Germany has more castles than the United States has McDonald’s. This is the Eltz castle, located in Wiershem. It has been owned and occupied by the same family for 33 generations over 800 years

Munich and surroundings are more palace than castle territory. The royal Wittelsbacher dynasty built the most gorgeous Baroque and Rococo palaces like the Munich Residence, Nymphenburg Palace or Schleissheim Palace.
There's also the worldfamous Neuschwanstein Castle a couple hours away. It also is more of a palace than a real castle as it was built in the 19th century to just resemble a castle. But it has still become the epitome of a castle for many. Just type in "castle" into Google Images and it will the most depicted "castle".

Visited Munich this past May. Recommend checking out Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. Also check out the Munich Residence in the city.
