“To Jennie - and wine and roses*! Gloria Steinem”
I met Gloria Steinem when my mom’s teachers’ union invited her to speak at a luncheon in 2003. I wasn’t planning to get the book but then I spilled wine on my neighbor’s copy so I had to buy one to replace hers. Totally worth it for this autograph, especially since she spelled my name right lol.
*a reference to the movie/song/poem lyric “days of wine and roses.”

Having a book signed by a CIA operative who helped destroy lives is pretty wild

CIA operative Gloria Steinem? Woman who purposefully killed momentum in movements to fuel more gender anger and ensure no one understands the class war? The one the CIA publicly bragged as a huge success? That Gloria?

I don't know why you're getting downvoted, these are established facts. Sometimes we have to take a closer look at people we thought of as heroes-- just because she became the face of an important movement doesn't necessarily mean she deserved the attention/accolades.
There are many, many worthy names that were a part of the same movement who just weren't considered front-page worthy at the time. It really helped to be white and blonde if you wanted media attention in the 60s.

For one, bots. She was an asset for decades, of course they'd continue the disinformation campaign after her death, they still have a population to control.
The thing that got her attention was being an asset. She was basically raised into it.
All the real humans are just dealing with cognitive dissonance or similar rage from having their idea challenged. It's typical for these threads. Most people simply can't accept that something they believed is wrong, they're been lots of wars about it and everything.

Wasn’t a degree of gender anger fairly justified at the time?

Sure, but she specifically derailed momentum to inflame further gender war shit that was nothing but people being angry. She fought against people making progress on the class war. If we win the class war, the gender battle is fucking over. It really is that simple.
Literally her life's work was making sure people were angry instead of productive.

Did historic gains in women’s equality come exclusively from people who weren’t angry about their circumstances?

u/lcl111 9h ago
No, but historic gains come from momentum and through assistance from allies. Her entire career was making sure women were angry instead of productive, as a population. It's fair to say she caused more harm than good, especially considering the CIA touts her as a success story for them.
If they think they won by investing in her, you and I lost.

If you agree gender anger was justified and that it resulted in historic gains to women’s equality, then it seems difficult to conclude that Steinem’s contributions were universally contrary to that.

You're right. Any amount of good that can be taken completely out of context makes someone worth celebrating. Hitler did a great job as Chancellor for this exact reason, thank you for offering my eyes. People were mad about the economy, and he fixed hyper inflation for a little bit. Doesn't matter that it was all a distraction so he could kill people, his scientist found new medicines! /S
Her literal entire career and public life was a CIA operation. The thing your trying to celebrate is the problem. You're celebrating that she did a good job at shopping up fever in the gender war, the thing she was paid to do by the organization that secretly funded the Nazis.
Indirectly, you're literally celebrating Nazi success.

Sounds dramatic but unfortunately doesn’t engage with the actual content of my comments. Do you believe Steinem’s legacy is unalloyed evil, akin to Nazism?

u/lcl111 6h ago
Yes. She tricked you into thinking she cared, but she literally worked her entire life to make sure you got nothing done. She was a peace time Nazi. I made that very clear, you just don't have the trading comprehension skills to follow this conversation, evidently. I'm done with your conversation. You either don't have the capacity to unbeaten or are a bot. You're not engaging with my responses, because you don't like them. That's a you problem.

What do you mean I don’t like them? So far, you’ve agreed with everything I’ve said, while getting madder and madder as evidenced by the devolution in readability of your comments. I can see why you would bow out now lol

It would help being specific because I don't know what you're talking about at all...
