[Hobby] Seeking 3D Artist/Animator for classic PS1 Nightmare Creatures re-creation.

I am looking for an animator / 3d artists that would like to be part of a fan project. As part of my learning journey of the Unreal game engine I wanted to recreate the classic Nightmare Creatures from the PS1, using its original assets but implementing modern gameplay mechanics and animation techniques.

For this purpose, I need a hobbyist animator / 3d artist, preferably that can work with blender who can help me with the animations.

My current workflow involves getting the models, cleaning them up (remove duplicated geometry, fix materials, join vertices, fix UV maps, etc), rigging and animating, finally importing them to Unreal, the problem is that making good animations takes a good chunk of time from me and I can't focus as much as I would like in the game itself, so I need a pardner here :).

No professional experience is required; ideal for people who want to make a portfolio project

Royal B - 21 free low poly pieces for a winter court (FBX, GLB, Blender)

Twenty-one pieces for a winter court or high hall: a silver-scrolled door, a tall arched window, blue-grey court stone with silver trim, wrought iron balustrades and a gate, terrain tiles, a high seat, a bench, a sapphire lamp, and barrels and crates.

Everything is real-world scale and sits flat on the floor, so it imports the right way up. Every material is one flat colour, so there are no texture maps to plug in.

FBX and GLB, plus the whole kit as one Blender file. It's free, name your own price.

Think I’ve finally nailed down my low-poly creature workflow, what do we think?

I’m working on a retro inspired survival horror game with a kind of psx / ps2 inspired visual style (ps2 resolution with a psx vibe). I have no drawing skills whatsoever so for texturing I just sculpt high poly creatures, then take some renders and use projection to give that retro, fake lighting and shadowing look.

I’ve never really done low poly art before so it’s been a learning curve for sure but with this one I think I’m finally getting the hang of it. Og sculpt has about 2M polys, final high res mesh is about 180k with a full set of 4K textures.

Final in-game mesh has just over 1400 polygons (800 are just the teeth, I could have optimized them more but honestly got lazy) with a single 512x512 texture. Uv’s are awfully optimized (again, got lazy) so the actual textel density is closer to a well-optimized 512x256 texture.

There are some topology issues for sure that I’m worried are going to bite me in the ass when it’s time to animate but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it!

Given this is my fourth ever attempt at this kind of thing I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, was able to capture most of the detail in the low poly version and it’s the first time I feel like I really accomplished that but what do we think? I’m sure there’s plenty of ways I can improve for future reference, this is far from the last one I’m going to need to make so I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on it!

(Also, going for a kind of Silent Hill meets Dead Space sort of vibe, mixed a bit of Metroid Prime in this one too for good measure lol. Am I hitting that vibe or nah?)

lowpoly 3D vs hand drawn 2D, which one is easier ?

I know this question gets asked like a billion times, but i couldn't find a right answer, so i guess giving some context about my case might help me get more specific answer

i want to learn art with end goal of making my dream game, i am already naturally decent at drawing so learning it won't be much of an issue however its very limiting especially since i want my game to be a first person game, i can just compromise and make it in a 2D compatible format but yeah its not ideal,i also thought about doing it in a boomer shooter style with 2D sprits and 3D environment, but the game is not a shooter, and if i am required to make 3D world environment might as well just make everything 3D.

3D seems so easy to me, maybe i am blind to the other things that go into making a 3D asset, but for example having a chrome like object with light from above in 3D seems way too easy compared to doing that in 2D, maybe because i am used to 2D and never done 3D but not having to deal with lighting/shadows, perspective, drawing textures, animation, seems so good to me.

if 3D is easier and takes less time then 2D, does 3D programming tip the scale back to it being equally time consuming ?

Hey everyone! I made this stylized, low-poly take on Frieren, inspired by the visual style of PS2 games. It’s a personal project, i created while building my 3D portfolio. I'd really appreciate any feedback.

PSX Horror Creatures Bundle : 12+ Low Poly Aliens and Sounds, Monsters & Creatures by imaginais & ROHHSA

Post image
2 Upvotes

We’re Imaginais & ROHHSA. We create our creatures and assets from scratch, with a strong focus on PSX era horror. I handle the modeling, sculpting, texturing, and animation, while Rohhsa contributes to the creation of the assets and sound effects, allowing us to build a more complete collection rather than just individual models. Our main focus is on creatures that feel strange, alien, absurd, and surreal things that go beyond conventional human horror while still keeping that low-poly PSX identity. We’ve put a lot of this work into a limited bundle containing over a dozen 3D models and hundreds of sound effects. The contents would normally cost over $100 individually, but the entire bundle is available for less than $14. If you’re interested,

you can check it out here:  https://itch.io/b/3887/huge-psx-aliens-creatures-bundle

Thanks for checking out our work! Imaginais & ROHHSA

Does topography really matter with unshaded/primitively shaded models?

(I MISWROTE TOPOLOGY AS TOPOGRAPHY IN THE TITLE)

TL;DR I made a model with bad topology, but will it really be a problem when I render it unshaded? Please check the images.

I've been making my first 3D model in BlockBench, and after 5 hours I sent it to an artist on Discord for their feedback and they remarked that it has terrible topology (here's a guide).

I think what they meant to say is that the edges are kind of inconsistent and don't flow together as graceful lines and shapes.

I understand that sort of thing, but I never considered it much in my model because I wanted it to be used for a DS-styled cutscene. If i use barely add specific lighting and keep it relatively unshaded, do you think it won't be a problem? I don't want to redo my five hours of work.

Working on my first Stylized Low Poly Forest Pack for Unity. What missing props or details would make this a instant buy for you?

I’ve been building this Stylized Low Poly Forest Environment Pack (64 prefabs so far) and just finished setting up the main demo scene to test the atmosphere.

To keep it super optimized for mobile and indie devs, the entire pack uses a single material with a 256x256 color palette to minimize draw calls.

Before I lock everything in for the Asset Store release:

  1. What essential forest props do you think are missing here? (Adding a few more based on your ideas!)
  2. How does the lighting and overall vibe feel to you?

Would love to hear your feedback, critiques, or wishlists in the comments. Thanks for taking a look! 🌲✨

Low poly experience

I started learning Blender to make simple animations, and boy was I blind. It's much easier than I thought if you approach it smartly. I even managed to make something simple, yet quite adequate.

Russia, despite having the strongest hacking force, mysteriously lost the Virtual Wars, having all its nukes detonated inside its own borders. With their homeland completely irradiated, the survivors scattered, and without a nation, the Bratva became displaced Russians' biggest ally & employer abroad.

Done with one of my first model, trying to go for the ps2 horror vibe, any advice would really be appreciated especially for texturing as I think that really ruins the model here.

Twelve matched low poly kits that all share the same source geometry

I have been building these one at a time and the twelfth just landed, so here is the whole shelf in one picture. Each kit is the same 21 piece families rebuilt in its own palette and finish: a door, a window, walls in straight, corner and floor, fences in straight, corner and gate, four terrain tiles, a piece of furniture, a bench, a light pole, and barrels and crates in closed, open and stacked. The reason they are built that way is that every kit came off the same source geometry, so a Royal marble wall meets a Rustic log wall at the same height and the same snap points. You can mix two or three styles in one scene and nothing gaps at the joins. Real world scale, base on the floor, identity rotation, one flat colour per surface with no texture maps. FBX, GLB and the blend file.Four of them are free if you want to check the fit before anything else: https://jampot-gg.itch.io/jampot-complete-bundle

Added some new textures to my arcade cabinets. This is an easter egg in my game Uncosy, the art is actually from other games that some friends of mine are making.
