What’s going on with this? I’ve biked the river trail since I was 14, and of course I know shady things have happened - but it never seemed this bad in the past.

The WILX and State Journal stories don’t have many details.

Obviously I want to respect the two men who are now gone, but does anyone have any further details or an idea of what is going on?

I recently moved out of Lansing, but I was riding almost every night throughout July and August, though I was taking the route that leads you to Jolly and eventually to MLK (not the fish ladder route where this happened). I did see an increased homeless population as you get closer to MLK, but nothing dangerous at all.

Very sad to see this happen.

The storms from today ripped this section of siding / framing off my 2nd story window. The wood underneath looks like it needs replaced. Looking for someone who would be able to fix this for me. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

We're having a plumber come in and replace our water lines/drains in our century home, and were looking for recommendations for someone to open our plaster walls before the plumbers come, and to repair them after the replacement. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

First time going to Meat in Old Town and I feel like this place was made just for me. The worlds of classic heavy metal/hard rock and delicious smoked meats have collided and I am most glad to be there for the impact. I’ve only been here a few months but this place has skyrocketed into my top 3 local restaurants.

(Food pictured: The Chin-Gorilla, pulled pork, grilled pineapple, fried onions and bacon, comes with pimento cheese too but I 86ed that. The Stuffed Grilled Cheese, apples, American cheese, mac n cheese, carmelized onion and remoulade. And shoestring pickle fries. Half of which were eaten before the pic was taken.)

my late-70’s mother is moving to Lansing this fall to be closer to my brothers family. my brother recently moved there from another part of the Midwest (not within proximity of lake effect snow) where average snowfall a year is 25”. I read that average snowfall in Lansing is 84”. so, no one has lived in a place with this much snow.

my mother has spent her whole life in temperate west coast climates . she has no experience driving in snow or living in winters that get colder than ~50 degrees.

What should she expect moving to Lansing with regards to driving, walking, and generally living in a cold weather/snowy climate? are there any suggestions as to how she should prepare? she will be living alone and have her own car.

Calling all dirt bike riders. Are there any decent areas to ride around the Lansing area? Or will I have to go way up north to ride? Looking to ride ORV trails and some kind of singletrack.

A deer carcass rests in a technicolor oak savanna, a garter snake curls in the sun, ‘Bowser’ the resident snapping turtle idles in a pond while frogs dance below, a wood duck placed next to a tree cookie of a White Pine felled by lightning, a great blue heron in her nest and a little green heron watch over a pond, paw paw leaves brush up against the sky, dragonflies and other bugs flit through the scenery, skunk cabbage unfurls throughout the seasons, snow that melts into rich delta black dirt, large brown bats soar into the night sky, an eastern bluebird belts his morning song, a patch of goldenrod and joe pye weed spring forward, a boulder rests—deposited by glacial movements.

Hi everyone. I'm pretty new to the area, and I'm looking for boarding options for my pet bird. He goes to Cedar Creek Animal Hospital for his checkups, but they don't offer boarding. Using Google is difficult because there are a number of dog and cat boarders to sift through. Anyone know of a parrot boarding facility? TIA!

I’d like to start learning to produce music just as a fun hobby because I think it would be fun to make music I enjoy listening to and I sometimes have song ideas. Does anyone know of any place or person that teaches the basics of producing music nearby? Willing to drive a bit out of Lansing too.

The Michigan State University Amateur Radio Club is proud to host Dan KB6NU and his One-Day Tech Class!

The purpose of the event is to get MSU students and the general public excited, and most importantly, prepared for this year’s amateur radio events like contesting, contacting others through the International Space Station, building antennas, and radio fox hunts. Having a license means that you have the basic knowledge necessary to learn and participate in all the fun that ham radio has to offer, and one of the ways to do this is lovingly known as the “Ham Cram”. Getting license requirements out of the way quickly means that you have more time to enjoy and learn.

