn it. No halos from Mini LED which would annoy me in space games or editing astrophotography pics, honestly for my use case IPS is still king. And high res is affordable. They‘re also fast. It‘s kind of the jack of all trades, master of none but that doesn‘t mean its bad or obsolete.

A bright, glossy display with good anti-reflective coating is way better than a matte display because the colors just pop so much better on a glossy screen.

Glossy sounds like an awful idea lmao, i already dont like watching stuff on my TV cause of the glare, i prefer my monitor since its the same fov anyways bc of the distance

also would rather not have the lights off if its not bright out, i like not straining my eyes contrary to popular belief

3

u/Proman4713 1d ago
  1. Glossy has better colours
  2. Matte prevents light glare, which ruins your colours on glossy anyway
  3. Glossy makes you see your face every time you sit in front of it

I choose matte

18

u/ultraboomkin 2d ago

I have a matte and a glossy. With the lights turned on, the glossy is unusable. The matte is perfectly usable with the lights on.

In the dark, both look the same anyway.

Matte is better.

Gentlemen, gentlemen, the only right answer is that the best monitor is the one that is affordable or a good bargain.

2

u/Blessed-22 1d ago

I got a glossy OLED because I prefer the picture clarity, and I control the light level my office so that reflections aren't a problem.

2

u/SSNikki 1d ago

I've had 2 glossy monitors and the rest were matte. First monitor was an HP with glossy finish, it was beautiful. It used to drive me nuts to lose details or color accuracy just to avoid looking into a mirror.

Current monitor is high-end OLED with gloss, I absolutely love it. Yeah, I can see myself in it, and I'm grinnin every time. When am I gonna take a 27' OLED into the sun?

2

u/Jimmylobo 1d ago

Had a matte screen, now have a glossy one. The glossy one definitely wins in clarity and colors, but expectedly loses to bright environment. So, no surprises here.

2

u/LivingVerinarian96 1d ago

I got the reflection of my gfs screen on my matte oled and it slightly annoys me.

2

u/Varlin 5090 9950x3d 64g 6000 240hz 4k :^) 1d ago

QDOLED glossy is peak. I have had the monitor for about a year and it still blows my minds with the quality. Maybe I am weird but I game with the lights off similar to watching a movie, so I have had literally 0 issues or complaints at all.

2

u/Hlidskialf 9800X3D 3060TI 1d ago

I hate choosing monitors.

Every single one has a HUGE flaw. Like they were design to always be close to perfection but still one big flaw.
