If you invested $1,000 in SanDisk shares 12 months ago, you could sell for about $39,500 now.
If you sold them 3 weeks ago, you'd have $46,500.
With Micron, you'd only have $8,200.

It was actually cheaper, depending how much you gamed (i.e. new game purchase and not paying a sub to play online using your own connection P2P like on consoles), from about 2008 to about 2014

ironic me posting this on a subreddit called r/pcmasterrace, but genuinely why has it always been this thing where a lot of pc players are so smug about having “the superior way to play”? yes, performance-wise of course everything is going to be better on pc. but this is ignoring the accessibility of consoles and their easy learning curve for games, AS WELL as the fact that most triple A games are made with console gamers in mind and only optimized for pc a couple years after their initial release. i have an over $2k setup and have been playing on pc for a long time, but it just reeks of coping and trying to justify spending thousands of dollars on something that has a good amount of disadvantages to a much cheaper option

All I see on this and the gaming sub is a bunch of PC guys who cannot fathom their would be ANY reason to buy a console over a PC if it isn’t for physical media or exclusives.
Cannot fathom that a console come complete out of the box, takes not setup, works all day everyday, no windows updates or driver updates, all in one party, friend and game chat system.
On top of that they all hardware and supply chain logistics gods and know how much the next console is going to cost (they all swear it will be over a grand) and that no one can afford it.
The next gen consoles will sell out day one and no the cost isn’t going to matter. A few less people might not buy PS6, and instead buy a Helix or a PC.

All I see on this and the gaming sub is a bunch of PC guys who cannot fathom their would be ANY reason to buy a console over a PC if it isn’t for physical media or exclusives.
A number do. A number also used to push back against the bullshit narrative that a $500 PC was competitive with a $500 console. They're usually downvoted all the same if they aren't bending over for Sony on every topic though.

u/NYC_Noguestlist Jul 10 '26
My thing also is that I don't want to set all that shit up and have to deal with rampant cheating in every game. It's starting to infest consoles now because of cross-play, but it's magnitudes worse on PC (literally can't play a lot of older CODs because they've been mega hacked). That's why I can't take people who don't see the very real issues with PC gaming seriously.

But I’m still debating with myself wether or not what you say is holding up (because you still need to pay for online and games are full price, and will become even more expensive).
I’ll edit when I’m done debating between me and me.

Very few console players are going to switch to PCs. We like to believe that can happen, but if you speak to console users, you will have a better idea of the actual reality of it.
Console users care for ease of use, up front costs, couch gaming and are often tied to a particular brand and exclusives.
PC gaming is becoming prohibitively expensive these days and the kind of stuff we love about PCs, such as versatility, power, flexibility and upgradability etc., does not appeal to the same extent to a console first gamer.
Edit: Adding the fact that I have both a PC and a PS5. The latter has been collecting dust for the past couple years, and the last game I played on it was Ghost of Tshushima Director's Cut. I might play GTA VI on it. But otherwise, all my gaming is on PC these days.

Not only the ease of use as in no need to install OS, drivers or software, but also the fact that they do not need to know anything about the performance levels of different components. A game says their preferred console ? They can play it. Instead on PC, you need to check the requirements sheet and understand how the components mentioned in the sheet compares to the components in your PC. It sure is a small commitment to understand at a glance, can you run a game, and at what level you can.
Only way to get around this constant checking of requirements sheet is to cave in and buy the latest and greatest setup every now and then. By doing so, you ensure you can run any game there is. And that can lead to spending silly amounts of money, so it might not be a reasonable thing to do.
PC gaming is for enthusiasts, or at least for those who are more into studying. You need to figure out specs, you need to learn where to safely get games, what you need to install to do what you want on PC. After overcoming the initial learning curve, you can get the system to be on the level of easiness as consoles if you so desire. Like you can set steam to launch on boot, to launch in big picture mode and set your OS to autologin. This way you get the console experience of just turning your system on, grabbing a controller and laying comfortably in your sofa to play some games.

Your first para para is on point. I own a PS5 as well, but jave hardly used it at all since I bought it in 2021.
On the PC, messing with quality settings is actufun for me. I do that for each new game I play and spend time optimizing my experience.
That's not what console users are looing for at all.

