Announcement A Clarification to Yard Sale Sundays

Hello all. We would like to add some clarifications to what is and isn't allowed on yard sale Sundays. We want to save everyone time, so please read carefully and ask any clarifying questions below so we can clear them up for everyone.

Every week on Sunday, users may post promotional content including (but not necessarily limited to):

  • Rooms to rent or sublet
  • Parking spots
  • Textbooks
  • Selling/buying tickets to a McMaster related event*
  • Help wanted
  • Requesting tutoring services
  • Club-affiliated events, fundraisers

Posts that are not permitted:

  • Advertising for products, services of any sorts, including tutoring and paid class notes
  • Self promotion of apps or websites**
  • HSR passes***
  • Non-McMaster related events or fundraisers
  • Homework services
  • Multi level marketing recruitment
  • Buying / selling course seats
  • And as always, anything illegal, against reddit ToS, or otherwise dangerous

When buying or selling, even and especially digital items, arrange to meet on campus or another safe place. Don't get scammed.

Please note all posts are subject to removal per moderator discretion. Posts are considered advertisement even if they are not direct advertisement (discord servers which offer such services on the side, free trials, etc)

Please ensure you use the correct flair when posting (Yard Sale Sundays). Any threads of a promotional nature posted other than Sunday will be removed and you will be instructed to repost when appropriate.

*Reselling for a profit is strictly prohibited

**Applications which are directly relevant to McMaster may receive exception at moderator discretion, provided they are free to use, generally helpful, and collect no personal information.

***McMasters agreement with HSR prohibits exchange of HSR vouchers. As such, we cannot condone trading as there is nothing preventing these codes from being voided at a later date.

Thank you.

Discussion Hey McMaster! Did you know you can ride Bike Share for FREE?

Welcome (back) to campus! We hope you're settling in well for the semester ahead. If you don't know us yet, we are Hamilton Bike Share, a citywide shared mobility system that lets users ride and borrow bikes all across the lower city 🏙️🚲 If you're a full-time undergrad or graduate student, good news: you're eligible for the Mac U-Pass, a Bike Share membership already covered by your student fees!

First time U-Pass user? Here's how to register ⤵️

  1. On a phone or desktop web browser, visit hamiltonbikeshare.ca > Pricing > Mac U-Pass and select “Choose this plan”.

  2. You will be redirected to log in to Mosaic to verify your eligibility.

  3. Once verified, fill out the required information fields to complete registration on the SoBi site.

  4. Download the free Social Bicycles mobile app and log in with your new Hamilton Bike Share account credentials.

Returning riders? Follow these steps⤵️

  1. On a web browser, visit app.socialbicycles.com and login to your account.

  2. While still logged in, visit hamiltonbikeshare.ca and select the U-Pass button to validate your Mac ID.

  3. After validating, you’ll be redirected back to your profile page and your student ID will be added to your bike share account.

  4. Click on the “Memberships” tab and select “Mac U-Pass” to resubscribe.

💡If you're having any issues with renewal, try it from an Incognito browser window!💡

Need to opt out? 😢 We'd hate to see you go!

Students can opt out from receiving the U-Pass online between September 1 – 30, 2026 and receive a refund of $24.50.

Click here to access the opt-out form.

Please note that unless they are opting out for accessibility reasons, students will not be able to opt out from the pass if they have already begun using it. If you opt out of the pass, you cannot opt back in later.

Registered and ready to ride?

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

✅The U-Pass gives you 90 minutes of free ride time every day, and comes with $10 preloaded credit just in case. If you stay under 90 minutes and always lock to a designated Bike Share rack (or any bike rack on McMaster Campus), your credit won't be affected.

✅ You can ride a Bike Share anywhere in our Service Area: spanning from west (King St in downtown Dundas) to east (Kenilworth Avenue)! Please note that Bike Share services only the lower city of Hamilton, from the base of the Escarpment to the Waterfront.

✅ Use the free Social Bicycles app to unlock a bike, find the nearest hub, reserve a bike, and keep track of your ride time.

✅ When riding off-campus, locking to Bike Share hubs is always free. Locking to something other than a Bike Share hub costs $1 convenience fee.

✅Returning out-of-hub bikes to a Bike Share hub will earn you credit: if you see a bike locked up somewhere random and return it to a designated Bike Share hub, you'll add 75 cents to your account each time!

Any big no-no's?

❌ Leaving bikes unlocked: this will use up your daily ride time and start charging you 15 cents/minute after your 90 free minutes are up, in addition to a $25 fine. This could also result in bike theft, for which you may be held responsible.

❌ Freelocking - AKA leaving a bike on a kickstand, locked only to itself. This can lead to fines of $5-$15 for repeat infractions. ALWAYS lock the bike to something solid, public, and accessible!

❌ it's called Bike Share: never bring a bike into private space (dorms, garages, backyards, etc) and never put a bike on the HSR buses or GO trains. Keep the rubber side down!

❌ Busted Bike? Whether it's a flat tire, connection issue, or locking trouble, don't worry - just report it to us, using the 'Report Repair' option in-app, or by contacting our Customer Service line at 289-768-2453.

For more tips on how to get the most out of your Mac U-Pass, check out our Youtube channel!

If you're looking to go analog, we can provide RFID cards for those who don't use a smartphone 📠💳 Contact us at [everyonerides@hamiltonbikeshare.ca](mailto:everyonerides@hamiltonbikeshare.ca) for help.

