List changes thread
Time to look at the future.
Confirmed leaving: May, Melksham, McDonald, McAdam, Campbell. The average age of our list drops by a full year with these changes!
Question mark: Mihochek. Can he or should he play on?
Likely to be delisted:
- Henderson and Johnson. Both are great VFL players but don't have it for the next level.
- Adams. 1 game in 4 years Has barely looked like cracking the senior team. Considering our need for a key defender this year but he still didn't get a game, he's clearly not up to it.
Out on contract, decisions to be made:
- Salem. Out of contract as an unrestricted free agent. Does he look elsewhere, or do we encourage him to look elsewhere? He appears a little slow for the modern game but could look good in the right system. The Bombers would be smart to get him for leadership reasons.
- Laurie. 6 seasons in. Showed a bit in a few games late this year but then regressed to usual form against the Dogs and Blues. IMO he's had enough chances and I'd prefer to turn over for some youth with more promise. If we keep, 1 year deal.
Trade option:
- Rivers. Is it time for the move back to WA? I love Rivdog but I'm not sure what his place in the team is. Could we send Rivers, pick 6 and 43 to West Coast for 3 and 21?

Mihocek has to stay with the Tmac and Melksham retirements, even if he doesn't really play.
There will be a handful go from Casey including AJ, Hendo and probably Adams.
As much as I love and respect them... Viney has to go, as does Salem. Viney could maybe stay as backup to Sparrow, but the dynamic looked all off with them both in the side and Sparrow was non existent in possession due to it.
Rivers could use a change, straight swap for Duursma would be a win for North but also make sense for us.
Essentially if you don't have pace and a good kick, then it's time to go.

Why would we trade rivers for duursma and give north a win trade? The point of us trading is to not lose out in trades. We can get duursma for a 2nd round easily since north didn't play him alot this year and has had injuries.

I agree about pretty much everything you’ve said. I know the Viney one may be unpopular but it feels like time after his injuries etc. I hope Checkers plays on but not sure if his injury may play into his decision—I imagine seeing that terrified his wife who may not want him to play on.

I agree that Salem is a watch. If we have a fit list he ain’t getting a game, might be worth him exploring his options. We won’t get much more than a minimum serve of chips, but it would free up the slot.
I reckon Bills gonna be offered a one year deal. I know he’s not liked on here, personally I think his season has been better than what people give him credit for.
Checkers really is an interesting one but ultimately there’s no need for him to make a decision right now. It’s more down to how we want to structure our list.
For me our priorities in the trade/draft is to get a defender to slot right in and a midfielder to add to the rotations. Viney still has a year to run and I wouldn’t be putting the pen through him by any stretch.
Depending on Mihocek’s feels we may look at recruiting a forward. Maybe a Jesse Hogan, who knows!

I agree with your assessment of Laurie. He did show growth this year after getting consistent game time. I’m not sure about Hogan though. I watch most GWS games bc I love Clarry (unpopular opinion I know) and Hogan looks like his body’s shot

Yeah I think Jesse is unlikely and really probably not necessary. We have JVR showing what he’s capable of, I think Jeffo will get to the level, and Petty playing great footy. Kentfield is there as depth/potentially usurps Jeffo, and although he’s a project player Kalani White is also developing.
Down back is really where we lack tall options, and with the retirement of TMac we need to fill that void.

In my opinion.
- Try give Laurie a year atleast because if somehow he can get consistent form that will be amazing (coming from a fan that hates him most of the time).
-Adams no need to waste money on him so bye bye
-Salem I love but if he looks to go it’s whatever. Gives more chances for Lindsay or even taylor to step into that role. Even though they were both poor yesterday, one has just returned from injury and one was his third game. Salem is a melbourne legend but getting old and is a little slow aswell for this new game style.
I hope we get Dear and Duursma but I know whoever we get will be a good because I believe in kingy.

As a fellow Laurie basher, I agree with that point. He showed some great consistency back half of the year, gotta reward the work when its shown

Laurie was reported to be close to signing a two year deal a week or so ago.

Good. He would’ve gain a lot of confidence from this year and I’d love to see him take that into a pre season and a new season.

I’m not a Laurie fan, but he’s been quite consistent this year and I think he’s earned that contract.

Mihocek will stay he's been keen to get his physical rehabilitation going as fast as possible, will be good for us to have back.
Henderson, Johnson, Adams all go, Mentha probably goes too (would have to be moved from Category B Rookie List to Senior List next year and can't see us doing that) as well as AMW (unlucky).
Salem can leave if another club wants him otherwise I'd probably back him, he wasn't good when he returned but he's at a different level when he's fit. Laurie should get a 1 year deal but we will give him 2 years because the coaches love him.