I'd go one step further as to point out that games on consoles tend to be made backwards compatible for at least a generation meaning you don't need to keep up with hardware to use the software unless you want to enter into the next gen.
Where-as PC is constantly upgrading to the next generation increasing the requirements on PC owners over and over again. So it's an incremental cost you have to account for. I couldn't keep up with that cost. i've had the same console for 8 years. No changes. Forked out for a Ps5 so i can play the current gen games i wanna play. $500 vs $500= just for the base components of a decent PC at least where i live. Affordability really does play a big factor for some of us.
I like to huff copium and believe one day i can afford a PC but for now I'll stick with me Ps5 until the ps8 comes out lol

u/Rosti_LFC Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
I dunno, I tend to upgrade my PC once every 6-7 years and that generally works out for me. I'm also not buying the absolute best kit each generation and I'm still getting that sort of longevity. Most new releases will still work on specs that would be considered a good PC 8 years ago.
In 2011 I bought a gaming PC with GTX 550 Ti, in total it cost me about £800. Around 2014 I upgraded the GPU to a GTX 770, don't know what I paid but about £300. This lasted me until the end of 2020 when I got a new mobo, CPU and RTX 3070 for Cyberpunk 2077, at a cost of ~£1000. That's the PC I still have now in 2026 and it still works fine for new titles, albeit I generally can't expect to run things on high graphics settings.
I'd also note my 2016 spec build could still run Cyberpunk 2077 smoothly on low-ish graphics, and my wife still uses it as her gaming PC ten years later because the stuff she plays generally isn't demanding on hardware. Buying a launch PS4 (£350) and PS5 (£450) over the same period is definitely cheaper, about half the cost, but games cost more and you've also got to pay an annual subscription to play online.
If you care about always being able to play on bleeding edge graphic settings then constant PC upgrades get very expensive, but if you're happy just hitting a level of graphics that is comparable or better to what you typically get on a console anyway then it can be a lot more affordable and the timings between buying new parts are on a similar scale to console generations.

Prices of the currently discounted pre builds and gaming laptops aren’t nuts. Most of them are a bit stronger than the Steam machine. But those could be the last good deals. (1000 to 1500 for something that’s ok if you don’t play 4K at high settings). They are a lot faster than my 2020 gaming laptop.
I hope these things stay around, they make and sell those in high volumes, also much higher than the Steam machine. They come with bloat but you can get rid of that and you don’t need to think about drivers etc …

Oh yes. PS6 will still sell by millions. PC and consoles have different market targets. This meme is rather unrealistic. Most people won't want the hassle of having a pc for casual gaming. And for those who say that PC is easy and comparable, they are not.

Well not accurate. Cause PC components are kinda crazy expensive rn except for maybe the motherboard & cpu. Also its worse than 2020 cause everything affected by AI ram slop

Also not accurate because plenty of people STILL use the PS4 six years later, and they definitely didn't abandon it en mass in 2020.

I actually bought one last month. They're pretty cheap now and a PS4 game will always run fine on a PS4 no matter how old it is.

u/Velokieken Jul 10 '26
PS4 are dirt cheap over here. When I bought my PS5 the PS4 pro wasn’t much cheaper but the disc PS5 is now 650 euros here and PS4 are under a 100. It’s actually one of the best deals, the library is massive and it’s not like the graphics are horrible, it’s similar to the Switch 2. OG Switch is 300 is 3 times the price of a PS4 …

To be perfectly fair, at least in my experience, PS4s sound like jet engines regardless of what you're doing since most people don't bother to clean their consoles. Hell, even with a freshly cleaned PS4 and playing without a disc it'd be close to the volume of my 360 while it would be spinning a disc.
Then on the other hand my Xbox One has what I assume to be coil whine from the internal PSU and the HDD is possibly dying since it's second hand and old. Should probably replace those soon lol

I have got a PS5 and a PC. I built my PC before prices got as crazy as they are now. If I only had a PS5 today, I honestly don't know if I'd build a PC at current prices. I'd probably just stick with my PS5.
I also doubt the PS6 will sell poorly. If you spend enough time online, you would think no one is going to buy a PS6. But reality is often very different.