🌳🚲📚 Whether you're trying to get to class on time, picking up groceries, or unwinding with a little fresh air, Bike Share is your secret weapon to unlocking Hamilton and making life on campus a breeze. We're here to support you as you make Hamilton your home for the year.

Save this post and share it with a friend you'd like to ride bikes with 🫰 and feel free to leave us a question in the comments section!

Question Student Work Program

Since I'm eligible for the mcmaster student work program and got the PDF stating I am a part of it, I applied to like 13 jobs, (all entry level, little to no experience required,) and I haven't heard back from any of them at all. Should I forget about those jobs or is it normal to not hear back until now...?

my main concern is orgo II and balancing that with everything else. I wanted a lighter semester since ive heard horror stories of orgo II from other upper years but I can't do much since everything here except sustain is mandatory and bio 2A03 (animal physio) and 2EE3 (intro to microbio) are only offered in the winter sem and bio 2b03 (cell bio) doesn't fit in my fall sem

like i know its possible but i also wanna have a life yk

Jobs Wage question & How long after references to hear back?

Post image
15 Upvotes

So yay! Tuesday, I got notified I’m a finalist for a role that’s hiring 4 positions, and had to submit at least two references. I submitted three, and all three of them submitted their reference within 6 hours after I got the finalist email.

Now that it’s Thursday - how long is an average wait to hear back?? Patience is not my strong suit and I’m so ready for a new role and to put an end to the job applying game lol.

For reference - I applied late july, had a vidrecruiter interview two weeks later, and the in person interview two weeks after that, and got my finalist email two weeks after that…

Additionally, I’m currently a unifor member and this new role would be the same - however, this new role is two grades down from my current role, which I was aware of, but the hiring range listed the maximum (step 10) would be a wage I could live with, although again, it is over $2 less than what I currently make. But, beggars can’t be choosers lol. However, per union, a new role can’t be less than 5% of what the person currently makes, although, in most cases, the grade can’t change, the step can. So to sum up, it does sound like I do have to be offered step 10. But my worry is, if I’m not initially offered step 10, and I politely ask for it while mentioning how my qualifications align with the skills needed and the wage, and union rules, is there a chance my offer can be rescinded?

Yes, clearly, I overthink everything lol but I’m just hoping for some answers and insight - Tia!!!

Question My Laptop just cooked itself

Hey yall

I’m a 2nd year CS student and my Asus tuf (had an RTX 4060) just burnt itself to death I suppose. It works for now but the GPU is cooked and I need to do some 3D rendering for my side business.

Didn’t like that laptop anyway it was a downgrade that had similar enough specs from a computer repair guy after he broke my original laptop (huge debacle almost had to involve the police)

Need solid performance for full stack deployment, CS degree needs, indie game development, and a laptop that isn’t a massive behemoth

I have money if my osap grant clears

Tired of laptop BS, do you guys think a 14” MacBook M5 will support the needs of a CS degree and last the full duration?

Discussion What Windows laptop should I go for for CS?

Hi, I will be sticking with Windows, so which pc should I go for? Both of these are $2600. I know people on here doing CS know best the workflow, priorities, longevity, etc of a cs student well.
1. Lenovo Thinkpad x9 15p, with the 12 core intel u5 338h, 12 cores (4 performance, 4 efficiency, 4 low power efficiency), and 12 threads, 32 gb ram, 1 tb ssd, 18 hour battery life, 45w sustained power to the cpu, ark b370 igpu with 10 xe cores
2. Lenovo Legion 7a gen11 strix halo, with the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 388, with 8 zen5 performance cores, 16 threads, 32 gb unified ram, 8060s igpu with 40 cores, 1 tb ssd, 7-10 hour battery life, 3 performance modes, better keyboard than this specific think pad
Both are metal but i think the x9 might have more CNC machined aluminum on it, and neither the u5 338h config of the x9 nore the strix halo config of the legion have many reviews online. I can get either for $2600. Any thoughts?

I want the laptop to last me like 5 years with minimal repair needed (like battery replacement only).
Thanks

Question Math works account question

Hello, I'm in ENG 1 making a math works account.

I signed up with my student email and I'm currently on the page where they ask for your name and department, I chose the engineering department and it's asking me to specify the Field I'm in, there's no general engineering option so should I just pick "other engineering"

Thank you!

Discussion New PhD student looking forward to meet new friends, I'd love to meet people on campus!

Hi everyone!

I am a new PhD student in computational science and engineering here and I just moved in yesterday. I'm looking forward to meet new friends in any major, undergrad or graduate.

Earlier this year when I got in I made CourseDelta for McMaster (course prerequisite graph/skill tree site) for y'all as a gift. (already posted it once on a self promo sunday, I hope this is allowed)
I will also likely be TAing for math, CS, physics, or chemistry courses, so I might meet y'all in those. If I am your TA feel free to reach out to me for help.

A bit about me/my interests: CS nerd that also lifts, digital artist, yaps a lot, I make youtube videos and coding project for community benefit/social good (I will respect the self promo rules), need to learn to cook, aspire to be a better lecturer but was still not confident due to my disability.

I really wanna meet people on campus so feel free to comment asking me or shoot me a dm.

Thanks!

Question McMaster shuttle bus

Hi! I’m planning to use the McMaster shuttle buses this semester and I’m a little confused about how they work.
What time do the shuttles start running in the morning, how often do they usually come, and if I’m coming from Lot M, which shuttle/route should I take?

Also, is there anything I should know as someone using the shuttle for the first time? Thanks!
