TBH, when we had our first kid, I told a story about how at night I'd seal him in a big plastic bag. That, I claimed, kept him warm and cozy, and as he used up the oxygen, it made him sleep well for quite a few hours.

America is on a downward spiral with a hundred problems popping up daily and you chose this one specifically to compare with the post? It's ridiculous, sure, but that's like the prime example of a first-world problem.
I've seen grade school kids cross lagoons at low tide to get to school and back. Most of them bring a change of clothes in plastic bags to change into since even at low tide, the water reaches up to their hips. Some of them cross in rafts but each raft can only hold so many people.
Oh and these islands of ~300-700 people didn't get grid electricity until just last year.
Which is why it always irks me whenever people call the US a third-world country, and it's all over Reddit too.

I would say how important it is depends heavily on other factors and how you intend to use this method. Is there an emergency sharp object to rip a hole, is it a short walk? Are waters turbulent? Does the person carrying you have a weak grip? Idk it wouldn’t be like a hard “no” for me.
Just skip a day of school and wait for the flooding to go down instead of betting your child won't suffocate in the bag or drown in a flood when it rips.
The thing is that these villagers are absolutely desperate to give their children a chance to escape poverty. They would rather do this than let their kids kiss a day of school, because getting a city job or even a scholarship would give their child a much better life. That chance, to them, is worth more than life itself.
You can't compare your standards to those of people from generations of oppression and poverty.

I remember the one with three little girls in Nicaragua , the oldest being maybe 10 having to row to school across several miles of river with venomous snakes, spiders and the like in a busted boat.

Reminds me of the time when our district was hit by floods and all roads swept away in along the river, my ather used to take me and my brother to school daily via jungle and two violent streams, 8 km on foot. Fortunately it was only 3 months situation. I should call my dad.