4
u/Kaze_Tora Jul 10 '26
I am waiting on that Linux change so much, my nvidia laptop would be awesome HTPC then 🙁 But for bed rotting you can do this setup, not super easy but not too complicated either:
1 - set your PC to turn on when power is detected
2 - plug it to smart outlet that you can turn on remotely, (or maybe you can get CEC to work with TV somehow.)
3 - enable steam big picture autostart, set your controller for mouse use in steam if needed to do something outside of steam.Still, consoles or just waaay more convenient, and that is still hard to beat without at least basic tech knowledge.

As much as I love my PC more than my consoles….
These people on social media make up less than 1% of PlayStation’s monthly active players. The petition has 250k signatures which is about 0.2% of the active players.
Meanwhile GTA6(digital only) is breaking records and selling PS5s like hotcakes so much so that it is causing supply issues with PS5. When GTA 6 gets that next gen upgrade do you think people will hold that integrity? There’s tons of pc players buying PS5s just for GTA6 on launch.
Even if the numbers increase to a considerable amount, do we really want them all coming here when we already suffer with insane prices due to shortages? 😢

Honestly, I don't think that's accurate at all. As much as I think Sony's gone full retard, the casuals, and honestly, most people don't care about losing physical releases.
Look at Steam, people are dumping billions on it without a second thought, and there's zero guarantee of long-term ownership since Valve has only "talked" about steps they'd take to ensure you don't lose access, but with the world we live in, licensing, DRM, etc. there's no guarantee even Valve would be able to 100% guarantee you'd get to keep all your purchases. The same, but to a lesser extent is true on the Ubisoft shop, Battle.net, EA's shop, etc. then you take a gander over at GoG, the one true bastion of full ownership, and it isn't seeing anywhere near the business of Steam, or heck, even EGS.
What does that say? That most just don't really care about owning their games like subs on Reddit, or any other social media would have you thinking. Most are probably just buying the games, playing through them, uninstalling and moving on because they don't have any intention of picking the game back up 10 years down the road, if anything, if they do get the itch, they'll probably look for a sequel first and play that versus going back and playing a game they already completed. That's not to say there aren't games that get revisited a lot, but those games are very few and very, very far between, and even then those are niche games that cater to a specific crowd.
Also, with the prices how they are now, not many are willing to drop $2k for a PC versus getting a $600 console that still has access to physical and has access to digital releases. I've already told myself if anything expensive in my PC fails, then I'll be gaming primarily on my Switch 2 until prices come down or I have enough saved to repair it.

If I look at gamers I know.
Not going to happen, some will move, most will not.
I game on everything, mostly pc, a bit of older handhelds and consoles exist for me for "old stuff" or Nintendo.
80%+ PC in my case, never less than that.
You can explain console gamers all the benefits of PC gaming, even cost wise, but also "PC is more than just for gaming".
But 99% of the time they don't fully get it, they will complain about what happens at Sony, complain about PS Plus cost every year (€72 euro a year here) and say "maybe I should switch to PC".
And then... nothing, they get that PS6, and go on from the point they already were at.
Which is fine, but that is why the picture above is (sadly) not going to happen.
And honestly PC gaming can be cheap, but the current market is a mess no matter if PC, console or even smartphones.

The main reason people play consoles is covenience, affordability, and ease of use
2
u/baddazoner Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
people are angry right now but console players are not going to move to PC it's delusional to think they will.
pc is not only more expensive by a mile but if they want a console like experience steam machine is the only option that's just buy and play - and it's expensive and the same power as a base ps5
ps6 will be around the same price as the steam machine and vastly more powerful than it they'll just buy it.

u/diepiebtd Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
Lol i think the reality is both doors are gonna have very little people until prices come down. You can't get a decent console or pc for less then $500 anymore and if you want any computer with specs that'll last more then a year or so your over $1000. Ebay is best place to get pc's at the moment if your lucky. Its honestly sad to see the computer I bought for $600 during cyber Monday 2 years ago is now over $1000 used online. Its rough until retail memory and graphics cards come back down in price.
I would never suggest someone like my dad or my tech illiterate gamer friends to switch from Xbox its just so convenient for them and pc would frustrate them for sure.