Can Mentha be moved to the Indigenous player slot they were adding? Not over what it is or the rules around it

That's actually an interesting question, I'd have to look into that, it would be great if that was possible and within the spirit of what that list spot is for given we drafted him out of our rural Alice Springs academy. I'd be happy to give him another year his VFL form is probably better than everyone else in discussion for de-listing other than Henderson and he's 7 years younger with room to improve.

So do we get pick 6 from GC and 9 cos we finished 9th? Are you taking those picks to the draft or using one on an established player?
Ran into JT and Tim Lamb walking to the G last night and they told me they'll take best available talent not draft based on needs.

u/Primary-Internal-875 5d ago
Pick 6 and 10 it will be. I expect we'll take them both to the draft as it's the last draft before Tasmania start to ruin things.

Salem goes. Love him but done
Johnson, Adam's etc gone
AMW contract up? Happy to rookie him for a year but unfortunately he's running out of chances.
Laurie, showed enough second half of the heat to get another year, not angry if he gets two.
Rivers, what could have been. If there's a decent offer happy to take it.

Mihochek is contracted for next year. May has already retired and been replaced.

u/Primary-Internal-875 4d ago
Brayshaw was contracted too when he was medically retired.

u/Leading_Pass_9811 4d ago
Bradshaw didn't have a choice. Brodie ATM is wanting to try and play on.
Honestly your take on some players is pretty wrong. Lawrie is no chance of being let go after 2 games in a dead forward line. Garry Ablett would have struggled to get kicks in Melbourne's forward line the last 2 weeks.

Ever heard of a subjective opinion?
I'm basing my opinion on Laurie after SIX YEARS not two games.

Guys just a gentle reminder that these are real people you’re writing about; as if they’re shares or stocks. Just a reminder to be respectful and kind.

When I think about the senior players who didn’t step up last night. Rivers, Petty and Kozzie were at the top of the list.
Not sure what is going on with Rivers but since he’s returned from injury he hasn’t been the same and I suspect there’s more to the story than we are being told. Perhaps he needs a fresh start? Me? I would trade him.
Petty? My god he’s bloody frustrating, I don’t wanna hear Max and co crap on about how he’s been vilified over the past couple of years, when he had a chance to step up last night he did not. He was putrid.
And Kozzie? He just looked disinterested, we know he’s separated from his partner and baby, that would he difficult.
Last night was a game we should have won, and we choked. Yes, the year has been better than we expected but that doesn’t mean they get a free pass for a shit effort. They’re professional athletes.

u/Upper-Ad-3676 5d ago
I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but Kozzie has been up and down all year. He has games where he’s electric to watch and others where he doesn’t do much. Rivers hasn’t done much this year. Pettys an odd one. He has games where he’s absolutely amazing and others where he’s just not there—

Add Lindsay to this list too
8
u/Primary-Internal-875 5d ago
To which list? It's his second year.
First year he had no pre-season after recovering from a knee injury and he still looked great in his first games.
This year he has battled groin injuries which have derailed many young players.
Just look at what Kolt has done with another year and consistency. I would get concerned about Windsor before Lindsay.

u/omargosche 5d ago
Lindsay has had a disappointing end to the year but that is not surprising given his age, experience and interrupted season. His start to the year was solid and he needs time.
He was drafted v recently and cant fairly be placed anywhere near this list IMO.

Laurie can go. I don’t care what he’s shown recently. He’s six seasons in and will never progress beyond being a fringe vfl list clogger.
I’m a massive Rivers fan but I feel like he was the only player on the whole list that truly regressed under Kingy. If we can get fair value for him then trade him.
We should’ve traded Salem years ago. It’s like shooting a puppy but it’s time now.
2
u/carly598i 5d ago
While I agree and am not a massive fan, this year is the most consistent game time he’s been given and he has performed better than some. I dunno. I’m on the fence about him. And my kids tease me about how harsh I’ve always been of him 😜
Perfect example of Goodwin not giving game time and thriving is Sharp, he’s made Simon look silly.

Checkers stays, rivers goes if we get fair capital for him.
Pretty telling we didn't bring in AJ or Adams late when we were desperate.
Laurie can stay he's showed some good stuff late, he Matthews and latrelle should be good competition for each other next year.
Salem's a hard one, would feel like shooting a puppy. Same with Jack. Speed as never been eithers biggest asset and that's super important in today's game