This isn't just for tech nerds (although there are quite a few members). Anybody can take the class for FREE, and take the exam the same day. Absolutely nobody is excluded, and one of our favorite things is to show new members the ropes and help them make their very first contacts.

Please join us, September 19th 2026 at 8:30am in the MSU Engineering Building, Room EB 1145. The class is absolutely free. Testing is only $15, and you can test for any of the available license levels if you're ready. The class is just for the first license level, but if you're ready, you can go all the way to Extra!

The Speech Neurophysiology Lab at the University of Michigan is looking for children who stutter ages 9 to 12 to participate in an in-person, longitudinal MRI study! (HUM00196133)

Our research team has been examining brain development in young children to better understand the cause of stuttering for over 10 years. We continue to gain information that may eventually lead to improved diagnosis and treatment efforts for children who stutter. 

Participants will be invited to complete speech and language assessments and an MRI session at the University of Michigan. Families receive a free speech and language report and a picture of their brain!

These visits require in person participation. There is no option to participate virtually.

I live in SW Lansing and have had T-Mobile fiber internet since the beginning of the year. Haven't ever had any big issues with it, but there was an 8-hour long outage today from 12-8 PM, and it just went down again at 10:30. Any other customers having similar problems?

Edit: They pulled up on my street with a big repair truck, I guess it was a hyper-local issue

I recently interviewed at Pure Options and they went with someone else, and am looking to work at a dispensary and am curious of which ones to avoid and which ones to go for? I have ten years plus mixed experience of customer service, retail and restaurant work. TIA!

New here. I read city agendas and write up what’s in them in user-readable format. Today, I started on Lansing with Monday’s 24th August, council meeting.

What passed. Council Member Ryan Kost’s resolution, 7-1, after hours of public comment. Council President Peter Spadafore voted no, saying four days wasn’t enough notice for something that could affect other parts of city government. (Item 15)

What it does. It asks. The administration and the police department would have to take further steps to actually cancel anything. By Tuesday afternoon the police chief hadn’t said how LPD would proceed, and the mayor’s office gave a statement that committed to nothing, noting he’s also hearing from residents who want more cameras, not fewer. So if you left Monday thinking the cameras come down, they don’t, not on their own. The next move belongs to the mayor’s office.

What the police said. Chief Robert Backus told council there are 26 cameras at seven locations, chosen by traffic volume and crime levels. He said LPD doesn’t share its Flock data with any outside agency, including ICE. He also said the department has used plate readers for over twenty years and is currently rewriting its policy on them.

How we got 26. Kost said the city took a grant about four years ago for roughly six cameras, intended for drive-by shooting monitoring, and the count grew from there. He also pointed out that eight other Michigan communities have cancelled or rejected Flock in the past year.

The rest of Monday’s agenda,

A developer wants air rights and public right-of-way on the 200 block of S. Grand Ave. to build the Grand Tower Building. That means permission to build over and into space the public owns, downtown. (Item 14)

Two ordinances got first readings: one dedicating city money to supportive housing services, one creating an Office of the Independent Internal Auditor that doesn’t currently exist. Both need a second reading. (Items 16, 17)

Nine separate items were property tax breaks under the Obsolete Property Rehabilitation Act, which freezes a building’s taxable value for up to twelve years so owners can rehab without the tax bill jumping. Properties on W. Willow, S. Washington, W. Mt. Hope and Baker St. Two brownfield plans also moved, on S. Cedar and N. Cedar.

The owner of 920 Long Blvd. had to show cause why the city shouldn’t order it repaired or demolished (Item 3). Four grants were accepted with no dollar amounts published, which I’m chasing.

Hey there. I mostly sit at home by myself doing nothing. I want to start going out, but I want to center it around doing something rather than making friends because I think that focus will give me less anxiety. Does anyone have any suggestions of free and paid (<$200) classes to take? I've done pottery and woodshop so far. I've signed up for sewing that starts in October, but I'd just like to figure out more options.
